Gr 6 Up--Most of the contents of this outstanding set are drawn from another of the editor's projects, Black Women in America: An Historical Encyclopedia (Indiana Univ. Press, 1994). As a biographical resource for information on African-American women, the Facts On File Encyclopedia is unsurpassed. With more than 1000 entries profiling 950 women, it actually expands on the previous book, which contains approximately 800 articles and profiles 604 women. While the signed entries are not overtly simplified for younger audiences, the general quality of the writing is characterized by such clarity and liveliness that the work is readily accessible. This set does lack some of the scholarly apparatus that is included in the earlier work. This loss is outweighed by the far less intimidating format and larger print. The set is organized by topic, with individual volumes focusing on areas such as literature, business and professions, music, theater and the arts, social activism and politics, and education. Within each book, the individuals, groups, and organizations are arranged alphabetically. Black-and-white photos appear throughout. This set should be in all libraries that serve young people. Large high school libraries with particularly strong collections on American history and culture will want to consider purchasing Black Women in America as well.

This book may be a great place to start for someone who has very limited knowledge about how to pay for college. However, tips are very basic and wide-ranging, preventing any single reader from benefiting from all 100 tips. (For example, the book recommends attending both community college and a prestigious university as methods of saving money). As someone who was already well-acquainted with the financial aid system, and who had already made a choice regarding college, most of the tips in this book were too little, too late. Again, it's likely a good starting place for parents or high school students.

The Road to the Spring is the first book publication of Mary Austin’s
(1868–1934) poems. Best known for her prose book The Land of Little
Rain (1903), Austin was in fact a poet from the beginning of her career to
the end, even though she never published a volume dedicated to her own
original poetry. Instead, Austin’s work came to light in collections of poetry
and in prestigious journals such as Poetry, the Nation, the Forum, Harper’s,
and Saturday Review of Literature, among many others.
The Road to the Spring contains more than 200 poems, most of which
can only be found in out-of-print books, magazines, and periodicals, and
her unpublished manuscripts archived at the Huntington Library. This singular
publication includes her original work, poems she claimed to have
written with her grammar school pupils at the end of the nineteenth century,
and her translations and “re-expressions” of Native American songs,
which often diverge greatly from any other known sources. Warren includes
an introduction, laying out Austin’s place in American literature and
situating her writings in feminist, environmentalist, regionalist, and Native
American contexts. He also includes notes for those new to Austin’s work,
glossing Native terms, geographical names, and the ethnological sources
of the Native songs she re-creates.

Highly Enjoyable

A fine, interesting and accurate introduction to the Adirondack Mountain region. I read it on vacation along with two other histories,Philip Terrie's Contested Terrain which I found poorly written and lacking focus and Donaldson's A History of the Adirondacks, which is highly entertaining and based on first hand interviews (it was written in the 1920's). There are a few minor errors that the general reader will not notice but her conclusions are sound.

When Run Luck Runs Out

The book seems well laid out and has solid information. From what I have read so far, the information is very relevant, even though it was published in 1985. I expect this book will be a very good starting point for understanding this problem. Apparently the authors do not distinguish between problem gambling and pathological gambling. The entry for pathological gambling, in the book's index, says "see compulsive gambling" and there is no listing for problem gambling.

Great Rescource, But Riddled with Errors

This is my son's review.

This book is extraordinary for quick glancing, but fails as a serious animation resource. Take the "Arthur" entry, for example:

-Jenna, a minor cat character, is listed, but Buster and D.W. are nowhere to be found.
-The Brain is listed as a gourmand, when he is instead interested in science, math, and history, not food.
-Muffy is said to have a heart a of gold, which I guess is true, but she's always been rather greedy, so it's half and half.
-Fern is listed as a musician, when in actuality she is a writer and a poet.
-When this book was published, George's name was Nordgren;however, in season 12, it was changed to Ludgren.
-The "Arthur: It's Only Rock and Roll" special was not a send up of "It's a Hard Day's Night", except in a short chase sequence.
-The Arthur Thanksgiving special was just a collection of "Arthur" and "Postcards from Buster" episodes.
-Finally, Buster's last name is misspelled twice, first as "Bunny", then as "Baxty". His correct last name is "Baxter".

Other errors include:

-Saying that Popeye's name was at first named Ham Gravy, and that he had been a part of the cast of "Thimble Theater" since the very beginning.
-Stating that "Sheep in the Big City" originally aired on Adult Swim.
-Mentioning that Scrat was part of the "Ice Age" gang, when, although he was in the same movie, had separate escapades from the gang.
-Failing to list "Animal Crackers", a show based on the same-named comic strip that I happen to like.
-In "I Go Pogo", his name is just "Deacon Mushrat", not "The Deacon Mushrat". The same thing goes for "Schoolhouse Rock", which is listed here as "A Schoolhouse Rock".
-Calling Rocko the wallaby "Sparky", and saying his cow friend Heffer is his pet.
-Except for two fist season 1 episodes, there were never three segments in "Pinky and The Brain"'s half-hours.
-Stating that Pinky and The Brain, Slappy the Squirrel, Mindy and Buttons, and Rita and Runt were featured as recurring characters on "Tiny Toon Adventures", when in actuality they all debuted on "Animaniacs".

These are just some of many errors. And yet...this book is quite fascinating. Maybe it's just the breadth of the coverage that's astounding. It seem that Jeff Lenburg is interested in this subject, but doesn't know much about it, leading to much guessing. This book should belong on any animation lover's bookshelf. But, be warned. Not everything is correct. I love this book very much, but it is painfully obvious that Mr. Lenburg needs to start hitting the books, instead of pop culture trivia websites.

Lenburg has really outdone himself

"The Encyclopedia of Animated Cartoons, Third Edition" is the best cartoon reference guide hands down! I should know. I own every book Jeff Lenburg has every written on the subject. This one is by far his best and his most thorough. It's updated and expanded. Check out a copy of Lenburg's first "Encyclopedia of Animated Cartoon Series" published in 1981 and you will see what I mean! Animation and grown leaps and bounds since Lenburg wrote his first tome and he has kept in step with it. This edition includes sections on Silent Cartoon Series, Theatrical Sound Cartoon Series, Full-Length Animated Features, Television Cartoon Series, and Animated Television Specials. It is complete. To Jeff Lenburg, I say bravo. Thank you for dedicating so much of your life to this painstaking research so that we, fans of cartoons, can have this ultimate resource.

This a great book for people that love animated cartoons. While I am not an expert in the field, I felt that I got my moneys worth with all of the information about the cartoons that I enjoyed as a kid and am enjoying now it my senior years. I would highly recommend this for someone that wants to know more about the cartoon series that they grew up with.

Grade 5 Up-A splendid revision. While not exhaustive, this volume provides an examination of more than 150 groups of Native American peoples. The alphabetically arranged entries vary in length from a few paragraphs to several pages. The content has been updated to reflect both new information about the past and current issues, and the language has been significantly modified to reflect more contemporary sensibilities and to make the text more readable. The colorful drawings, almost exact duplicates of those in the 1988 edition, are mostly of artifacts, structures, or costumes and serve nicely to clarify descriptions. The brightness and color have been enhanced, adding luster to the overall look of the book. Maps provide a frame of reference for the articles on major cultural groups. All libraries, including those that own other titles on the subject, should give serious consideration to this valuable work.

The traditional lifestyles and customs of individual North American tribes and their history after contact with encroaching whites are topics discussed in alphabetical entries ranging from Abenaki to Zuni. Cross-referenced segments on cultural areas, i.e., Northeast, supplement the information given under individual tribal headings. Sections on prehistory, Mayas, Aztecs, and Olmecs are included. Entries contain a lot of information but are often chatty, rambling discussions that stray from the topic. The work does not go significantly beyond Barbara Leitch's A Concise Dictionary of Indian Tribes of North America (LJ 4/1/80). Recommended for public libraries lacking Leitch.Mary B. Although this claims to be a "fully updated" third edition of this basic work, a better description might be "expanded." This edition includes some 60 new entries, 43 of which are for tribes from California and the Northwest, among them the Bella Coola, the Puyallup, and the Washoe. The book is arranged alphabetically by tribe or group, and each entry covers the historical record--location, migrations, and wars--along with present-day tribal affairs and issues. Also included is information on tribal customs, housing, clothing, art, rituals, and food. The glossary of terms appears to be unchanged since the previous edition. The bibliography, however, has been updated with references related to the new tribal entries, among other additions. The book is well indexed, clearly presented, and easy to use, with 270 original color illustrations and maps that are both interesting and enlightening. The encyclopedia now covers 200 groups, but it still pales when compared to the four-volume Gale Encyclopedia of Native American Tribes (1999), which covers twice as many.

This volume is recommended for high-school, public library, and undergraduate collections, particularly those without the Gale work. Its added coverage will make it especially useful in libraries in California and the Pacific Northwest. Diana Shonrock

A complete and easy to use guide

Ever wondered if there were differences between the Apache and the Navajo, the Cheyenne and the Sioux? Did you know that many of the names we have for tribes were ones used by other tribes or by the white man? Learn what the different native american tribes called themselves, their sacred rites, their style of warfare- even what the tribes are doing today. This is a great tool for the novice since tribes are listed alphabetically, not by classification (such as Southwest, Plains, etc.). The only possible drawback is the generalization of the California Indians. This is a definite must have in any historian's library
