This reference book of more than 1000 entries on major radio programs is a revision and repackaging of Lackman's Same Time Same Station (LJ 11/1/95). This edition presents capsule descriptions of radio's most important dramas, comedies, game shows, news programming, and personalities from the 1920s to the present. Not much has changed from the previous edition, but Lackman's attention to details such as programming schedules and show sponsors is noteworthy. Invaluable as a guide to dramatic programming during the "Golden Age" of radio, this book is also a useful source of information about contemporary radio personalities such as Howard Stern and Don Imus. Vintage black-and-white photographs are sprinkled throughout the book. Lackman also includes several appendixes (e. g., a list of radio stations that currently broadcast old-time radio shows and an exhaustive list of radio dramas that appeared in anthology programs). Recommended for public libraries and for academic libraries serving schools with communications departments that don't already have Same Time Same Station.

A History much Needed

Much information on radio shows of the past, which you don't see much of. Brought back a lot of memories as I grew up without TV.

There needs to be a better version

As others have already mentioned, there are many errors throughout this book and most of them are due to sloppiness, carelessness, or maybe laziness. Most of the mistakes that I have come across, including titles, years, names of people involved, program lengths, would be easily fixed. OF course it becomes overwhelming when you realize that if somebody who isn't even a radio historian has spotted that many mistakes, there must be hundreds more that I'm not even aware of.

But just as bothersome as the many glaring factual errors is the emphasis in the write ups of each program. A great deal of importance is placed on the names of the announcers and the sponsors, sometimes taking up a large portion of the thumbnail sketch, while very little is said about the nature of the actual program; the writers, the storylines, the changes undergone by the show; for instance that Burns and Allen went from being a somewhat surrealistic show about two people who were in a show together but were not romantically involved to being a show about a married couple that took place in their home (and not at the studio) seems to me to be something worth mentioning.

Definitely Not An Encyclopedia

As the former editor of an Old-Time Radio club newsletter, a writer for several other Old-Time Radio clubs, and an Old-Time Radio researcher, I know that careful research is an important step in the writing of accurate factual material.
While this book is an improvement over its predecessor, "Same Time, Same Station," there are still too many factual errors in this book for it to warrant consideration as an Old-Time Radio "Encyclopedia."

A few examples of factual errors.
It was Virginia Christine and not Virginia Gregg who appeared the motion pictures "Judgement at Nuremberg" and "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner." Janet Waldo did not play Alice in the Disney classic "Alice in Wonderland;" Kathryn Beaumont played Alice. Janet Waldo played Alice in the Hanna-Barbera 1966 version of "Alice in Wonderland."
These are easily verifiable facts and yet the author got them wrong.
I verified that Virginia Gregg did not and that Virginia Christine did appear in the preceding two motion pictures by checking the cast credits of the movies in several motion picture reference books.
I verified my facts on "Alice in Wonderland" by checking the Disney and Hanna-Barbera cast lists and by talking to Janet Waldo about her role as Alice during the course of an interview.
I cannot recommend this book.
One's money would be better spent by purchasing John Dunning's "On The Air: The Encyclopedia of Old-Time Radio."

About the Author

This book changed my life.

I checked this book out of my local library when I was 12. I read it cover to cover and have never been the same since. It helped shaped my creative interest at a young age and opened a whole new world of goblins, vampires, zombies, and 50 foot women. This is a very detailed and thorough examination of a dying art form. Pick this up for your preteen kid and you won't be sorry. If there not a big fan of monsters, they will be.

Amazing book, an abosulte must read for monster fans.

I can't believe this book only has 4 reviews. The Encyclopedia of Monsters is a huge, oversized paperback containing an amazing amount of research into hundreds of films, books and comics from the silent era to the late 80s. It lists all the statistics of each monster, a summary of how the monster acts and functions, a summary of the film itself and then goes on to talk about that film's production, effects, behind-the-scenes-drama, and all sorts of trivia. It's truly a great book for anyone interested in monsters.

Great Book

I read a very positive write up of this book in Herpetological Review when I was in college and so bought the book and absolutely love it! The taxonomy is clear and concise, the pictures superb and all the information is first rate. Ideal for the up and coming herpetologist or anyone interested in a general overview of herps.

Not What You May Think

For those who are looking for a guide to the poems, I would suggest David Ross' "Critical Companion...." which is far more informative when it comes to each poem, although he does not analyze every poem. Unterecker's work attempts to present overall themes that unify the diversity of masks that Yeats often assumes but too often waddles into biographical interpretation. For instance, a poem about the poet's spiritual struggle to create amid a chaotic world that makes so many demands it could spiritually kill you, evolves into a commentary on Yeats and the idealized female and the parallels of that real person to an Irish myth. Yeats often uses this motif, but it serves as an idea to think beyond the simple relationship of a man obsessed with a woman. This approach is interesting - and sometimes helpful- but, as one reviewer said, the text reads like a high school essay of sorts. Consequently, the title should not claim to be a guide but an overview of the works by a complex writer.

Disappointing.

I was hoping for a companion to read alongside the poetry, helping me understand Yeats' sometimes complex language and obscure imagery. Unfortunately, the Reader's Guide is a set of obscure essays on what Yeats may or may not have meant, with no connection to specific poems except that most of them are touched upon somewhere in the index. Nor does it make up for its lack of practical usefulness by being brilliant in itself; it reads like an overwrought book report.

I suppose it would be too much to hope that somebody would write a line-by-line translation into accessible modern American English, but that's what would help this American enjoy Yeats.

Old Jewish Folk Music comprises the collections and writings of ethnomusicologist Moshe Beregovski as edited and translated into English by Mark Slobin, professor of music at Wesleyan University. Featured are insights into Soviet and Jewish history and musicology surveying the notes and lyrics of three hundred folk songs. Each song is carefully notated exactly as it was sung, and is accompanied by Beregovski's notes on origins and variants. Old Jewish Folk Music is a superb work of impeccable scholarship and highly recommended to students of Judaic and Yiddish traditions in music, Ukrainian musical influence, and klezmer music.

My uncle was a member of a professional Yiddish band during his youth and has continued his involvement with the music. His sheet music was lost during a recent move to a retirement community. This book has been most welcomed and has replaced much of what was lost. Thanks.

Rutgers medievalist Wilhelm's ambitious survey collects European homoerotic poetry from 7th century B.C.E. Greece through the Italian Renaissance. Though Dante, Chaucer, and others deploying gay characters are included, as are a scattering of antihomosexual polemicists, the voice of these poems is typically a mature gay man (Sappho is one of but a few women represented), the object a smooth-cheeked youth. Selections from medieval Arabic and Hebrew poetry provide some of this anthology's most disarming reading?e.g., Imn Shuhaid's "he passed me in a herd of deer, a smiling moon with lucky teeth"?as well as evidencing the improbable license apparently then possible under Islamic rule. Though generally capable, the translators sometimes resort to anachronisms (a calculator in a Juvenal satire?) and contemporary subculture argot to mixed effect. And aside from brief introductions to each section and to individual poets, the annotations are minimal?too minimal, perhaps, for many a lay reader without a literary dictionary immediately at hand. In a work of first-rate scholarship as well as popular history at its most enjoyable, Brandt, former editor of Publishers Weekly , introduces readers to a little-known event that occurred in the college town of Oberlin, Ohio, a stop on the Underground Railroad. Slave-hunters incurred the resentment of the townspeople, a wrath that came to a boil one day in August 1858 when runaway slave John Price was abducted by these bounty hunters. Outraged, Oberlin College professors and students, in company with white and free-black townspeople, rescued Price and hid him in a faculty house, an initially abortive deliverance that would later, after many machinations, prove successful--although 37 of the liberators would be indicted for violating the Fugitive Slave Act. The "Oberlin Rescue," Brant shows, thrust the issue of states' rights vs. civil rights into the forefront of national politics in the widening debate that heralded the Civil War. The place was Oberlin, an Ohio college town and Underground Railroad station. The year was 1858. Claiming a law higher than the federal Fugitive Slave Act of 1850, scores of blacks and whites foiled the return of escaped Kentucky slave John Price. Focusing on the prosecution of 36 rescuers who paid the price of fines and prison, Brandt re-creates the scene and the action. With a journalist's feel for detail and compelling human interest, he builds on Jacob Shipherd's original History of the Oberlin-Wellington Rescue (1859) and William Cochran's Western Reserve and the Fugitive Slave Law: A Prelude to the Civil War (1920; Da Capo, 1972. reprint). Brandt brings to life moral conflict, politics, personalities, stategies, and theology that divided the Union and induced the nation's bloodiest war. Recommended for antebellum, Civil War, and general American history collections. Brandt is the author of the well-received history The Man Who Tried To Burn New York (LJ 8/86). This book brings to vivid life the underground railroad and the politics of a nation poised on the brink of civil war. Slave catchers lurk around the edges of communities, hunting for escaped slaves or free blacks that they can kidnap. Radical abolitionists were militant about blocking any such kidnappers from reaching the south (regardless of the legality of the act). This book tells the true story of an escaped slave who is captured and then freed by a large group of Oberlin and Wellington abolitionists. This leads to a trial which made sensational national headlines and crystallized the growing crisis between north and south. It is absolutely gripping.

Fascinating bit of history

Anyone who is interested in antebellum history will enjoy this book. It provides a fascinating side story to events that led up to the Civil War. Additionally, I enjoyed the well-researched look at the early days of Oberlin College.
Initially, I bought the book to use as research for a novel and ended up reading it cover to cover. Well written and entertaining.

The Ohio River, pursuing a serpentine course between Ohio and Kentucky, was useful to the underground railroad. After 1849 Kentucky became a major market for the purchase and sale of slaves. The river froze over in 1855-56. John and Dina escaped from John Parks Glenn Bacon. They left on two horses with Frank from a neighboring area. Four miles into Ohio they encountered a Quaker. They stayed with him for two weeks and when fit to travel were sent on their way. Eventually John and Frank were taken to a college community, Oberlin.

The fugitive slave law was a paradox. It drove many of the Northerners into the antislavery camp. It was signed into law by Millard Fillmore in 1850. Jerry was saved by a mob in Syracuse, N.Y. and transported to Canada and freedom. States passed personal liberty laws. The real life travails of Anthony Burns, Margaret Garner, (Toni Morrison evidently used this episode in BELOVED, the killing of a child to spare her from being enslaved), and Joshua Glover did not excite as much attention as the woes of the characters in UNCLE TOM'S CABIN. Mrs. Stowe had lived in Cincinnati for eighteen years. Three hundred thousand copies of the novel were sold in the first year.

In Oberlin the college's atmosphere pervaded the town. Even the hotel was a temperance hotel. Black families resided in the town and were members of the First Church. School and town had both been founded in 1833. Oberlin became a haven for renegade teachers at Lane Theological Seminary in Cincinnati who favored immediate emancipation. Charles Grandison Finney was one of the presidents of Oberlin College. He was pastor of First Church.

In 1858 the tone of Oberlin was tense. Slave hunters had made three attempts to seize black families. The man, John Price, was taken to Wellington, Ohio by hunters. Abolitionists in Oberlin endevored to act. The campus was astir. Many young men and others rushed to Wellington. John was removed and returned to Oberlin to a hideaway at the home of Professor James Fairchild. John's captors were pleased to escape the wrath of the crowd gathered at Wellington.

Thirty-seven of the Oberlin rescuers were indicted. The Rescue Case had an impact on public opinion. Defense attorneys were aware they were playing to the press. Oberlin was called by one person the Babylon of Abolitionism. The defense tried to raise as an issue the constitutionality of the fugitive slave law. The defendants were found guilty. The rescuers were jailed. The rescue of John Price had been accomplished primarily by the black residents and white students.
