In an effort to unravel the differences between British and American English, Schur published his first guide, entitled British Self-Taught: With Comments in American, in 1973. When a revised edition appeared in 1980, the title was changed to English English, and the 1987 revision was published as British English A to Zed. This latest edition has been revised by Ehrlich, coeditor of the Oxford American Dictionary.

The approximately 5,000 Briticisms covered in this dictionary include words and phrases that Americans generally do not use at all (for example, dabs, meaning fingerprints) as well as terms used in both the U.S and Britain but that have different meanings (such as bomb, which in Britain means a smash hit, but in America indicates just the opposite). Entries indicate the American equivalent for each Briticism and usually provide additional explanation. Valuable supplemental material appears in two appendixes, the first of which outlines the basic differences between British and American English regarding syntax, pronunciation, punctuation, and spelling. The second appendix provides a means of identifying terms in specific areas, including currency, finance, weights and measures, and cricket. An index to American equivalents completes the volume. Ehrlich has put his stamp on the dictionary by condensing and rewriting significant portions of the work. He has dropped a large number of terms and has significantly shortened many of the remaining entries by deleting illustrative examples and editorial commentary. In addition, Ehrlich has added a handful of new terms, including finger (shot of booze), ruby wedding (fortieth wedding anniversary), and scrotty (crummy).

British English A to Zed continues to be a useful source for public and academic libraries. Because this revision treats relatively few new terms, it is not an essential purchase for libraries that own the 1987 revision or its 1991 paperback reprint. RBB

About the Author
Norman W. Schur was a lawyer, a graduate of Columbia Law School, and a lexicographer. His first book British Self-Taught: With Comments in American was published in 1973 and revised in 1980, 1987, and 2007. He passed away in 1992.

Eugene Ehrlich, Ph.D., (Mamaroneck, NY) is professor emeritus of English Literature at Columbia University and has been a commentator for National Public Radio.

This book has been somewhat helpful in understanding meanings and shades of meanings for British English.
I have been able to locate most of the words for which I searched.
Many words are completely different here in the "Colonies", and this book helps to set that right.

Best reference of its type

I write sophisticated Harry Potter fanfic, but I'm an American and I don't have much of a clue about British usages. I had been relying upon a number of Internet sources of greater or lesser quality before I saw Britisn English from A to Zed recommended in one of the writer's fora on Fictionalley. I bought it, and I must say it is smashing. There is no better reference work for American-British conversion available. It is comprehensive and understandable - also funny; I sometimes find myself just reading a series of entries for the humour value. I absolutely recommend this to anyone trying to write in the British style.

There are only two drawbacks. One, the indexing is rather rudimentary. It's sometimes hard to find what one wants. Second, it's rather dear - over $50 (£35) for a couple hundred pages in hardback. But, as it's a specialty work, I suppose the price is to be expected.

In this brutally candid, semiautobiographical novel, Gerber again (as in King of the World ) corrosively delineates the heinous abuses inflicted in the name of love, and a victim's ambivalence toward her abuser. Issa grows up in the WW II era in a claustrophobic household consisting of her parents, Grandma and her adored aunt Gilda, who runs a beauty shop upstairs, "where real life is." Issa's gentle father, wreathed in the caramel smoke of his pipe, struggles as an antiques dealer, carting home intriguing junk (and coveted books) to furnish the house. Her piano-playing mother, pampered and stingy, dishes out savage verbal/emotional cruelty: she ignores dying Grandma's plight, mocks the lonely, acne-scarred Gilda, humbles her husband and inflicts Issa with fears of death. Food is a main issue. Her mother harries Issa to eat to the point of nausea; she herself disobeys Jewish dietary laws. Though consuming forbidden foods may provoke thunderbolts of holy retribution, Issa and her friends--Jewish girls "without a Jewish worry"--gobble ham in a luncheonette. As the family dynamic emerges, Issa hates her baby sister, while her father and Gilda love each other with aching despair. Far from sovereign Brooklyn with its tragedies and "treasured provinces" lies the deadly limbo of Florida, to which Issa's mother wants to uproot the family. Yet her mother's verbal power invades Issa's desires, and Issa cannot deny emulating her. Gerber aptly conveys the visceral travail of the child (the grinding gut, the swinging heart). Her wry purity of style packs psychological dynamite.

Adventures in the

This was one of the first books I read about the Adirondacks. It is a classic in my mind. A number of articles written about the adventures of a Boston clergyman's hunting and fishing trips to the mountains were gathered into a book. His rhapsodic descriptions of the area and the healthful benefits of the "balsamic air" caught the imagination of thousands who longed for a change from the crowded city. As a consequence there was a veritable stampede to the North Woods. Unfortunately there were no facilities to accommodate them and they were unprepared for the attacks of mosquitoes and other biting insects. So seriously disillusioned were they that they they wanted to lynch Murray

Nonetheless his accounts of various incidents are hilarious and entertaining. Anyone who enjoys the woods and camping will find this book great fun.Adventures in the wilderness;

Great Book. Terrible Terrible Edition. DO NOT BUY THIS!!!

This is a great book. This edition is a ripoff! The publisher has simply photocopied the nearly unintelligible original and claims that this was done to preserve its authenticity. In fact, it is nearly impossible to read. What is the point of a book if you can't read it? The text is washed out, blotchy and most characters are missing several parts making it extremely difficult to decipher the words. The entire book is like a 300 page "Captcha". It is painful. I would have returned it if the deadline to do so had not passed. As it is I will probably throw it in the trash (something I've never done with a book before). It really should not be sold. There must be a version of this important work that someone has re-typeset. The cover is also stupid because it is the most un-Adirondack-like image I have ever encountered. What would posses someone to create such a terrible edition. Piece of crap. A major dis-service to the original author.

About the Author
Katherine Cullen, Ph.D., received her doctorate in molecular biology from Vanderbilt University. She has taught science for Kaplan Educational Services and has also trained teachers. In 2002 she initiated and coordinated a training program to introduce undergraduate science majors to the field of biomedical research. Cullen acted as abridgement editor for four Schaum's Easy Outlines: Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular and Cell Biology, and Beginning Chemistry. Scott McCutcheon holds a B.S. in physics from Boise State University. He is currently a physical scientist for the Division of Public Health in Juneau, Alaska. Bobbi McCutcheon is a published fiction and nonfiction writer. She is the coauthor of The Facts On File Marine Science Handbook with Scott McCutcheon.

Bill Clinton's first presidential term was a period of extraordinary change in policy toward low-income families. In 1993 Congress enacted a major expansion of the Earned Income Tax Credit for low-income working families. In 1996 Congress passed and the president signed the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act. This legislation abolished the sixty-year-old Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) program and replaced it with a block grant program, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families. It contained stiff new work requirements and limits on the length of time people could receive welfare benefits.Dramatic change in AFDC was also occurring piecemeal in the states during these years. States used waivers granted by the federal Department of Health and Human Services to experiment with a variety of welfare strategies, including denial of additional benefits for children born or conceived while a mother received AFDC, work requirements, and time limits on receipt of cash benefits. The pace of change at the state level accelerated after the 1996 federal welfare reform legislation gave states increased leeway to design their programs. Ending Welfare as We Know It analyzes how these changes in the AFDC program came about. In fourteen chapters, R. Kent Weaver addresses three sets of questions about the politics of welfare reform: the dismal history of comprehensive AFDC reform initiatives; the dramatic changes in the welfare reform agenda over the past thirty years; and the reasons why comprehensive welfare reform at the national level succeeded in 1996 after failing in 1995, in 1993–94, and on many previous occasions. Welfare reform raises issues of race, class, and sex that are as difficult and divisive as any in American politics. While broad social and political trends helped to create a historic opening for welfare reform in the late 1990s, dramatic legislation was not inevitable. The interaction of contextual factors with short-term political and policy calculations by President Clinton and congressional Republicans—along with the cascade of repositioning by other policymakers—turned "ending welfare as we know it" from political possibility into policy reality.
