Great book

This was an interesting book. I probably would not have read this book if my great-grandfather wasn't a member of von Braun's rocket team that came over from Germany. I learned a lot about World WarII from this book. I even learned a little about rocket propulsion(how a rocket goes).

Fine Introduction to von Braun

This is a very good book that covers the life of Dr. Wernher von Braun without getting too deep in details. The book is a quick read at about 130 pages but you still get a good overall view of von Braun's life. The best part of the book is where the authors cover the years before von Braun became involved with NASA. They do not shy away from his involvement with the German SS and the problems he faced from his past after he moved to the United States, yet they do not paint him as a war criminal as some have attempted to do. This book sites sources and contains a glossary and is well indexed. There are a few technical and editing mistakes (the Apollo-Soyuz mission did not take place in 1957 as stated on page 117, nor were Saturn rockets used for any Gemini missions as stated on page 104), but these problems do not override the main thrust of the book. If you have heard of Dr. von Braun and have wanted to know more, this is a great introduction to the man and his interesting life.

The essays present readers with a voice from the past, with uncanny foretelling of issues raised by the events that occurred in Egypt more than twenty years after al-Hakim's death. Radwan's translation, along with Roger Allen's foreword, brings to light al-Hakim's lucid and erudite commentary, much of it as relevant to the problems facing Egyptian youth today as it was when first published.

About the Author

Income isn't the only way to measure a society, but in a market economy it is crucial because access to money generally determines who gets the best quality education, housing, health care, and other necessary goods and services.

As Reeves shows, the growing separation between the upper middle class and everyone else can be seen in family structure, neighborhoods, attitudes, and lifestyle. Those at the top of the income ladder are becoming more effective at passing on their status to their children, reducing overall social mobility. The result is a fracturing of American society along class lines, not just an economic divide. Upper-middle-class children become upper-middle-class adults.

These trends matter because the separation and perpetuation of the upper middle class corrode prospects for more progressive approaches to policy. Various forms of "opportunity hoarding" among the upper middle class make it harder for others to rise up to the top rung. Examples include zoning laws and schooling, occupational licensing, college application procedures, and the allocation of internships. Upper middle class opportunity hoarding, Reeves argues, results in a less competitive economy as well as a less open society.

Inequality is inevitable and can even be good, within limits. But Reeves argues that society can take effective action to reduce opportunity hoarding and thus promote broader opportunity. This fascinating book shows how American society has become the very class-defined society that earlier Americans rebelled against — and what can be done to restore a more equitable society.

Long before Stonewall, there was Franklin Kameny (1925-2011), one of the most significant figures in the gay rights movement. Beginning in 1958, he encouraged gay people to embrace homosexuality as moral and healthy, publicly denounced the federal government for excluding homosexuals from federal employment, openly fought the military's ban against gay men and women, debated psychiatrists who depicted homosexuality as a mental disorder, identified test cases to advance civil liberties through the federal courts, acted as counsel to countless homosexuals suffering state-sanctioned discrimination, and organized marches for gay rights at the White House and other public institutions. In Gay Is Good, Long collects Kameny's historically rich letters, revealing some of the early stirrings of today's politically powerful LGBT movement.
These letters are lively and colorful because they are in Kameny's inimitable voice-a voice that was consistently loud, echoing through such places as the Oval Office, the Pentagon, and the British Parliament, and often shrill, piercing to the federal agency heads, military generals, and media personalities who received his countless letters. This volume collects approximately 150 letters from 1958 to 1975, a critical period in Kameny's life during which he evolved from a victim of the law to a vocal opponent of the law, to the voice of the law itself. A lively look at the life of a civil rights hero, as revealed by his letters. By the late 1950s, Frank Kameny (b. 1925) had a promising career as an astronomer with the Army Map Service, and dreams of becoming an astronaut. When word of an earlier incident resulting in his arrest for "lewd and indecent acts" at a gay cruising spot reached his employer, Kameny was fired and barred from working for the federal government, his career aspirations quickly put to rest. This humiliating incident helped him to find his life's work: fighting discrimination against homosexuals in the federal government. He started an intense letter-writing campaign targeting various government officials, including J.F.K. He was also the founding member of the Mattachine Society of Washington, which organized marches and raised public awareness for the cause. His letters, both personal and public, provide insights into various aspects of Kameny's life: he was a careful activist who insisted that all participants in marches dress conservatively, but also a son who was upset that his mother did not understand or support his work. Kameny was often demanding to work with, but he achieved remarkable progress. This collection is a must-read for anyone interested in the history of the gay rights movement. (Dec.) About the Author
David Marc is a writer and editor who teaches at Syracuse University and Le Moyne College. He is the author of "Demographic Vist"as (1984; 1996), "Comic Visions" (1989; Blackwell, 1997) and "Bonfire of the Humanities" (1995).

Robert J. Thompson is a Professor at Syracuse University, where he heads the Center for the Study of Popular Television at the S. I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. His books include "Adventures on Prime Time" (1990) and "Television's Second Golden Age" (1996).

Susan J. Douglas is the author of "Where the Girls Are", "The Mommy Myth", and other works of cultural history and criticism. She is the Catherine Neafie Kellogg Professor of Communication Studies and chair of the department at the University of Michigan, where she has taught since 1996. Her work has appeared in "The Nation", "The Progressive", "Ms.", "The Village Voice", and "In These Times". She lives in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Disquieting. We are what we watch . . . .

To his credit, Marc, an erstwhile literary scholar, doesn't delve into the pseudo-academic question of whether television is or isn't a cornerstone of contemporary American culture. Instead, he examines what actually has transpired in the US -- the wholesale acceptance (and enjoyment) of the medium -- and describes its impact on the ever changing landscape of the Republic. With an oftentimes acerbic wit, Marc, lifts the curtain on the great Oz, allowing us to see who we are and what we've become, intellectually and culturally, whether we want to admit it or not. Ample notes let the reader discover further musings on the effects of this commonplace appliance. Overall, a brilliant -- if not disquieting -- social critique of Americans and our often reviled, often beloved boob tube.

The main point of Bonfire of the Humanities is that there isn't a difference any more between what used to be called High and Low Culture. These categories might have been hard to define, but at least academics used to know where to put Titus Andronicus and where to put Star Trek.

The Low Culture David Marc is most interested in is television, which he points out controls us by delivering pleasure, not pain, as dystopian literature sometimes predicted.

But there were artists who foresaw how we would get hooked on TV. (Even the expression "hooked on" reduces the viewer to just another plug-in.) I remember a scene in Francois Truffaut's film Fahrenheit 451, where the fireman's wife is is watching/participating in a TV soap opera. The characters stop and address her by name, asking what they should do about the latest plot complication.

What's worse is I don't remember if the scene is in Ray Bradbury's novel, which I read, or not. But I still remember the image from the movie. I've been educated out of the reading culture and into the viewing culture just like the character in Truffaut's film.

What makes Marc's essays so informative (and a lot funnier to read in places than most university press books) is that he isn't a partisan of one culture over the other. He criticizes teachers who have allowed their students to graduate without developing a love for reading and writing as well as the professional curmudgeons who want to limit "education" to some cannon they've decided on.

Did you know that reading Madame Bovary and watching Beavis and Butthead might drive you to the same kind of antisocial behavior? Huh huh huh.

The film critic David Thomson said that there have been two terrible threats to humankind in the second half of the twentieth century - - nuclear weapons and television, and that the way it turned out television was the more insidious, beamed into our brains every day.

A Very Important Book

This book is absolutely essential if you want to understand what television has done to Western Civilization. It is not a rant against shabby programming but a brilliant analysis of what the medium itself does to us, regardless of content. Marc is a compassionate and witty writer and his book deserves to be widely known and discussed.
