a new look at medieval history
By A Customer
In this educating and entertaining book, Madeleine Pelner Cosman takes a new look at women in medieval European history. She points out that women's accomplishments have been overlooked and their status misinterpreted by historians. By taking a new look at the evidence, she is able to demonstrate that women were very active in the society and economy of medieval Europe. This book provides new insight into women's lives. Of particular interest is her explanation of the origins of family names and the evidence that some of these names must have been passed down matrilineally. The only real objection I have to this book is that the title is somewhat misleading. It promises to be about women in medieval Europe, but is, for the most part, about England. There is material about women from other European countries, but the bulk of the material refers to English women.

Misleading Title
By J. Grambo
Lively reading but NOT for youth. If your middle school or high school student is researching Medieval Europe, avoid this book -- it is not what you would assume from the cover. Many scatological and sexual references, all documented with their historical sources. Black and white illustrations. Adults only.

Book needs an edit
By F. Aitkens
The subject is interesting, but as mentioned in other reviews, the author focusses on English history with few European examples. The book is somewhat dry and difficult to read, not because it is an academic treatment, but because it has not been edited. The many ungrammatical sentences require several readings to elicit the meaning. I think it's sad that publishers do not care enough about their books to ensure a decent edit.

From Library Journal
In association with the British Royal Geographic Society and with access to their extensive archives, Cameron has produced a fine sourcebook on the Central Asian mountains. Although emphasis is on explorers and climbers, this is not exclusively a mountaineering book. Early chapters deal with geology, history, and inhabitants of this vast region. Cameron traces British exploration, which began about the end of the 18th century triggered by the East India Company, and follows climbers from late 19th century to the present. Quotes from the writings of these hardy visitors make up a considerable part of later chapters, and one can dip into the book almost anywhere and become immersed in their vicissitudes and triumphs. Great Historic Overview
By Not Normal
This books gives a great overview of Himalayan exploration, cultural aspects, and an understanding of the tribes of the region. Reading about explorers being thrown into a pit of tigers amongst other weirdness is quite entertaining. A nice selection of historic photos also accompanies the text. Recommended if you have a library of books on this region. I bought this book over 20 years ago and would never loan it out to anybody.

From Publishers Weekly
A Holocaust survivor chronicles her family history, complete with its myths and symbols, sorrows and joys, for her granddaughter in this strongly affecting novel of hope and mourning. Narrator Rachael Silver begins her saga with the disappearance, 80 years earlier, of her grandfather, Dov Landau, from a little town in Romania. A cobbler by trade, an ornithologist by vocation, Dov literally takes refuge from imminent pogroms in the pelican nesting grounds of the Danube delta, leaving his wife, Reba, and five-year-old daughter, Sonia, in the hands of their friend, the gypsy Ovid. The three cross Eastern Europe together, settling at a spa in the Cerna valley, where they hide their origins to form a new family. Sonia grows up a gifted healer who marries an elderly musician and has a daughter of her own, narrator Rachael. WWI drives Sonia and Rachael to seek refuge in Prague, then WWII sends them underground as they hide from the Gestapo for four dark years. After the war, the two women realize Sonia's dream of moving to Buenos Aires. With her doctor husband, Rachael assimilates into Argentine life until their political activist daughter "disappears," a victim of the Dirty War of the '70s. When Rachael learns from a former prisoner that her daughter gave birth to a baby girl in prison, she writes her family's history of exile, persecution and loss, her harrowing and beautiful "testimony of survivors," for Marcella, her yet-unknown granddaughter. Kornblatt's (Nothing to Do with Love) lyrical narrative blends Singer's magic realism with Wiesel's sorrowful morality and Borges's elegant storytelling. Inventive in language and imagery, Kornblatt conveys the ways by which one family survives, continually reimagining itself, unearthing the painful past so that the newest heir may honor, and remember, her remarkable ancestors. Yiddish Poetry and the Tuberculosis Sanatorium: 1900-1970 (Judaic Traditions in Literature, Music, and Art), by Ernest B. Gilman

Part literary history and part medical sociology, Gilman's book chronicles the careers of three major immigrant Yiddish poets of the twentieth century - Solomon Bloomgarten (Yehoash), Sholem Shtern, and H. Leivick - all of whom lived through, and wrote movingly of, their experience as patients in a tuberculosis sanatorium. Gilman addresses both the formative influence of the sanatorium on the writers' work and the culture of an institution in which, before the days of antibiotics, writing was encouraged as a form of therapy. He argues that each writer produced a significant body of work during his recovery, itself an experience that profoundly influenced the course of his subsequent literary career. Seeking to recover the imaginary of the sanatorium as a scene of writing by doctors and patients, Gilman explores the historical connectionbetween tuberculosis treatment and the written word. Through a close analysis of Yiddish poems, and translations of these writers, Gilman sheds light on how essential writing and literature were to the sanatorium experience. All three poets wrote under the shadow of death.Their works are distinctive, but their most urgent concerns are shared: strangers in a strange land, suffering, displacement, acculturation, and, inevitably, what it means to be a Jew.

Review
Gilman is a skillful writer, with a very engaging and readable style. In Yiddish Poetry and the Tuberculosis Sanatorium 1900-1970, Gilman utilizes a wealth of secondary sources, incorporates robust background literature about tuberculosis along with close analysis of the poetry of three major Jewish immigrant writers, and offers new insight into the works of Yehoash, Leivick and Shtern from the unusual perspective of the influence of tuberculosis. (Jeanne Abrams, author of Revolutionary Medicine: The Founding Fathers and Mothers in Sickness and in Health)

About the Author

Special Interest: Teachers Unions and America's Public Schools, by Terry M. Moe

Why are America's public schools falling so short of the mark in educating the nation's children? Why are they organized in ineffective ways that fly in the face of common sense, to the point that it is virtually impossible to get even the worst teachers out of the classroom? And why, after more than a quarter century of costly education reform, have the schools proven so resistant to change and so difficult to improve?

In this path-breaking book, Terry M. Moe demonstrates that the answers to these questions have a great deal to do with teachers unions—which are by far the most powerful forces in American education and use their power to promote their own special interests at the expense of what is best for kids.

Despite their importance, the teachers unions have barely been studied. Special Interest fills that gap with an extraordinary analysis that is at once brilliant and kaleidoscopic—shedding new light on their historical rise to power, the organizational foundations of that power, the ways it is exercised in collective bargaining and politics, and its vast consequences for American education. The bottom line is simple but devastating: as long as the teachers unions remain powerful, the nation's schools will never be organized to provide kids with the most effective education possible.

Moe sees light at the end of the tunnel, however, due to two major transformations. One is political, the other technological, and the combination is destined to weaken the unions considerably in the coming years—loosening their special-interest grip and opening up a new era in which America's schools can finally be organized in the best interests of children.

Review

"An exquisitely researched, compellingly reasoned treatise on the role of teachers unions and their impact on America's schools. Terry Moe has read everything, collected mountains of data, and thought more deeply on this topic than anyone in America. Special Interest immediately becomes essential reading for policymakers, would-be reformers, and anyone concerned about the future of American education."―Frederick Hess, American Enterprise Institute

"America's public schools are broken, and Terry Moe sets out to explain why. In a bare-knuckled and brilliant account, he shows how the teachers unions use their unmatched political power to control virtually every aspect of educational policy and practice. The result, not surprisingly, is a system that protects the interests of employees at the expense of our kids."―Joel Klein, CEO, News Corp Education Division, and former chancellor of New York City Public Schools

"This is a superb and historic book. Terry Moe, the first scholar to brave unions' wrath by revealing how they operate, now also shows how their dominance of public education will wane, due to political change and productivity-enhancing technology. Reformers, foundation heads, elected officials who have up to now been afraid to cross the unions, and union leaders and their allies should read this book as soon as they can get their hands on it."―Paul Hill, University of Washington

"Anyone who wants to understand education reform and its challenges should read this extraordinary book. Over the past few decades, teachers unions have become some of the most powerful actors in American public education. Terry Moe fills a crucial gap by exploring how the unions work; how they veto important reforms in ways that are detrimental for children; and how their power might be waning. As with his prior work, this book will make a tremendous difference in how we run our schools."―Michelle Rhee, former Chancellor, District of Columbia Public Schools, reviewing a previous edition or volume

" Special Interest constitutes the most serious and sustained inquiry into teachers unions ever conducted. It has the signature markings of Moe's scholarship: impeccable writing, clear and persuasive argumentation, sound empirics, and an utter unwillingness to pull any punches. In the ongoing debate about teacher unions and school reform, this book is a game changer."―William Howell, University of Chicago

"Moe shines a bright light on perhaps the most under-researched topic in all of education policy. This is a theoretical and empirical tour de force, revealing what makes the teachers unions tick and why they are absolutely central to any discussions of education reform. Along the way, it makes a persuasive case that the unions are often misunderstood, even by seasoned observers―and that this is encouraged by a rational union strategy. Moe's perspective on union power is bleak, laying bare its iron grip on the schools, but he offers hope that we are entering a special time that allows for significant change."―Eric Hanushek, author of Schoolhouses, Courthouses, and Statehouses

A Nation Still at Risk
By Robin Friedman
In 1983, the President's Commission on Excellence in Education published a report titled "A Nation at Risk: The Imperative for Educational Reform". The report warned of "a rising tide of mediocrity" in public schools in the United States, and it resulted in extensive efforts at reform. Despite these well-intentioned and expensive efforts, United States public schools are still putting children and the nation "at risk" in failing to teach basic skills in reading, mathematics, and science and in failing to prepare too many young people for lives in which they will be informed citizens, happy with themselves, and useful to others.

Terry Moe's book "Special Interest: Teacher Unions and America's Public Schools" (2011) is written against the backdrop of the continued difficulties in American public education. Moe argues that the teachers unions and the power they have amassed since the late 1960's bear substantial responsibility for the continued poor state of American education. Moe is the William Bennett Munro Professor of Political Science at Stanford University and a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution. He has written extensively on the American political process and on American education.

In examining a problem as pervasive as educational failure, it is tempting to conclude that many and broad-based factors are involved. Thus, Moe observes, many people find to sources of students' failure to learn in social conditions which do not require restructuring schools as much as "ameliorat[ing] poverty, educat[ing] parents, and mak[ing] schools into community service centers that can meet an array of health, dental, nutritional, psycological, family, and other social needs." (p. 12) While Moe acknowledges the need to address social inequities, he insists that these considerations "cannot be allowed to distract from the pursuit of effective schools." (p. 12) He finds that schools themselves have a large impact separate from social conditions, and that effective learning can take place in properly structured and managed schools even when the students suffer from social and economic disadvantage. As Moe also points out, the claim that a problem results from "a number" of factors is ultimately no answer at all and works against trying to correct a situation. Moe's book thus argues that the teacher unions, the work rules they impose in the schools the power they exercise in the political process, and their ability to block reform, must shoulder a great deal of responsibility for the state of American education.

Moe is a careful student of American politics, and he is has thought well about its interaction with American education. He has a great knowledge of interest groups and the way in which such groups promote their own agendas beyond what their strength in numbers might indicate. His discussion of interest politics, separate from the way he applies it to the teachers unions, is instructive in its own right. Moe is at his best as an empirical scholar who has amassed a great deal of information about the membership in the teacher unions, their finances, their large contributions to the political process, and the state-by-state differences in their organization and function. This information is valuable and important. Moe contends that the teachers unions, for all their rhetoric about working for the child, are devoted to the pursuit of the economic well-being of their members, the teachers, and that the interests the unions promote frequently undermine effective education.

In the early chapters of the book, Moe discusses the history of the two primary teachers unions, the National Education Association (NEA) and the smaller American Federation of Teachers (AFT). Prior to the 1960s, these were largely administrative organizations rather than collective bargaining units for teachers. When public employees obtained collective bargaining rights, the unions amassed great power. Their power was assisted by the ability of the unions, to varying degrees, to control the make-up of the school boards with which they bargained and by the rather lax way in which school boards tended to bargain with the unions, granting them heavy concessions, particularly in matters not involving immediate out-of-pocket expense and in matters involving the running of the schools.

The heart of the book lies in Moe's treatment of collective bargaining in chapter 6, which makes many thoughtful points. The unions bargained successfully for salaries, overtime, restrictions on work, protections for all teachers, including the obviously incompetent, seniority rules, control of teachers over transfers, and many other matters. Moe opposes many of the concessions granted to the unions in collective bargaining. Moe still needs to show that these concessions, questionable as many of them undoubtedly are, were determinative factors in what children learn. I am not sure he fully does this. In the concluding sections of chapter 6, Moe acknowledges the difficulty of establishing a causual relationship between student performance and collective bargaining contracts. He points to two detailed academic studies, one by a scholar named Caroline Hoxby and one by Moe himself (pp. 211 --212) He admits that the question of causation is difficult and messy while insisting that the evidence is more than sufficient to fault collective bargaining contracts. As a layman reading the chapter, I thought that Moe made many strong points about collective bargaining contracts as well as some questionable points (Moe objects, for reasons unclear to me, to rewarding teachers for pursuing advanced degrees, such as an MA in their speciaties). I thought, in reading the study, the the collective bargaining contracts were probably detrimental to education in many ways, but the the depth and single-mindedness of Moe's critique outstripped his evidence.

In subsequent chapters of his book, Moe describes increasing public concern with teacher unions, including concerns in its natural political home, the liberal wing of the Democratic party. He discusses well-publicized and expensive efforts to break the power of the union contracts in New York City and in Washington, D.C. These efforts resulted in large financial rewards to the members of the teachers unions in exchange for concessions which may not survive the political process. The success of these efforts remains questionable. Moe also discusses effectively "reform unionism" which he finds unlikely to succeed given union structure and the strength in the American system of interest politics.

In the final chapters of his book, Moe returns to the political process which he knows well. Readers may be surprised about the large financial contributions the teacher unions make in both national and state politics. Moe explains the politics of "blocking" in which it is ordinarily easier for a minority group to thwart legislation than it is to enact new legislation. He uses the discussion of "blocking" to show how teacher unions have the power to stymie reform. Moe discusses efforts on the national level that have had some success, including the "No Child Left Behind" act and the innovative "Race to the Top" program of President Obama and his Secretary of Education, Arne Duncan. Overall, Moe is not optimistic about the possibility of achieving reform of teacher unions and collective bargaining contracts in the short term. In the longer term, Moe predicts, for reasons that remain unclear, that the growth of Information Technology and computer-based systems of learning will render the teachers unions largely obsolete.

Moe has written a difficult, thoughtful book about the American political process, the teacher unions, and American education. The book should encourage readers to reflect on what they understand the purpose of education to be and why education is important. It should also encourage reflection on the nature of American public education and the diverse goals it attempts to achieve. Moe has identified a problem and pinpointed a likely source of some of the difficulty. In places, I thought that the book overreached in its conclusions.

Extraordinary book!
By Larry Sand
Collecting a colossal amount of data, Terry Moe has authored an extraordinary book about our nations' teachers unions. While much has been written about these unions in the last ten years or so, nothing has been written with the rigorous attention to detail that we find in Dr. Moe's Special Interest: Teachers Unions and America's Public Schools.

The unions are examined in a myriad of ways - their relationships to teachers, effect on school boards, insistence on collective bargaining, rise as a unified powerful political entity, etc. Researched over a period of years, there are ninety pages of end notes.

This work should be required reading for education reformers, policy experts, taxpayers, parents and anyone else who is interested in how American public education works... or doesn't. At points during the book, you might experience feelings of despair about the future of public education, but toward the end of the book, Dr. Moe offers us some real reasons for hope.

This is a crime, and the perps should be behind bars.
By Passenger on the Titanic
While this book is a bit of a slog, it's only because it's so well-researched and scholarly. But you still want to just curl up in the bathtub and open up a vein. As the other reviewer said, this should be required reading for every taxpayer in this country who's footing the bill for an education system that is abysmal, despite the fact that we spend approx. half of our tax dollars on it. There is nothing more important to our country than educating the next generations -- not even the economy -- and what the unions have done to it in our urban areas, where the most vulnerable children live, is a crime. If these actions had been imposed upon us by another country, it would be considered an act of war (what genius said that?) Terry Moe has done a magnificent job educating at least his readers.

Islam: A Mosaic, Not a Monolith, by Vartan Gregorian

After World War II, leading western powers focused their attention on fighting the "Red Menace," Communism. Today, as terrorist activity is increasingly linked to militant Islamism, some politicians and scholars fear a "Green Menace," a Pan-Islamic totalitarian movement fueled by monolithic religious ideology. Such fears have no foundation in history, according to Vartan Gregorian. In this succinct, powerful survey of Islam, Gregorian focuses on Muslim diversity and division, portraying the faith and its people as a mosaic, not a monolith. The book begins with an accessible overview of Islam's tenets, institutions, evolution, and historical role. Gregorian traces its origins and fundamental principles, from Muhammad's call to faith nearly 1,400 years ago to the defeat of the Ottoman Empire in World War I, and the subsequent abolition of the Caliphate. He focuses particular attention on the intense struggle between modernists and traditionalists, interaction between religion and nationalism, and key developments that have caused bitter divisions among Muslim nations and states: the partitions of Palestine, the break up and Islamization of Pakistan, the 1978 revolution in Iran, and the 1979 Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. Today Islamist views range across the entire spectra of religious and political thought, and Islamism is anything but a unified movement. While religious extremists have attempted to form a confederacy of like-minded radicals in many countries, much of the Muslim population lives in relatively modern, secular states. Gregorian urges Westerners to distinguish between activist Islamist parties, which promote—sometimes violently—Islam as an ideology in a theocratic state, and Islamic parties, whose traditional members want their secular political systems to co-exist with the moral principles of their religion. Gregorian emphasizes the importance of religion in today's world and urges states, societies, and intellectuals to intervene in order to prevent Islam--as well as other religions--from becoming the political tool of various parties and states. He recommends continuing dialogues between modernist and traditionalist Muslims, as well as among the educated, secular elite and their clerical counterparts. He also urges U.S.-led efforts to engage and better understand the diversity of Muslim communities in the United States and the world. Lamenting widespread U.S. ignorance of the world's fastest-growing religion, Gregorian calls on "enlightened citizens" to promote international understanding, tolerance, and peace.

While many in the Western media have depicted Islam with broad strokes to the point of caricature, Gregorian, the president of the Carnegie Corporation of New York, reminds readers that it is unfair to generalize so wantonly about a religion that encompasses more than a billion people. This book is brief, but its scope is ambitious: Gregorian surveys 1,400 years of Islamic history, including such key modern events as the 1978 Iranian revolution and the 1979 Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. Naturally, some nuance is lost with this kind of dizzying breadth, but Gregorian competently presses home the point that Islam is a tremendously diverse religion that has changed considerably throughout its history. A final chapter explores the need for knowledge and understanding about Islam, which some have labeled "the green menace" that has replaced "the red menace" of the Cold War.

Review

"In this slim volume, Gregorian offers a survey of the history, theology and challenges in modern, democratic societies. Gregorian, the president the the Carnegie Corp. of New York and former president of Brown University, warns against stereotyping and inflammatory characterizations of the religion and advocates understanding as a path to tolerance." — The Houston Chronicle, 7/1/2003

"Gregorian is a national treasure, one of the most interesting intellects and personalities in the United States.... [He] writes with delightful clarity, an effective sense of irony, and a rich knowledge of the subject. He presents it as complex--unapologetically--but then delivers details with brisk simplicity." —Michael Pakenham, The Baltimore Sun, 6/15/2003

"An exceptionally readable, panoramic view of the Islamic world." —S. P. Blackburn, Hartford Seminary, Choice: Current Reviews for Academic Libraries, 4/1/2004

Readily accessible to non-specialist general readers
By Midwest Book Review
Islam: A Mosaic, Not A Monolith by Vartan Gregorian (President of the Carnegie Corporation of New York), is an informed and informative survey of the Islamic faith since its inception some 1,400 years ago. Examining Islam's tenets, institutions, changes, role in history, crucial questions that have caused strife among Muslim states, and a great deal more, Islam: A Mosaic, Not A Monolith is readily accessible to non-specialist general readers, yet thoughtful enough in its study and presentation of complicated issues of faith, politics, and culture to be of considerable value for scholars and dedicated students of Islamic Studies as well. In view of contemporary American efforts to combat the threat of international terrorism arising from fundamentalist Islamic extremists, Islam: A Mosaic, Not A Monolith should be present in the collections of every school and community library system in the country.

A Book On Islam That Engages Your Intelligence, Rather Than Insulting It
By Caesar Warrington
"Huntington [Samuel P. Huntington, author of THE CLASH Of CIVILIZATIONS And The REMAKING Of The WORLD ORDER] and others who write about a clash of civilizations do not recognize that class, tribal, family, personal, ethnic, cultural, economic, and national interests have always defied a unity of purpose that transcends all these divisions. As shown above, instances when the Muslim world was a unified monolith have been extremely rare. Throughout Islamic history, the gravitational pull of regional, dynastic, and since the nineteenth century nationalist interests has consistently outweighed the spiritual affiliations of some idealized, transcendent, organic umma. If history is a guide, it shows that in Islam, as in most major religions, there is a broad gulf between the ideal of unity and the realities on the ground." (ISLAM: A MOSAIC, NOT A MONOLITH, pp. 110-111).

The above paragraph provides the gist of Vartan Gregorian's excellent book, dispelling certain myths about both the Islamic world and Islamist extremism which are being promoted by some politicians, journalists, writers and religious leaders in the West.

Gregorian shows that the idea of a totalitarian Pan-Islamic juggernaut determined to engulf the world and submit it to "sharia" law not only is unlikely it has no historical foundation. While the fears of Islamist extremism are naturally not unwarranted and should be taken seriously, Gregorian also wants us to keep in mind the intense struggles between modernity and traditionalism, as well as religion and nationality in the Muslim world. Indeed, except for relatively brief periods in history, the Umma (the Muslim community) has mostly existed in a world fragmented by rival dynasties and states, willing to ally themselves with outsiders against each other. He reminds us that "Sharia" law, dreaded by many as some sort of universal Islamic system of punishment and coercion, is not a unified body of law, but rather exists within four specific schools of thought (Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi and Hanbali), each with their own levels of interpretation.

Islamist ideology itself is shown to be quite varied, running through a spectrum that includes the most uncompromisingly fanatical to those more moderate and willing to work within the system and participate in electoral politics. Gregorian goes further to explain Muslim extremism as historically a tool that's been used both by and against western dominance. What started as a reaction to the presence of European colonialism in North Africa and the Near East was also nourished and utilized by Great Britain and the United States against Marxist and other socialist movements in the region during the Cold War.

Despite popular conceptions, fostered by governments and media for their own advantage, Gregorian finds Islamism to be in decline. After the defeat of the Soviets in Afghanistan the Islamist movement fractured and struggles with competing constituencies and agendas. While acknowledging it as an optimistic view, Gregorian references Gilles Kepel (from his 2002 book, JIHAD: The TRAIL Of POLITICAL ISLAM) on the belief that "the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, represented not a growing threat from Islamist extremism but the reverse: they were a symbol of its `isolation, fragmentation and decline.'"

Vartan Gregorian was born in Tabriz, Iran, but is from an Armenian background. In addition to serving as president of Brown University, founding dean and provost of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at the University of Pennsylvania, and president of the New York Public Library, Gregorian is presently the president of the Carnegie Corporation of New York. ISLAM: A MOSAIC, NOT A MONOLITH grew out of a report submitted to Carnegie's trustees in the summer of 2001 on the need to promote public understanding for America's Muslims and also the need to ease their integration into American society. After September 11, 2001, the report took on a global perspective, developing into the more comprehensive survey that is this book. The next time you are in your local bookstore, wandering in either the Middle Eastern History or Religion aisles, ignore the glossed-over apologistic junk of Karen Armstrong on one end and the Islamophobic polemics of Robert Spencer on the other. Instead, choose to give this book a look over. You won't be disappointed.

Useful and reliable, but very introductory
By R. M. Peterson
I bought and read this book as part of my self-education program on Islam. It turned out to be not nearly as detailed as I had expected, especially in its discussion of the tenets of Islam and their application(s) in the modern world. The principal point of the book is to refute the popular perception of Islam as a monolith bent on clashing with and destroying Christianity and/or the West. Still, as far as it goes it is a very useful introduction, both reliable and objective, and, as others have noted, superior to Karen Armstrong and far superior to Robert Spencer.

(When I was in junior high school in the early '60s, the perceived threat to the U.S. was communism, and wanting to learm more about that pressing issue I bought a book by J. Edgar Hoover on communism. Needless to say, it wasn't very helpful, although it took me several years to come to that realization. Reading a book by Robert Spencer to learn about Islam would not be much different.)

Hydrosphere: Freshwater Systems and Pollution (Our Fragile Planet), by Dana Desonie

Earth is the water planet, but only a tiny amount of the planet s water is fresh and usable, and water pollution has become a monumental dilemma as we enter the 21st century. Though developed nations now regulate some pollutants and as a result their waterways are cleaner, new chemicals are increasingly being released into the environment, resulting in a toxic soup that may be causing cancers, development problems, and other concerns in people and wildlife. And besides pollution, overfishing and engineering projects are destroying freshwater ecosystems. Hydrosphere is a concise examination of the pressing issues affecting our water supply. This potently written and illustrated book explains how society needs to adopt a precautionary principle in water matters by better understanding the consequences of their actions before, not after, those actions occur.

Hydrosphere: Freshwater Systems and Pollution
By Lois Spangler
Our Fragile Planet Hydrosphere: The Land and Its Uses
Author: Dana Desonie, Ph.D.
Grade:6-12
Each book in the Our Fragile Planet series focuses on the causes and effects of climate change and human impact on the atmosphere, biosphere, climate, geosphere, the natural environment, hydrosphere, oceans, and polar regions. Each fact-filled book includes photographs, charts, and graphs along with a glossary, an index, and references for further reading. The information found in this series will engage childrenâ(tm)s curiosity and provide them with a sense of stewardship.

This volume defines the term hydrosphere and describes human uses and abuses of inland waterways, discussing the planet's fresh water and how people use it. Readers will find information about the water cycle, surface waters, surface water resources, and ground water and its use. Part two looks at pollutants that are introduced into fresh water, and part three traces the history of pollution in the Great Lakes. It also discusses clean-up options. Excellent background material is provided on each topic.

This thought-provoking book will make children and adults view our fragile planet in a new way. Written for students in grades 6 through 12, it could also be read by some elementary students. It would also be an excellent reference book for teachers. Teachers using differentiated instruction would find this book very useful.

Cultural Schizophrenia: Islamic Societies Confronting the West, by Daryush Shayegan

Professor Daryush Shayegan's book is a major contribution to what is perhaps the most critical debate within the Muslim world today: the relationship between its own culture and the influence of Western modernity. Based on examples ranging from Iran to Morocco, the author portrays a society he defines as peripheral - bound by a slavish adherence to its own glorified history, its "Tradition" - yet facing an external reality that derives from the West. The meeting of these two incompatible worlds leads to a profound distortion not only in how the Muslim world sees the West but, more importantly, in how it sees itself. Shayegan draws on a vast range of cultural experiences (from China and Japan to India and Latin America) in analyzing the type of mentality that is chained to its history. Sources as diverse as Jung and Octavio Paz widen the scope of this illuminating text.

Islamist schizophrenia
By William Garrison Jr.
"Cultural Schizophrenia" Islamic Societies Confronting the West" by Daryush Shayegan (translated from the French by John Howe). (1997) Former professor of comparative philosophy and Indology at Tehran Univ., former director of the Institute for Ismai'li Studies in Paris. Seyyed Hossein Nasr (Prof. Islamic Studies, George Washington Univ.): "He brilliantly sheds new light on a number of issues that have been superficially glossed over in much of the current literature." Given the title of the book, I thought that the book would discuss, well, you know, schizophrenia. I don't recall seeing the word appearing after the third page. I thought that the author would analyze the works of Psychologist A and compare thoughts with those of Psychologist B, C, & D... at least. But, NO. The author provides a couple of paragraphs of thoughts from about 50 or so philosophers, and other thinkers. You know, the usual: Jung, Kant, Nietzsche, Horkheimer, strong on Michel Foucault, a German or two, a Frenchman, some Brits, Chinese, Hindu, even someone from Peru (or was it Paraguay?). The author banters about concepts like the "Hemiplegic Outlook" and "Egocentric consciousness" in trying to bring together some joint-philosophy of modernism, which is alien to the stuck-in-the-mud Islamists. The author wrote: "Other thinkers, such as the Egyptian Abduh, the Syrian al-Kawakibi and the Indian Muhammad Iqbal (1876-1938), explored the themes of backwardness (ta'akhur) and inertia (jumud), opposing them with the ideas of evolution (tatawwur) and progress (taraqqi) acquired from the West. The idea of innovation (bid'a), condemned by Islam as `the worst of things', was re-evaluated; there was even talk of reopening the long-closed door of ijtihad (individual power of decision) [p. 52]. The author concluded: "The [Iranian] mullahs are putting their most unhinged fantasies into effect, giving free rein to their unbridled imagination, whipping the cult of martyrdom from frenzy to paroxysm, reducing timeless myths to their most flatly operational allude: and they are innovating in all directions. They have given concrete form to hallucinatory possibilities that once seethed harmlessly in the formless magma of our collective unconscious" [p. 174]. I believe the author could have condensed this 188-page book down to about 30 pages of relevancy. Not amongst the first books that I would grab to investigate the concept of Islamist schizophrenia.
