In 1991, 4.5 percent of all bachelor's degrees in science and engineering were earned by Hispanics. In 2003, that percentage increased to 7.2, a percentage that exceeds the growth in the Latino population itself. As this population continues to grow in the United States, the influence and contributions of Latinos in science, mathematics, and other professions increases as well, despite such barriers as prejudice while pursuing education and career goals. Latinos in Science, Math, and Professions covers 177 Hispanic-American physical and social scientists, mathematicians, and inventors. From the early disease research of Carlos Juan Finlay to the current economic theories of Barbara J. Robles, Latinos have made many significant scientific and mathematical contributions to the world. This illuminating volume includes profiles of Latino economists, chemists, pharmacologists, doctors, biologists, astronauts, sociologists, engineers, and individuals in numerous other fields, whether they were born in the United States or emigrated from such countries as Argentina, Costa Rica, or Mexico. Latino Americans in general, as well as those in the fields of science, math, and other professions. One subject index divides entries by area of expertise such as biotechnology and statistics, and additional indexes organize subjects by their year of birth and by their ethnicity or country of origin. This volume is enhanced throughout with many black-and-white photographs of the individuals profiled.

From the Back Cover
Television is the most maligned of the modern media. Critics and even viewers casually call it the "boob tube" or the "idiot box" or even "bubble gum for the eyes". But in the hands of certain individuals it can become a creative canvas, a dramatic art that opens a distinctive window on our culture. There is a growing argument--an auteur theory--that despite all the commercial constraints, the television producer is capable of using TV as a medium of personal expression. Prime Time, Prime Movers is an entertaining and informative guide to the major creators of televisual art who have emerged over the past forty-five years. From dominant performers such as Jackie Gleason and Carol Burnett to powerhouse producers such as Norman Lear and Steven Bochco, it reviews the stories and styles of the most important architects of the airwaves. Milton Berle brought a "hellzapoppin'" vaudeville aesthetic to TV. Gleason used it as an autobiographical medium. Red Skelton was the classic clown from the heartland. Paul Henning, who created, wrote, and produced The Beverly Hillbillies, was himself a kid from Missouri who grew up to become a millionaire in Los Angeles. Norman Lear modeled Archie Bunker after his own cantankerous father. Steven Bochco productions, such as Hill Street Blues and L.A. Law, made TV watching respectable for yuppies. Authors David Marc and Robert J. Thompson are the most outspoken proponents of the auteur argument. Covering a broad spectrum of TV programming formats, from old-time variety shows to sitcoms, from action/adventure shows to documentaries, from gameshows to soap operas, they challenge the tastes and interests of television viewers--a group roughly equivalent to theAmerican population at large.

About the Author
David Marc is a writer and editor who teaches at Syracuse University and Le Moyne College. He is the author of "Demographic Vist"as (1984; 1996), "Comic Visions" (1989; Blackwell, 1997) and "Bonfire of the Humanities" (1995).

Robert J. Thompson is a Professor at Syracuse University, where he heads the Center for the Study of Popular Television at the S. I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. His books include "Adventures on Prime Time" (1990) and "Television's Second Golden Age" (1996).

ROBERT J. THOMPSON is an Associate Professor at the State University of New York, at Cortland.

Very fine book
By Henry Greenspan
A fine, informing, and accessible work. In contrast with a negative review, Terrie actually goes out of his way to connect Adirondack history with "contested terrain" in other contexts. Among other points he makes--the key difference between land conflicts in the A's and elsewhere is that it did not involve genocide of indigenous people (although de Champlain was no mensch).

But that is not the focus. It is rather a nuanced drama involving a range of players--not only locals and tourists, but a range of narratives about "nature" and "conservation" that are both shared and divergent within and between these and other groups. The work on the large private preserves--which do not clearly belong in either of the usual categories--is particularly informing.

I have been spending time in the As since my parents conceived me (in Biblical sense) on Halfway Island in Lower Saranac Lake. It's good to go back informed by Phil Terrie's book.

Decent Introduction
By P.K. Ryan
This wasn't the most exciting history book I've ever read but it was an informative and concise history of the region. The region known as the Adirondacks is a huge tract of wilderness in northern New York that, as Terrie describes it, is "an unintended mix of private land, villages, and state-owned wilderness." In the opinion of this lifelong frequenter of "The Dacks," it is one of the most beautiful places on earth. Terrie thoroughly explains the conflicting intentions for the region that have plagued it since it was first explored and settled in the 18th century. The conflict was between those who recognized it's unique natural beauty and wanted to preserve it as such, and those who saw it as just another land to be exploited for it's natural resources. More recently, the struggle continues as everyday residents of the region battle the bureaucratic Adirondack Park Agency for the right to grow economically, something which has been consistently denied to them, due to the stringent restrictions on any kind of development. Originally published in 1997, it is a bit dated, but for any fellow Adirondack lovers, I would say it's definitely worth checking out.

This book is much better than Schneider's.
By A Customer
I have always loved the Adirondacks, but after reading this astonishingly well-written book I have a new appreciation for this remarkable region. If you're a fellow Adirondacks-lover I HIGHLY recommend this book. Also, if you have time to read only one history of the Adirondacks, then this is the one to read.

Confronting Suburban Poverty in America, by Elizabeth Kneebone, Alan Berube

It has been nearly a half century since President Lyndon Johnson declared war on poverty. Back in the 1960s tackling poverty "in place" meant focusing resources in the inner city and in rural areas. The suburbs were seen as home to middle- and upper-class families—affluent commuters and homeowners looking for good schools and safe communities in which to raise their kids. But today's America is a very different place. Poverty is no longer just an urban or rural problem, but increasingly a suburban one as well. In Confronting Suburban Poverty in America, Elizabeth Kneebone and Alan Berube take on the new reality of metropolitan poverty and opportunity in America.

After decades in which suburbs added poor residents at a faster pace than cities, the 2000s marked a tipping point. Suburbia is now home to the largest and fastest-growing poor population in the country and more than half of the metropolitan poor. However, the antipoverty infrastructure built over the past several decades does not fit this rapidly changing geography. As Kneebone and Berube cogently demonstrate, the solution no longer fits the problem.

The spread of suburban poverty has many causes, including shifts in affordable housing and jobs, population dynamics, immigration, and a struggling economy. The phenomenon raises several daunting challenges, such as the need for more (and better) transportation options, services, and financial resources. But necessity also produces opportunity—in this case, the opportunity to rethink and modernize services, structures, and procedures so that they work in more scaled, cross-cutting, and resource-efficient ways to address widespread need. This book embraces that opportunity.

Kneebone and Berube paint a new picture of poverty in America as well as the best ways to combat it. Confronting Suburban Poverty in America offers a series of workable recommendations for public, private, and nonprofit leaders seeking to modernize poverty alleviation and community development strategies and connect residents with economic opportunity. The authors highlight efforts in metro areas where local leaders are learning how to do more with less and adjusting their approaches to address the metropolitan scale of poverty—for example, integrating services and service delivery, collaborating across sectors and jurisdictions, and using data-driven and flexible funding strategies.

"We believe the goal of public policy must be to provide all families with access to communities, whether in cities or suburbs, that offer a high quality of life and solid platform for upward mobility over time. Understanding the new reality of poverty in metropolitan America is a critical step toward realizing that goal."—from Chapter One

" Confronting Suburban Poverty in America is one of those rare books that changes the way we think about an important domestic problem. It is replete with original findings and policy insights and will be widely cited and discussed. Kneebone and Berube's illuminating study on the dramatic growth of poverty in suburbs is a must-read not only for scholars, but also for policymakers and concerned citizens."―William Julius Wilson, Lewis P. and Linda L. Geyser University Professor, Harvard University

"Effectively helping families and communities under duress from the foreclosure crisis and Great Recession has required new types of partnerships within the nonprofit community and with private sector partners. This book explores how creative partnerships are guiding anti-poverty policy and practice into a future of tight capital and increasing need."―Sister Lillian Murphy, CEO, Mercy Housing

" Confronting Suburban Poverty provides critical insight into why the new reality of suburban poverty is difficult to address as well as the kinds of promising cross-border strategies that need more state and federal support. This important book reminds us why today's demographics require us to develop tomorrow's solutions."―Toni Preckwinkle, Cook County (Ill.) Board President

"If you thought suburban poverty was an oxymoron, this important book will set you straight. Elizabeth Kneebone and Alan Berube tell us the facts and offer thoughtful reforms to help under-resourced suburbs cope in our 21st-century world."―Peter Edelman, Professor of Law, Georgetown Law Center

Book Indirectly Addresses Income Inequality Trend
By RP
The income inequality that has emerged in America has developed in the San Francisco Bay Area's East Contra Costa County. Cities like Brentwood have an average six-figure household income, solar powered high-tech highly rated schools, and vineyard homes that sell in the high six figures. Local stores include REI and Swarovski and high school graduates attend good universities. Other East Contra Costa County cities like Antioch, Pittsburg, and Oakley have significant poverty, mediocre schools, and high levels of crime. The high school drop out rate is high in those towns with a smattering of kids attending community college. Why has part of the county prospered why other parts are mired in poverty and crime? The authors point out the drivers behind this phenomenon that are the same across the United States: education as the determining factor of whether one becomes a high income professional vs. a lower income service worker.

The authors describe the causes of the differences in suburbs accurately - Brentwood's educated professionals including IT workers often telecommute and consider the town a bedroom community for high paying jobs centers in the Tri-Valley area (Pleasanton, San Ramon, etc.) or for central county towns like Walnut Creek. Most workers in Antioch, Pittsburg, and Oakley are service workers that work at minimum wage jobs in East Contra Costa County. Twenty years ago little difference could be found between the small East Contra Costa County towns before massive development began but now residents of towns like Brentwood are affluent with BMWs in the garages of their vineyard homes but residents of towns like Antioch are dependent on government welfare programs. This books does a good job explaining why.

Cattle: A Handbook to the Breeds of the World, by Valerie Porter

This book describes in detail nearly every variety and breed of cattle in the world, both domesticated and wild. It includes most of the newest breeds (especially the zebu/taurine crosses and bison/cattle of yak/cattle hybrids) and many important extinct breeds. The early chapters trace the domestication of cattle, looking more closely at the now extinct ancestral aurochs, and how different types and breeds gradually evolved, while later chapters study wild species of the cattle family and some of their unusual interesting domesticants, especially in Asia. Yak, for example, are locally important and there is a section describing wild and domesticated varieties and the many roles they play. There is also a major section devoted to the world's water buffalo, which are of such great economic importance in many parts of Asia and are increasing rapidly in Australia and Latin America; the section gives a country-by-country guide. There is a special chapter describing how tropical cattle have adapted to the environmental challenges they face - the zebu and the sanga in particular. The breed entries are gathered in geographical sections according to the breed's country of origin. Each section has an introduction which sets the region's cattle in a cultural as well as an agricultural context. The development of each breed is traced, with ample reference to influential breeds which no longer exist or are rare today. The animals' physical characteristics are described (including typical coat colouring and markings, horns, sizes and conformation) along with their main roles historically and currently (for the production of meat or milk, as a work animal or as a form of currency or status symbol) and their special characteristics. There are detailed histories of the major or particularly interesting breeds or groups. The author also wrote "Cows for Smallholder","Keeping a Cow", "Practical Breeds" and "Enterprises for the Smallholder".

Desperados: The Roots of Country Rock, by John Einarson

As told by the musicians who made it happen, Desperados: The Roots of Country Rock revisits country rock's rise to the top of the charts. Music scholar John Einarson delves into the years from 1963, when Buck Owens and his Buckaroos brought an electric edge to their Texas honky-tonk tunes, to 1973, when The Eagles released their album "Desperado" on David Geffen's label. Einarson examines how folk, rockabilly, blues, Nashville country, Tejano, bluegrass, and other musical idioms influenced a generation of journeyman musicians. He traces the paths taken by the songsmiths, the bands in which they served their apprenticeships, and the songs they wrote together, as they steadily shaped the country rock sound. The protagonists of this story include talented but troubled Gram Parsons, a virtuoso determined to burn out before he faded away; the versatile and appealing Linda Ronstadt; Mike Nesmith, the Monkee from Texas who returned to his musical roots with a trilogy of country-rock albums; TV heartthrob turned country rocker Rick Nelson; folkie songbird Emmylou Harris before she made it in Nashville; and many others.

From Publishers Weekly
Experimental young longhairs in 1960s Southern California brought about the birth of country rock, rife with complications as it was. Musicians dug the sound of groups like Poco, the Dillards, Buffalo Springfield and the Byrds, but scaredy-cat rock execs often deemed them too countrified for the mainstream, while Nashville scoffed at the rock 'n' roll carpetbaggers. Finally, in 1971, when Linda Ronstadt's backing band reinvented itself as the Eagles, country rock became legit. Interestingly, as biographer and music historian Einarson notes in the first full genre history, The Eagles' Greatest Hits surpassed Michael Jackson's Thriller as the bestselling record of all time. Drawing from more than 60 exclusive interviews, Einarson (Neil Young: Don't Be Denied) masterfully weaves flavorful, revealing quotes from country-rock originators like Chris Hillman, Randy Meisner and Jim Messina into this engaging, up-close look at the passions, chemistry, conflicts and politics that shaped the genre from 1963 to 1973. Without airbrushing the pioneers, he profiles legends like brilliant, irresponsible Gram Parsons, who died at 26, and also praises the unsung. He documents curveballs like the British Invasion, which caused many country rockers to either resign or redesign, as well as landmark collaborations somewhere an entire album's worth of unreleased Johnny Cash/Bob Dylan tracks gathers dust. Einarson gives glimpses into what might've been: The Band considered being called The Honkies or The Crackers, and both Stephen Stills and Charles Manson reportedly auditioned for the Monkees. Music lovers and historians will widen their trivia repertoire with this book and its discography, and they'll appreciate the tribute paid to those who rocked country-style before it was cool. 16 pages b&w photos; index not seen by PW.

From Library Journal
Rock writer Einarson here provides a well-researched, readable history of country rock (country with a rock beat and rock with a country twang). Using a chronological format, the author indicates the influence certain artists such as Bob Dylan had on the genre and painstakingly recounts the formation, countless personnel changes, and breakup of other major country rock pioneers such as the Byrds, Poco, the Flying Burrito Brothers, and Buffalo Springfield. Though sometimes leading the reader on a tedious journey, Einarson redeems himself by delving into the contributions of lesser-known country rockers such as the Dillards, the Great Speckled Bird, the International Submarine Band, Shiloh, and the First National Band. Country rock came to a halt in 1973 with the death of Gram Parsons, just as the Eagles and Linda Ronstadt began to achieve pop stardom. Chock full of revealing material from more than 60 interviews, this authoritative guide covers a long-neglected era of rock history. Recommended for rock and music fans. Einarson traces country rock back to Buck Owens' Bakersfield, California, strain of country music and forward to the Eagles and today's mawkish "new" country. The latter is a lot to blame on earnest, then-young musicians like Gram Parsons, Chris Hillman, and Roger McGuinn. The latter two were original members of the Byrds, whose sixth album, Sweetheart of the Rodeo, made when Parsons was a Byrd, marked country rock's commercial birth. (Parsons' pre-Byrds group, the International Submarine Band, may have been the first country rock combo.) Parsons and Hillman soon flew off to form the Flying Burrito Brothers, of whom the Eagles became a smooth, syrupy analogue. Einarson covers all the breakups, makeups, and world-class twangin' of the genre that Parsons styled "Cosmic American Music," paying plenty of attention to such subgenre stalwarts as Mike Nesmith (once of the Monkees), Linda Ronstadt, Rick Nelson, and Neil Young, not to mention modern mogul supreme David Geffen, who got his start in country rock. This Book is Truly A Gem For Country Rock Enthusiasts
By Alan Rockman
"Desperados" is a no-holds barred, chock full of insightful informative history of California Country Rock.
Author Einarson, who gave us an equally great read in his history of the Buffalo Springfield several years back has done it again. The story of California Country Rock is an important one, as it was in California with groups and individuals as diverse as Buck Owens, Merle Haggard, The Byrds, The Flying Burrito Brothers, Chris Hillman, Gram Parsons, Clarence White, Poco and two guys named Henley and Frey where this classic pop slice of American culture began.
Yet very little has been written of the glorious and at times tragic history of California Country Rock. From the start, the "purists" (what an inaccurate term for these cretins!) like Ralph Emery pooh-poohed the genre, and even to this day dedicated Country and Country Rock artists such as Haggard, Owens, Hillman, and even Dwight Yoakum aren't totally accepted in Nashville. On the other hand, the "with-it" underground rock stations looked with askance on what the Byrds, Burritos, and Poco were trying to accomplish. It was only the Eagles, who freely borrowed from Gram Parsons, Chris Hillman and Richie Furay, who achieved real success, and only after they became an atypical stadium rock band - leaving their country roots in the dust.
Parts of the narrative do leave the reader dangling in mid-air, especially when the author skips from one band to another without a clear, concise summarization - i.e., how long did the Corvettes back Linda Ronstadt, and who actually succeeded them, Swampwater or the future Eagles, for example? Or the time future Burrito John Beland backed two guys named Glenn Frey and J.D. Souther at the Troubadour club. And where is Steve Gillette? Or the influence of one Bob Stane, whose famed Ice House once energized the careers of White, the Dillards, the Dirt Band, and Jackson Browne, among others?
But to Einarson's lasting credit, he has not only filled an important cultural gap in his storytelling of the history of California Country, but those in the know will find the true and honest voices of ex-Byrds Hillman and John York, among others. He also gives a voice to those like Hearts and Flowers Larry Murray, whose own valued contributions have regrettably stayed in the shadows to this day.
Thanks to the pioneers of Country-Rock, the Byrds taking flight with "Younger Than Yesterday" and "Sweetheart of the Rodeo", and the Burritos taking it further along with "The Gilded Palace of Sin" - Country Rock, a California original, has remained so influencial to this day - which is more than can be said of the dribble of one Ralph Emery. "Desperados" is a worthy and very important chronicle of that fabled time when as Gib Guilbeau put it, "when the steel cried and the 12-string jangled..."

Nice overview of hippie country and its legacy
By DJ Joe Sixpack
For a while there in the '70s and '80s, it was chic to sneer at country-rock -- just another reason to hate L.A. In part, this was due to the style's runaway success, what with the Eagles and Linda Ronstadt's domination of the soft pop market during the height of the disco years. Country rock has often been hard to pin down, though -- are we talking about the sleek Top 40 stuff, or the scrappy hippie bands that would just as soon pick up a sitar as a pedal steel? This book is a well-written, highly readable look at the history of this rather amorphous subgenre, spanning from Buck Owens' Fender-bending twanginess to the present-day musings of bands like the Jayhawks, Steve Earle and Lucinda Williams. The bulk of the attention is on the 'Seventies, when country-rock was a marketable niche, and Einarson does a great job fleshing out the personalities and development of the scene, including interviews with numerous artists who may seen peripheral or obscure to us now. There's also the inevitable eulogizing of the great Gram Parsons, amid a detailed portrait of SoCal's longhair hipster hordes, with a rich play-by-play of the artistic development of the Byrds, Michael Nesmith and Ricky Nelson, giving credence to a wealth of hippie-era experimentation which if often written off as indulgent or ill-formed, and helping frame its importance to the growth of the present-day "young country" Nashville crossover sound. Einarson's exploration of the deep interconnections between hard country and early rock is a little facile -- he points to Elvis and Hank Williams, where pre-rock artists such as Hank Penny and Moon Mullins might have been a little more instructive. But really, that's just nitpicking -- this is a fine book, and certainly a must for folks drawn in by the whole "No Depression" scene. Recommended!

Ehhh...
By Matt
Since I own tons of records by this work's focal artists, I figured I'd get this book. Not the best move, for a bunch of reasons. First off, as one writer referred to, it totally lacks organization. The chapters jump all over the place, making it hard to keep things in mind. Second, why should a work that deals with such lyrical and evocative music be written like a college term paper? Excuse me, Mr. Einarson, you're not proving a thesis, don't be afraid to inject some imagery! The BEST books about musical artists from this period (see Bud Scoppa's Byrds biography NOT Johnny Rogan's, and the wonderful "CSN") are better organized, more pictoral, and livelier! Man, if the times were as dry as Einarson's writing, this genre would never have come about!!!!!

And how anyone could knock the Byrds' "Untitled" album is beyond me....

From Library Journal
In a period when publishers are rushing histories of the 20th century into print, what a pleasure it is to encounter two titles on the 19th century. Though the two books differ greatly in concept and neither is complete in coverage, they help fill a surprising void in general histories of the previous century. Editors Corey and Ochoa (The New York Public Library Book of Answers, S. & S., 1993) adhere tightly to the constraints of Victoria's reign, 1837-1901. Their encyclopedia's focus is Western, but it cannot help but cover the world, as did the English presence at the time. Entries are strictly alphabetical, brief yet informative, and broad in scope, illuminating the great strides made in the arts, sciences, medicine, and philosophy in this dynamic era. The pages are somewhat stark and would have been improved if lavished with more illustrations from an age that abhorred the unadorned. See references to related entries are included throughout the text; a seven-page bibliography of books covering various aspects of Victorian life and culture completes the volume. Ultimately, this is more a mirror of an era of thought than a comprehensive history of an age, but it may prove a useful handbook if the researcher can think first of time rather than of subject. The volume from Shifflett (history, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and SUNY) is part of the "Almanacs of American Life" series, four volumes intended to flesh out periods of our history with facts, figures, and articles on cultural life. The format is a mixture of original text, brief biographies, historical tables and charts, chronologies, and illustrations, all organized under broad subject headings. Why the odd period of 1876 to 1913 was chosen is unexplained; apparently, no volume of the series is planned to cover the period from 1800 to 1875, and carrying the Victorian designation to 1913 erroneously embraces such solidly 20th-century personalities as Theodore Roosevelt and Henry Ford. Nevertheless, the concept is well done and presents a wealth of specialized information in a tool that covers the social history of the last quarter of the 19th century better than any existing title. Librarians will find more material here than in The Encyclopedia of the Victorian World but covering a shorter period. A quick check will probably show that most libraries have more on Colonial than on Victorian America, and either of these two titles will help clarify an era of impressive advancement. Review
This addition to the 'Almanacs of American Life' series covers 1876-1913, investigating changes in American culture, politics and lifestyle during the period and providing many statistical tables, references, and in-depth discussions. Use this as a stand-alone volume or package it with others in the serious for either public or high school library reference. -- Midwest Book Review

From the Back Cover
Victorian America, 1876 to 1913 investigates America during a period of immense innovation and profound change. Illustrating numerous aspects of American life, both public and private, the book is a kind of mosaic, from which we discover what Americans ate, what they wore, what they did for entertainment, what songs they sang, what games they played, what books they read, who they voted for, what they worried about, how much they earned and how they spent it, what they grew, manufactured and produced, how they did or did not provide social services, how they celebrated themselves in three World's Fairs, and much, much more. Readers will find in these pages many perspectives on the culture, the arts, the economy, the politics and the conditions of ordinary life in the United States during the period between the Civil War and World War I. They will find evidence of diversity, growth and prosperity, as well as of bigotry, economic blight and miserable existences wasted in ill-compensated toil. They will find the mansions of Newport and the slums of the Lower East Side, the open door to immigrants and the confinement of the Indians of the western frontier, the capital accumulation of the robber barons and the struggles of workers - including child labor - for dignity and decent wages. They will find the overwhelming development of technology - for example, the invention and spread of the light bulb, the telephone, the automobile, the airplane and the movies - as it fueled the country's growth and changed America forever. In short, Victorian America, 1876 to 1913 reflects all the variety and contradiction of American life in this extraordinary historical era. Carefully chosen andrepresentative information, in a concise, easy-to-use mix of documents, text, tables and illustrations, allows the reader to sample the texture and flavor of Victorian America.

More Charts And Statistics Than Words
By Chris Luallen
I bought this title thinking it was a university level textbook on the Victorian period in the United States. But it turned out to be something much different. There are about 100 pages, of this 400 page book, that are actual writings on a variety of political, cultural and economic topics related to Victorian American history. There are also some excellent photos as well as a number of fascinating written excerpts by ordinary Victorians on topics such as child labor, the union movement and bathing at Coney Island.

But, unfortunately, the vast majority of the book is devoted to charts, graphs and statistics. For example, there is "U.S Workforce, 1914" which breakdowns the exact number of people employed in 35 different industries or "Combined Totals of Persons Present In Local, State and Federal Correctional Facilities: 1880, 1890" which provides the number of people jailed, state by state, in these years. These are just two of the literally hundreds of similar charts in this book. If this sounds like dull reading - believe me it is. I did glance through at least some of the charts. But would have much preferred that these pages be devoted to actual writings about the the history of Victorian American. People looking for a textbook to study the era should probably look elsewhere.
