The first nine volumes are devoted to the regional histories of Alabama, Arkansas and Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas, Tennessee and Virginia. The tenth volume covers the border states of Kentucky, Maryland and Missouri, plus Indian units serving the Confederacy and multi-state units designated as "Confederates". The final volume is comprised of tables of brigades and higher commands, including names and ranks of their commanders and dates of their commands. In all, the "Compendium" will document a total of some 2000 regimental histories. Each volume's coverage is divided into groups for artillery (including heavy artillery, horse artillery, light artillery and siege artillery); cavalry (including dragoons, lancers, mounted rifles and partisan rangers); infantry (including mounted infantry, rifles and sharp-shooters). Within each of these groupings, units are arranged by numerical designations, followed by unnumbered units which are organized alphabetically by unit name. Each individual entry includes organizational information (including, where appropriate, the date and place of the unit's organization, muster-in, reorganization and final disposition - ie. disbandment or surrender); the name of the first colonel of the regiment, first commander of a battalion or first captain of an artillery battalion, followed by an alphabetical listing of all field officers of the command, with their ranks; the higher assignments of the unit - a complete listing of the various campaigns, battles and skirmishes in which the unit was engaged, complete with dates; furthur reading suggestions, as available, of unit histories and personal memoirs.

The first two volumes to be published in an 11-volume work that will provide a state-by-state listing of military units which served in the Confederate armies. Eight more state volumes are forthcoming (Alabama and North Carolina in March 1992), and a final volume covers brigades and higher commands, including commanders. In content and format, these first two vol umes compare favorably with Frederick Dyer's A Compendium of the War of Rebellion (National Historical Soc., 1979), the standard reference for regiments of the Union armies. Entries for each unit establish its identity and present a brief history of its service. Information provided for Florida and Virginia regiments is consistent with that found in Soldiers of Florida (Perry, 1983) and Frederick Todd's American Military Equipage, 1851-72 , Vol. 2 (Chatham Square Pr., 1983), but is richer in detail. Since few libraries have the wealth of resources consulted by Sifakis, his work will be a useful addition to many Civil War refer ence collections.

About the Author

Alicia H. Munnell is the Peter F. Drucker Professor of Management Sciences, Carroll School of Management, and director of the Center for Retirement Research at Boston College. She has served as assistant secretary of the Treasury for economic policy and as a member of the President's Council of Economic Advisers. She was also cofounder and first president of the National Academy of Social Insurance. Munnell has written several books, including Brookings titles Working Longer: The Solution to the Retirement Income Challenge, with Steven Sass (2008), and Coming Up Short: The Challenge of 401(k) Plans, with Annika Sundén (2004).

A must-read book for those interested in the economics of state and local pensions

An authoritative, comprehensive, insightful book for those studying the economic of public finance aspects of state and local pensions. Munnell covers many issues. I'll comment on one, the appropriate discount rate. She states, correctly, that virtually all pension economists say that since pension obligations are secure, the discount rate to use for calculating the present value of liabilities should be a safe rate, such as treasuries or perhaps AAA corporate bonds. Accountants, and every public pension plan I know of, use the expected return on assets. The modal value is 8%. Munnell suggests a compromise: use the safe rate for reporting funding, use the expected return for the annual required contribution. All three--pension economists, accountants, and Munnell are wrong, however. The actual obligation is (chiefly) to an intermediary, the future taxpayer. If utility-maximizers, future taxpayers are willing to bear some risk (more a tax-distortion risk than a portfolio risk, Lucas & Zeldes AER--who for some reason test empirically a model they maximize over one variable instead of the appropriate two). With back-of-the-envelope calculations, I propose the correct discount rate is around 7% currently, depending on the curvature of tax distortions.
Why not the Munnell compromise? Who's going to pay attention to it if it doesn't affect the ARC--just another number to ignore. That, and the true obligation is mainly to the future taxpayer--shared slightly with current recipients and just a little more with current employees. All those who write on the discount rate, including Munnell, state in passing that the future taxpayer is at risk, and then ignore that fact. Rauh & Novy-Marx, for example.
(I'm taking advantage of the opportunity to express a view on one issue, a fraction of the book.)

That's what they always tell everyone else when it is pointed out that whatever we do here in the USA will have no impact on the climate while China and India are still using lots of fossil fuel so their people can live better lives.

So I suggest that all you Greenhouse AGW Alarmists be the first to go back to the primitive ways your anti-fossil fuel bans would result it and then, both sides should be happy. The Greenhouse alarmists could live guilt-free in their tiny carbon footprint no heat or air conditioning 5 X 5 huts and freeze during the winter and sweat during the summer. Plus give up their cars, computers, fridges, cellphones, websites, blogs, tweets & TV interviews.

About the Author

Jackson Nickerson is the Frahm Family Professor of Organization and Strategy at the Olin Business School at Washington University in St. Louis. He also is a nonresident senior fellow in Governance Studies at the Brookings Institution and director of the Brookings–Olin Executive Education partnership at Brookings.

Ronald Sanders is a vice president at Booz Allen Hamilton and the firm's first fellow. He also has served in a number of senior U.S. government posts, including Associate Director of National Intelligence, Chief HR Officer for the Internal Revenue Service, and Director of Civilian Personnel for the U.S. Department of Defense.

The Sisters' Arts is a hard-to-find but comprehensive text which discusses the writings of Virginia Woolf and the paintings of Vanessa Bell. For anyone interested in the Bloomsbury group, this text is a must-have explorations of these two women artists. Author Gillespie draws upon a number of unpublished memoirs and letters, as well as some lesser-known artworks. A limited number of Bell's paintings and dust jackets for Woolf books are reproduced within the text in black and white.

This book, though published in 1985 and therefore not dealing directly with the Taliban or Osama bin Laden, remains a valuable (especially now!) study of Islamic fundamentalism. The author, R. Hrair Dekmejian, looks at the history, social-psychological roots, ideology and practice, motives and goals, of Islamic fundamentalist movements in the Arab world. Among the more interesting parts of the book are the author's profile of fundamentalist psychology (alienation, dogmatism, inferiority-superiority, activism-aggressiveness, authoritarianism, intolerance, paranoia-projectivity, conspiratorial outlook, idealism-sense of duty, etc.) and the bases for Islamic revivalism (misrule, class conflict, military impotence, modernization and culture crisis, and identity crisis).
The author also examines specific Islamic fundamentalist groups in the Arab world, the potential consequences of Islamic fundamentalism, and "Islamic Fundamentalism and U.S. Interests." Despite being more than 15 years old, "Islam in Revolution" could not be more timely today. I strongly recommend it if you want to understand current world events!

It is a very useful primer for those who want to delve beyond the headlines. It would benefit from an update or epilogue by the author that continues to track trends since it was written.

Another book to put on the shelf

This book as a study, should have nominated facts within a certain time frame covering all actions and reactions and consequences then come up with a conclusion at the end of the book.
On the contrary, the book adopts a preset point of view; try in all ways to support it. Utilizing certain historic events regardless of the overall incident context and ignoring other related events within the same era. It uses complex jargons to convince the reader of its depth as a study. My opinion is that it's a collection of articles milted and put together in a book that goes with the overall trend and the dominating Anti-Islamic atmosphere.
