O'Hanlon shows that modern Western militaries are capable of executing these types of operations with high proficiency. While conditions are unlikely to resemble those of Desert Storm, which allowed the U.S. and allies to take full advantage of modern technology, top-notch militaries have advantages in infantry combat situations—night-vision equipment, attack and transport helicopters, counterartillery radars—that would enable them to establish order and prevail in any firefights.

O'Hanlon warns that operations as casualty-free as those in Haiti and, to date, in Bosnia would be unlikely. Moreover, the political framework that outside powers would attempt to employ in establishing a new order would be critical: if intervening forces are seen as taking sides or occupying territory without legitimacy, they could meet protracted guerrilla-style resistance of the types witnessed in Vietnam, Afghanistan, and Somalia.

Michael O'Hanlon is a senior fellow in Foreign Policy Studies at the Brookings Institution, where he holds the Sydney Stein Jr. Chair. His recent books include The Future of Arms Control (Brookings, 2005; with Michael A. Levi), Neither Star Wars nor Sanctuary (Brookings, 2004), and Crisis on the Korean Peninsula (McGraw Hill, 2003; with Mike Mochizuki).

Interesting For The Initiate

The ideas put forward by Mr O'Hanlon in this slim volume roughly reflect the state of current western interventionist (or non interventionist as the case may be) policy regarding the use of force to serve humanitarian ends.
Although Mr O'Hanlon communicates an obviously extensive knowledge about international affairs, his guide to establishing military criteria for forceful intervention falls short of the goal. Although the author sets out some useful guidelines about what methodologies, barriers, and costs policymakers and the public should expect in operations of peace enforcement, he fails to make a strong case that intervention is in fact a desirable policy goal for the western nations.
On the whole, I see this slim volume as adding nothing new to the debate in world affairs, particularly in regards to peace enforcement as an extension of western economic imperalism. It's an interesting summation of the ideas that have flowed from men such from Ginggrich to Shawcross, however it lacks originality of ideas and presentation. Other people have made explained the issue much more provactively, and with a great deal more authorial flair. It's not a bad book, but I wouldn't put it first on my list.

Grade 9 Up–Approximately 750 alphabetical, signed articles cover topics from abyssal plain and Ibn Battuta to Quaternary geography and zones of convergence/divergence. Volume one opens with a complete listing of entries as well as a chronology of important geography-related facts from 200 million B.C.E. to A.D. 2050 (projection on the continuing population explosion). The articles range in length from a few paragraphs to a few pages; those on countries begin with a page notation for a map and a listing of the area, population, capital, highest point, lowest point, GDP per capita, and major natural resources. While basic definitions and facts are given, the authoritative entries also provide historical context and analyze current events and trends. The set has 80 black-and-white photographs and 115 two-color maps. Appendixes include world rankings in a number of areas (area, infant mortality, population, migration, literacy, etc.) and a complete world atlas. However, Peter Haggetts Encyclopedia of World Geography (Marshall Cavendish, 2001) offers more comprehensive coverage and features color pictures and a more appealing layout. How often do you really want to read a book about geography for pleasure? The almost chatty style of this encyclopedia may change your attitude!

Each of the approximately 750 entries is signed and includes the work location of the contributor. There is a short bibliography in paragraph form at the end of each entry; many of the bibliographies include Web sites. Most entries are several paragraphs (about a column in length) to a page or more. Cross-references within the entries are in capital letters. The relatively few black-and-white photos that accompany many entries are clear and artistic. The numerous maps are in shades of green and gray.

Each country entry begins with a locator globe and a summary of data, including map page (referring to the "World Atlas" appendix in volume 3), area, population, capital, highest and lowest points in feet (with meters in parentheses), gross domestic product per capita, and primary natural resources. Country, state, and city entries have historical information as well as current descriptions of government, social life, and world position. Most of the statistical information is current to 2004. Many of the contributors have ties to the places they write about, and their love of place is apparent. Biographical entries include the birth and death dates of the person and information about why that person is important to geography. None of the biographical subjects are women.

Terms for landforms, such as Erg (Bedouin for sand sea or dune field), Great Barrier Reef, Hemisphere, and Strait, and other concepts related to geography, such as Facilities mapping, Geopolitics, Megaliths, Nautical mile, and Xerophyte (plants that are adapted to dry climates), are also included. These entries go beyond mere definition to contain historical perspective. The after matter consists of a resource guide divided into books, journals and magazines, and Internet sites; a glossary; lists of world rankings; the aforementioned world atlas; and an index to the set. A "Chronology of Geography" can be found in volume 1.

Except for the fact that the locator globes can be difficult to decipher, overall design is pleasing, and type size is big enough to be easy on the eyes, even in the index. The text is of an average readability--not too scholarly, not too simplistic. The "World Rankings" appendix is not clearly laid out and could have used its own table of contents, but otherwise, most users will find the information they need without having too much difficulty. In spite of a few flaws, this is a marvelous set that most school, academic, and public libraries will need in their collections. Salem's World Geography (2001) has numerous color photographs and an arrangement that corresponds to the national K-12 geographic standards, "Geography for Life," but it is not as current. Pricey but worth the money

Want accurate and up-to-date info on a great variety of geography topics? This is the place to look. Hundreds of well-written articles by professional geographers. Yes, the work is loaded with facts, but it is even more valuable for the concepts and insights that you cannot find in more generalized encyclopedias. To illustrate, check out the articles on vegetation geography and vernacular housing.

Grades 9 and up - including well into college grades and of course public libraries - will appreciate this fine 3-volume reference which offers a comprehensive guide to the history and practice of geography. Over seven hundred entries describe pioneers in geography and mapmaking, regions, tools, and terminology of cartography, including hundreds of maps and photos. No singular effort, this: some 100 scholars and experts in geography contribute entries to a reference which provides definitions, data, and lengthy entries rather than short pieces. An excellent reference which promises both wide accessibility and lasting, relevant information in a highly readable set.

I recently bought the encyclopedia of world geography and I realised that there is a mistake in the article about australia. It is specifically mentioned that captain James Cook was the first european to sight Australia in 1770. However, it is historically recorded that Willem Janszoon, a dutch navigator was the first european to have sighted this island continent in 1606.In addition to that, the Dutch mapped the northern and western coasts of Australia and named it ''New Holland''. So, the fisrt sighting of the continent is attributed to this dutch explorer, not to the British named James Cook

The first nine volumes are devoted to the regional histories of Alabama, Arkansas and Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas, Tennessee and Virginia. The tenth volume covers the border states of Kentucky, Maryland and Missouri, plus Indian units serving the Confederacy and multi-state units designated as "Confederates". The final volume is comprised of tables of brigades and higher commands, including names and ranks of their commanders and dates of their commands. In all, the "Compendium" will document a total of some 2000 regimental histories. Each volume's coverage is divided into groups for artillery (including heavy artillery, horse artillery, light artillery and siege artillery); cavalry (including dragoons, lancers, mounted rifles and partisan rangers); infantry (including mounted infantry, rifles and sharp-shooters). Within each of these groupings, units are arranged by numerical designations, followed by unnumbered units which are organized alphabetically by unit name. Each individual entry includes organizational information (including, where appropriate, the date and place of the unit's organization, muster-in, reorganization and final disposition - ie. disbandment or surrender); the name of the first colonel of the regiment, first commander of a battalion or first captain of an artillery battalion, followed by an alphabetical listing of all field officers of the command, with their ranks; the higher assignments of the unit - a complete listing of the various campaigns, battles and skirmishes in which the unit was engaged, complete with dates; furthur reading suggestions, as available, of unit histories and personal memoirs.

Excellent reference book for Confederate research.

Mr. Sifakis has done an excellent job chronicling the
Arkansas and Florida Confederate Armies, citing dates
of organization, battles, commanders, mergers, and
dispositions. I would highly recommend this book to any
serious researcher.

As portrayed by Florida-based political consultant Weatherford in this comprehensive survey, immigrant European women were at once vulnerable and resilient. While most of them accompanied male relatives to America, many made the journey alone as unmarried women, or with their children to rejoin husbands after prolonged separations. Although the majority of these women were uneducated, some left eloquent letters and journals drawn upon here by the author. Fatalism, she shows, was a common attitude among the women; annual pregnancies were expected to ensure potential earners and compensate for high infant mortality. Weatherford records the toll that hardship and adjustment to American lifein cities and on farmstook on the health of these women, their marriages and the family structure; and depicts the chaotic conditions caused by wars, westward migration, industrialization and labor unrest, amid which women sought to create an independent life for themselves and their children. As one of them put it, "I learned in America not to be afraid." Photos not seen by PW.

This history relies chiefly on vignettes and anecdotes to evoke the quality of life for immigrant women in America. Weatherford surveys many different immigrant groups, including those on the frontier as well as in the cities. Her discussion takes in courting practices, sexual mores, marriage, pregnancy, birth, homes, food, clothing, childrearing, work, separation, desertion, divorce, religion, family relationships, and acculturation. Although the book lacks sufficient context for the discussion and contains little analysis, lay readers should find this treatment both entertaining and instructive. Recommended for public libraries. Amazing - Well Researched and an Amazing View of "Herstory"

I picked this up at a museum bookstore quite a while ago. This is a facinating, unvarnished study of the American immigrant women's experience. As a member of gen-x, I was shocked at the birth mortality rates and the medical, cultural and religious bias' against women back in those days. Those of us who are descendants of these immigrant women owe them a huge debt of gratitude for their hardships, loss, perseverance and faith. If you, like me, picture your Great-Great-Great Grandmother perched on the bow of a ship heading toward Ellis Island and a glorious new world - read this book for the real story. This book should be required reading in American/Women's Studies courses in college. Note: there are alot of statistics in this book but they do a great job of supporting the author's interpretation of "herstory". Also, I particularly enjoyed the many excepts from actual letters written by women of the time - truly voices from the past.

I really enjoyed this book. My ancestors were immigrant women and this book really explained the challenges they faced in coming to America during this period. It cleared up some questions I had about immigration generally. I felt it was well researched. It contained more statistical information than I was interested in, but overall a good book.

Floods are one of the most fascinating and destructive forces mother nature has at her command. Throughout history, floods have decimated dozens of countries and killed thousands of people. Weather expert Michael Allaby examines floods in this 'Facts on File' volume published in 2003.

Considering its subject, FLOODS is a rather dry book. Mainly intended for middle and high school students doing reports, Allaby's book spends a great deal of time explaining the science behind floods - evaporation, precipitation, rivers, floodplains, storms, cloudbursts, tsunamis, monsoons, the impact of floods, flood prevention, etc. rather than just recounting floods throughout history. He does touch upon such events but if you're looking for a blow-by-blow description of famous floods, this isn't your book. The text is illustrated with dozens of photos, graphs, charts and maps.

General readers may find FLOODS of interest; some of the material is quite fascinating. But students will definitely want to seek out Allaby's book when reports are assigned! Recommended.
