About the Author

Henry J. Aaron is a senior fellow in Economic Studies at the Brookings Institution, where he holds the Bruce and Virginia MacLaury Chair. Among his many books are Can We Say No? The Challenge of Rationing Health Care, with William B. Schwartz and Melissa Cox (Brookings, 2006), and Reforming Medicare: Options,Tradeoffs, and Opportunities, written with Jeanne Lambrew (Brookings, 2008). Leonard E. These documented pieces offer a range of viewpoints and often powerful testimony. Well-chosen, black-and-white reproductions and photographs are scattered throughout. Three appendixes include excerpts from 45 additional documents, short biographies of major personalities, and a glossary. A thorough index allows access to all references on a subject or person. A minor drawback to this title is that the full bibliographic citations for the primary-source material are given only at the end of the volume. Moving from 15th-century Africa to 19th-century America, this highly useful reference volume combines easy-to-read overview essays, useful chronologies, access to otherwise elusive eyewitness accounts and other historic documents, a useful glossary, and extensive biographical references. The Schneiders have organized this "eyewitness history" on slavery in the U.S. into 12 thematic and roughly chronological chapters, such as "West Coast of Africa," "Slave Life," "Runaways," "Argument over Slavery," and "End of Slavery."Each chapter begins with "The Historical Context," which includes an overview of the topic, followed by a "Chronicle of Events" and "Eyewitness Testimony" excerpted from letters, diaries, and old papers. Each excerpt notes the author and provides a reference to its source. Information blows away some stereotypes, clarifies slave life (for example, there are specific descriptions of poor food and medical care), and includes information on lesser-known topics such as Canadian refugee communities. The use of consistent subheadings in the "Historical Context" and "Eyewitness Testimony" sections of the chapters might have made it easier for students to connect the two, but this isn't too serious a flaw.Following the text are three appendixes, the first a 45-item list of documents (colonial, state, and U.S. acts, laws, speeches, court decisions), including Benjamin Franklin's 1790 Antislavery Petition to the U.S. Congress and Angelina Grimke's 1836 Appeal to the Christian Women of the South. Appendix B contains very short biographies of almost 200 "major personalities," including abolitionists, political figures, slaves, and other activists. The third appendix is a four-page glossary of some terms related to slavery. The "Notes" section provides brief citations for resources referenced in the text, with fuller information contained in the 25-page bibliography. An index and photographs add to the work's usefulness.No other single work is quite comparable, although there are many other descriptions of slavery, and first-person accounts are becoming more readily available both in print and on the Internet. Nobody should teach history that hasn't read this book. A more complete coverage of a subject would not be possible. It brings the subject into the realm of reality. It give you insight into the lives of all people in the time of slavery.

The authors, with the help of 75 scholars and writers, have culled the universe of novels produced into film and presented them in a coherent mix. The first section is alphabetically arranged by book title. For each entry, equal weight is given to an analysis of the novel and the film. Anecdotes about author's motives, writing style, plot development, and synopsis are also included. The entries highlight the novels' metamorphosis into film. Many of the entries are accompanied by a black-and-white movie still and there are pictures of some of the authors. An appendix gives selected bibliographical sketches of well-known authors. Most of the novels selected are classics, making this book especially appealing to those who want to explore how classic literature has been turned into cinematographic art.

With contributions from several dozen academics covering adaptations from Henry Fielding to Stephen King, this reference work is full of promise. The entries are organized by book titles (cross-referenced from films with changed titles) and contain short essays on the book and its various screen incarnations. But there are a number of deficiencies, starting with the mysterious selection process, which is not explained by Tibbitts (His Majesty the American: The Cinema of Douglas Fairbanks, Sr., Oak Tree, 1977) and Welsh, editor of the Literature Film Quarterly. It would have helped if all the novels had been synopsized, allowing the contributor to make a direct comparison to what is contained in the film. Short biographies of the novelists are confusing; some works mentioned are covered in the book, while others are not. Not a necessary purchase.?Thomas J. Does Decent Job in Discussion, Commits Serious Mistakes in Details

This is a review of `The Encyclopedia of Novels into Films" Second Edition (Paperback Copyright 2005), by John C. Tibbetts and James M. Welsh.

The first entry of the second edition doesn't look good; you will see these on p. 1 of the book:

What??? The source material for the Nicholas Cage film was written in the 19th century? But hadn't Susan Orlean contributed her original article to New Yorker like 10 years ago? ...

No encyclopedia is proof against the accusation of omission. I know some things must go if others should remain. But there is still something we can do to make our books better, something like proofreading. I thought it might be helpful to read this book for I am working on my homepage where I need information about films and novels. Maybe I am mistaken.

In each entry the book's contributor(s) discuss the novels and the films based on them. The methods of discussion are not always the same, but they are mainly about the differences between the book and its adaptation with summery of the plot. Brief references are attached to each of the discussion, but not much, and sometimes the discussion seems too intent on pointing out the changes done to the original boo, but that is not a big problem. Any encyclopedias, even Wikipedia, are only a starting point for further research, and basic data will do. And it is certain that the summery of the novels and films comes in handy when you read or saw them long time ago.

What I disagree with this encyclopedia is that it omits most of the made-for-TV adaptations. The decision would be understandable if the book is written strictly for academic purpose, like the hard cover study published by university press. Scholars have to narrow down the theme, and there is a difference between `film' and `TV.' But as I said, this is an encyclopedia, gateway to more information and wider perspectives.

However, the book does not list many important works. In `Pride and Prejudice' the writer mentions briefly the outstanding Colin Firth version, giving only one phrase, which is `a 1985 British Broadcasting Corporation adaptation' (p. 360) That's it. And look, 1985? The correct year is of course 1995 (or the same company's older 1980 version). Either way, this is another incredible mistake and negligence that are unforgivable. In the page `How to Use This Book' the book goes: "Not only many of them (made-for-TV adaptations) of inferior quality, but they are usually difficult to obtain (either for general viewers or researchers). Both statements are absolutely wrong. As to the quality of some of the made-for-TV adaptations, I don't have to add anything more; as to the availability of the material, perhaps some people have never seen the receently released titles of DVDs.

But what I disliked about the book is ... I cannot find the right word, but ... its lack of enthusiasm, See the column of `Oliver Twist' for instance. About the Monogram version made in 1933, the books says, `Prints are not available for viewing" (p. 329) but this is not simply true VHS is available for nearly 9 years, and I obtained a copy of several years ago. Of course this alone is not a big mistake, but if considered together with some other omissions, misprints (or misinformation) and questionable policy of the editing, it starts to look much bigger. Did they really do thorough research? Are they really thinking about the possible readers or researcher who might rely on the book?

I admit I got some information from this book, and that's the reason for giving three stars. But I was not impressed. I was and am more impressed with the numerous reviewers you can find at IMDb, whch might have already superseded this kind of book.

With a different title the right audience may have bought it

If this book had a more relevant title I think it would reach more of its target market and people not interested in its content wouldn't purchase it by mistake and be dissatisfied.
This huge book isn't an encyclopedia of every novel written which has had a film made from it or even every type or decade of literature.
95% of this book deals with either classic novels or black and white movies such as Huckleberry Finn, to Kill a Mockingbird, Wizard of Oz and that sort of thing. The modern era is severely neglected and the modern films mentioned seem there out of necessity so that the encyclopedia's facts are accurate. For example Emma is covered in depth, both the book and film with the same name but there are only a few brief paragraphs about the more modern version called Clueless. Reading these paragraphs you definitely pickup that the author wasn't too interested in informing us too much about the modern versions and doesn't consider them worthy of their time.
There are two Stephen King novels (why only two?) in here but that's about it for modern literature. These reports don't even compare the differences between the films and novels which make a lot of fans dislike the movie versions. Such as Carrie is a beautiful girl in the movie but in the novel was an ugly fat girl which made a lot more sense. With Misery the woman holding the author hostage cut off either his thumb or foot I can't remember which but in the movie only smashed it with a big hammer. This sort of controversial information is what I thought this encyclopedia would be full of.
This is a good book if you like literature or films from first half of last century but if you don't give this book a miss.

Brilliant concept poorly executed

Entirely justified in its conception, now into it's second edition, "The Encyclopedia of Novels into Film" will stand the test of time. No doubt it will improve with each edition. As yet it is an incomplete encyclopedia.

The book will improve if the authors adopt some of the simple techniques of novelists. Such as reviewing their own work by reading aloud. The style is academic, with excessively long sentences and unfamiliar words. Not suited to the material of novels and films or its readership.

The Appendix is really a conclusion. Parts of it are almost intelligible on first reading. The same is true of the the Introduction. The first object of writing novels or making films is to communicate. The authors would do well to study the Forward by Robert Wise.

The substantial number of novels/films included are alphabetically listed. Cross reference by genre would be useful. A large number are classics of their day. Cross reference by popularity, sales and critical review would be useful.

No rational is given for the selection of novels made into film nor for the length of space devoted to each. By the authors own admission, a number of pertinent novels/films are omitted. All to often the synopsis of the novel and/or film is inadequate for the uniformed reader. The occasional gross factal inaccuracy must be embarressing for those portraying themselves as academic authorities presenting an encyclopedia.

Nevertheless "...Novels into Film" should be a valuable resource for novelists who want their stories to transfer to film and film makers who want to enact use novels as a resource for stories. It is a fascianting account of the frequent disagreements between novelists and film makers on how a story should be told.

This book shows how lessons learned in Somalia will shape international responses in future cases. It details the deep- rooted social, political, and economic processes that led to the decomposition of the state in the early 1990s; analyzes the attempts by the international community to encourage political reconciliation; and offers guidelines for policymakers.

Else Lasker-Schüler (1869–1945) was born into an affluent German Jewish family. The poems collected in this bilingual volume represent the full range of Lasker-Schüler’s work, from her earliest poems until her death. Haxton’s translation embraces the poems’ lyrical imagery, remaining faithful to the poet’s vision while also capturing the cadence and rhythms of the poetry.

About the Author
Else Lasker-Schüler was a Jewish German poet and playwright. She wrote several volumes

Brooks Haxton has published six collections of poems. His poems and prose have appeared
in Atlantic Monthly, the New York Times Book Review, the New Yorker, and the Paris Review.
He is the 2013 recipient of the Fellowship of Southern Writers' Hanes Award, recognizing a
distinguished body of work by a poet in midcareer. He teaches creative writing at Syracuse
University.

The latest entry in the crowded field of film history encyclopedias consists primarily of short biographical essays on stars of the past and present. In addition, there are entries for some producers, directors, cinematographers, et al., as well as for important films and film terms, e.g., "best boy." The information is generally accurate. The opinions expressed are conventional, which is fine for neophytes but tends to make rather boring reading for the knowledgeable. The book is probably most similar to Ephraim Katz's The Film Encyclopedia (LJ 11/1/79), but differs in that Katz's is international in scope and has no entries for individuals film titles. Halliwell's Filmgoer's Companion (Scribner, 1989. 9th ed.) is also international in scope, but even for Hollywood figures it features more entries than the Siegels' book; on the other hand, Halliwell's entries are shorter. Large libraries are already likely to own most of the Encyclopedia's information in some form or other. Other libraries seeking to expand their reference holdings in this area should consider this, especially since it has the added advantage of currency in the topics covered.

Sixteen years after the publication of the first edition, this encyclopedia offers representative entries on the American film industry, from the early, pre-Hollywood days to the present. Entries cover people, including actors, directors, producers, editors, cinematographers, and more; films; studios; genres (for example, Beach party movies, Screwball comedy); jobs (Best boy, Editor); and terms (Montage, Rough cut). Some entries feature a photograph, and many include see also references. The A-Z portion of the volume is followed by a selected bibliography. The index is the preferred approach to a name or group since many people are discussed within a category or theme, such as Child stars and Sheen family dynasty.

In their introduction, the authors note that genuine stardom seldom lasts for more than five years, and in adding newer stars to this edition, they have chosen those who seem to have lasting appeal, among them Julianne Moore, Brad Pitt, and Will Smith. The standard of lasting appeal has also resulted in the addition of some early major figures who may be forgotten (the director Allen Dwan, for example).

Although libraries that have both the first edition and other film titles may not consider this a necessary purchase, this up-to-date edition is easy to use and could be a welcome addition to the circulating as well as the reference collection. With the expansion of library video and DVD collections, it could also be used as a collection development tool. Patricia Hogan

James M. Welsh (1938 2013) was professor emeritus at Salisbury University. He co-founded "Literature/Film Quarterly", which he edited for thirty-three years, and he authored over twenty books, including "The Oliver Stone Encyclopedia".

Good bedtime reading, but not necessarily for specialists

This book tried to fulfill an almost impossible task; to summarize the history of Hollywood in one volume through a series of encyclopedia entries. Much of the information is fairly familiar to historians, but there are some quirky entries - for example, on the forgotten director Allan Dwan. As a reference book, its use might be limited; but as bedtime reading, it is an ideal text. Readers can dip into it at will, and be assured of reading a series of concise, well-written entries. Perhaps the bibliography might have been a little more comprehensive, but nonetheless it's a worthwhile text.

About the Author

Grant Curtis, a development administrator and political scientist, lived in Cambodia from 1987 through 1993 and undertook several field visits to the country from 1994 to 1997. During this time he worked with NGOs, United Nations agencies, and the Rehabilitation and Economic Affairs Component of the United Nations Transitional Authority in Cambodia (UNTAC).

Naipaul or Jean-Paul Sartre. Author entries contain brief biographical information and a bibliography that includes listings of Works about... and translations. Most valuable will be the Critical Analysis portion found in some articles that provides a good summary of themes and contributions for many authors whose writings might be inaccessible to students, such as Julius Caesar and Marco Polo. The set bibliography lists additional critical sources. Topical essays cover magical realism, rationalism, epistolary novel, Maya epics, fables, bardic poetry, creation myths, and more. Some fictional characters are included, such as Tristan and Iseult. Religious texts are discussed in terms of format, theme, and content. Students often find it difficult to locate more than surface biographical data on world authors. Finding criticism--especially in English--can be equally frustrating. In addition to entries for genres, movements, and literary terms, this set offers critical biographies on an array of international authors. Coverage encompasses a spectrum of formats, including poetry, drama, fiction, memoir, essays, epics, odes, and sacred texts. The first volume begins with African proverbs dating from 1500 B.C and continues through the end of the thirteenth century. Volume 2 considers 1300 through the 1800s, and volume 3 concentrates on the past two centuries. The focus is on individuals and genres that are underrepresented in traditional resources. As a result, although there are numerous references to early Native American, Anglo-Saxon, and Celtic literature in the first volume, only a handful of English and English-speaking American writers appears in volume 2, and volume 3 does not include any writers from either the U.S. or Great Britain.

Alphabetically arranged articles range from a couple of paragraphs to a few pages. Longer biographical entries include separate sections on critical analysis. Most entries end with a list of English translations and further reading selections. Each tome features a volume--specific preface, introduction, time line, list of writers by geographic region, bibliography, and index.

The text is scholarly but should be accessible to students in grades nine and up. The set lacks some basic user-friendly features that would have enhanced its use as an educational tool. For example, there are no illustrations. There are no comprehensive set geographic listings. Time lines are listed in columns of names and dates, as opposed to layouts that would delineate contemporaries and overlapping influences. Still, academic libraries as well as public and secondary collections that support world literature curricula will want to add this as a supplement to standard references such as Cyclopedia of World Authors (Salem, 2004) and titles in H.W.
