From Publishers Weekly
The Encyclopedia of Great Filmmakers pays homage to the personalities behind such films as The General (Buster Keaton), The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie (Luis Bu$uel) and The Player (Robert Altman). Cataloguing filmmakers alphabetically, University of Kansas theater and film professor John C. Tibbetts and Literature/Film Quarterly editor James M. Welsh have provided biographical portraits of more than 150 popular and influential filmmakers. Each entry gives an explanation of the filmmaker's beginnings and entry into the industry and then discusses his or her key films and their major themes. Appendices list great documentary filmmakers and great animation filmmakers.

From Library Journal
As noted film scholars Tibbetts and Welsh admit in their introduction, their roster of slightly more than 350 directors is "hardly a comprehensive one." The select few are each given two- to three-page entries, which are written with clarity and enthusiasm and end with brief bibliographies. The subjects come from many countries and ethnic backgrounds and include directors of experimental, documentary, animated, and silent films; special attention is given to American directors whose first films were released in the 1990s. Such a limited number of directors makes it difficult not to quibble over the selection Alan Alda instead of Warren Beatty, M. Night Shyamalan instead of Pedro Almodovar, and the fabled Alan Smithee instead of any flesh-and-blood director. Perhaps eliminating the generally small illustrations provided for about a third of the entries would have allowed the authors to add several more names to their roster. Complete filmographies are not included; instead, some films are mentioned in the text and the rest listed afterward. Unfortunately, only films cited in the text appear in the index, making access by film title incomplete. The index is also inconsistent in noting the directors' nationalities and ethnic backgrounds. The lively writing and emphasis on young American directors may make this title a good choice for high school or junior college libraries, but The International Dictionary of Films and Filmmakers: Directors, edited by Nicolet V. Elert and others, offers a considerably larger roster, more international scope, and better illustrations and indexing. Vivian Reed, California State Univ. Lib., Long Beach
Copyright 2002 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist
The title of this new set is a bit misleading, because "filmmaker" is limited in scope to "director." The set contains more than 350 entries on individual directors, arranged alphabetically by surname and generally ranging in length from one to four pages. The geographic and artistic range is expansive; the set attempts to embody a "representative selection of international 20th-century movie directors from across all film genres." Entries are written by film scholars, and the editors and contributors appear to have made selections based on personal preferences as to who they feel is significant.

Each entry gives brief biographical and critical commentary on the director, explaining his or her entry into the film industry, followed by a discussion of key films and major themes. The entry concludes with a list of "Other Films" not discussed in the essay and references from books and periodicals for further reading. More than 80 black-and-white photographs and drawings accompany the material. The encyclopedia concludes with a list of contributors and affiliations, a selected general bibliography, and an index.

As with any project of this nature, complaints are bound to surface over exclusions or inequitable coverage of the directors who are included. This encyclopedia does a laudable job of trying to include cinematic regions that are often neglected, for example, providing an entry on Brazilian director Mario Peixoto and discussion of his classic Limite and an entry on the African filmmaker Ousmane Sembene. However, at times the amount of coverage allotted to certain directors seems arbitrary. Established director George Cukor gets less written about him than contemporary indie Allison Anders. And sometimes important films are glossed over--Russian director Tarkovsky's Solaris is mentioned only in passing while his Andrei Rublyov gets an entire page devoted to it. More consistent in its coverage of directors is the similar-minded volume two of the International Dictionary of Films and Filmmakers (St. James, 2000), which also lists more comprehensive bibliographies and has a more erudite tone. Also comparable in aim is World Film Directors (H. W. Wilson, 1987-1988), which features longer essays but, despite its title, favors English-speaking countries heavily.

Providing a survey of important directors encompassing a wide range of geographical territory, The Encyclopedia of Filmmakers is recommended for public and academic libraries. It complements the International Dictionary of Films and Filmmakers and World Film Directors with some unique content amid the overlap. Because coverage is uneven, libraries already owning the other titles may not feel the need to add to their holdings. RBB

A good reference, but missing some key filmmakers
By A Customer
Sergio Leone, James Cameron, David Cronenberg, Tim Burton, and Dario Argento are all noticeably missing from this text. It would be hard to name every influential filmmaker of all time but that is precisely what the title of "encyclopedia" implies.
Consistency is important as well -- how does one name a filmmaker like Tarantino (pre-Kill Bill) and not make reference to Robert Rodriguez or Kevin Smith?! Admittedly, they are still as of yet unproven as "auteurs" but they have revolutionized the field of indie filmmaking perhaps even more than Quentin himself.
Two of my favorites that I hope will finally get some respect, having gone from ultra low-budget filmmaking to the mainstream are Sam Raimi and Peter Jackson. Perhaps the next edition...

Clarification
By Hugh Davis (HughHDavis@hotmail.com)
I just wanted to clarify where a previous reviewer questioned the absence of key filmmakers. While these volumes do have some figures missing (the danger in ever trying to create a reference like this), two he names--Tim Burton & Kevin Smith--are covered (and I know, as I wrote or co-wrote them). This volume suffers from what most film encyclopedias do--it is dated before it even appears, given the medium it covers; however, it is a useful volume even now (more than a decade after its publication), and it is good as a starting point for the interested fan.

The Responsibility to Protect: Ending Mass Atrocity Crimes Once and For All, by Gareth Evans

"Never again!" the world has vowed time and again since the Holocaust. Yet genocide, ethnic cleansing, and other mass atrocity crimes continue to shock our consciences—from the killing fields of Cambodia to the machetes of Rwanda to the agony of Darfur.

Gareth Evans has grappled with these issues firsthand. As Australian foreign minister, he was a key broker of the United Nations peace plan for Cambodia. As president of the International Crisis Group, he now works on the prevention and resolution of scores of conflicts and crises worldwide. The primary architect of and leading authority on the Responsibility to Protect ("R2P"), he shows here how this new international norm can once and for all prevent a return to the killing fields.

The Responsibility to Protect captures a simple and powerful idea. The primary responsibility for protecting its own people from mass atrocity crimes lies with the state itself. State sovereignty implies responsibility, not a license to kill. But when a state is unwilling or unable to halt or avert such crimes, the wider international community then has a collective responsibility to take whatever action is necessary. R2P emphasizes preventive action above all. That includes assistance for states struggling to contain potential crises and for effective rebuilding after a crisis or conflict to tackle its underlying causes. R2P's primary tools are persuasion and support, not military or other coercion. But sometimes it is right to fight: faced with another Rwanda, the world cannot just stand by.

R2P was unanimously adopted by the UN General Assembly at the 2005 World Summit. But many misunderstandings persist about its scope and limits. And much remains to be done to solidify political support and to build institutional capacity. Evans shows, compellingly, how big a break R2P represents from the past, and how, with its acceptance in principle and effective application in practice, the promise of "Never again!" can at last become a reality.

Review

"Evans cuts a fascinating figure on the world stage. Always informed, sometimes alarming, never dull, he has a diplomat's ability to listen and reflect, and a politician's will to dominate a room. He is also an able and prolific writer." —Scott Malcomson, New York Times Book Review

"Much of the book is an elaboration of the tools and strategies that are available to intervening states before, during, and after crises break out. The debate on when and how the world should act in humanitarian crises will continue-and this inspired manifesto will be its essential guidebook." —G. John Ikenberry, Foreign Affairs

"An account of the emergence of a new international norm--the responsibility to protect--by the person who has done more to develop it than any." —Allan Gyngell, International Studies

"No one is better suited than Gareth Evans to describe this revolution of opinion and trace its consequences." —Douglas Hurd, Survival

"The Responsibility to Protect is the most important and imaginative doctrine to emerge on the international scene for decades. No one is better placed than Gareth Evans to lead the debate about its scope and application to contemporary crises, such as Darfur, Myanmar, and Zimbabwe. And no one could have done it better than in this comprehensive and sophisticated book." —Louise Arbour, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, 2004–08, and chief prosecutor, Former Yugoslavia and Rwanda Tribunals, 1996–99

"We have been shamed so often by our failure to protect the victims of mass atrocity crimes. Gareth Evans's book is a passionate, lucidly argued, and immensely well-informed guide to how the world can do better." —Desmond Tutu, Archbishop Emeritus of Cape Town

"A tour de force.... Gareth Evans, more than anyone, has persuaded leaders to accept their responsibility to protect the vulnerable, and convinced us that we can no longer be passive bystanders." —Jan Egeland, UN Emergency Relief Coordinator, 2003–06

"Gareth Evans, one of the principal creators of the Responsibility to Protect, has written the first major work on this noble, important, and elusive concept. Anyone interested in international affairs should read this book on what is certain to be a continuing debate." —Ambassador Richard Holbrooke, U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations,1999–2001

"We can no longer ignore atrocities beamed into our living rooms. Our conscience demands that we react whenever people suffer, from Rwanda to Srebrenica, from Darfur to Gaza. This volume could not be more timely or relevant." —Kishore Mahbubani, Dean, Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, Singapore, and author of The New Asian Hemisphere

"I strongly endorse Gareth Evans's eloquent argument. This call to prevent terrible crimes against humanity like those I witnessed in Rwanda is one we must answer." —General Romeo Dallaire, author of Shake Hands with the Devil: The Failure of Humanity in Rwanda

A must-read if you believe in our common humanity
By Wolfgang A. Schmidt
Review of Gareth Evans' book The Responsibility to Protect

This clearly written book is a must-read if you believe in our common humanity and are interested in human rights and international affairs. The author takes the reader on a journey to the cutting edge of contemporary human-rights thinking and into the evolution of a new concept that, if realized, will save countless lives by preventing or ending mass atrocity crimes.

He lays out the case why governments share in a Responsibility to Protect (R2P), and how they all came to accept it - at least in principle - during the 2005 United Nations World Summit. This accomplishment is nothing short of miraculous given the relatively brief period of incubation during which the concept matured and managed to gain acceptance. It is all the more astounding since it adds an interpretation to the notion of national sovereignty, the most sacred of sacred cows behind which governments like to hide in order to shield themselves from accountability for actions and inaction alike.

In the past, turning a blind eye in the event of impending or ongoing mass atrocities seemed to be the default answer of the international community more often than not. This attitude was based, among other things, on a not so tacit consensus that sovereignty ultimately always trumps humanity. Now, however, by affirming their agreement with this new concept, the international community seems to be accepting that this solemn responsibility shifts from the national to the international plane in the event of a government's incapacity or unwillingness to meet its inherent responsibility to protect its own citizens.

The book is more than just the inside story, fascinating as it is, of how this all came about. In this sense it could only have been written by someone like Gareth Evans, who himself played a leading role in formulating and promoting the concept of the Responsibility to Protect. His book provides a comprehensive framework of strategies and tools to choose from before, during and after a crisis. It discusses a wide range of measures from the cooperative to the coercive that may be taken to enable or induce a government to change a situation.

Apart from being an excellent overview of the history, content and status of R2P and a veritable gold mine of information about the institutions and individuals involved, "The Responsibility to Protect" is a book of hope. It leaves the reader hopeful that R2P, while taking its due place in the history of ideas, will evolve into a strong international norm, despite the formidable obstacles its implementation will continue to encounter.

Hope also springs from the fact that a few determined individuals, dedicated to the cause of humanity and supported by a few sympathetic institutions, can have a huge impact and make an invaluable contribution to saving humankind from the insanity of repeating its most blood-soaked history. In this respect the book is a wake-up call and rallying cry for the rest of us to support those valiant efforts with all the means at our disposal.

Something that Can No Longer Be Ignored
By Bomb Man58
Mass atrocity crimes have been part of human history for many, many years. After the experiences of the Second World War, the world had vowed never again. Unfortunately despite that pledge, it was not able to live up to it, with various mass atrocity crimes occurring around the world until just recently. Mass atrocity crimes such as the Rwandan genocide have shaken the world into action. One of the main blockages to intervention has been the uncertainty due to the notion of state sovereignty.

After the various experiences of mass atrocity crimes in recent times, the UN Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, made this matter an issue at the 2000 Millenium meeting of the UN General Assembly. The cause has gained momentum since then.

Former Australian Foreign Minister and recently retired Chairman of the International Crisis Group, Gareth Evans, has also taken up the cause of the question of the responsibility to protect, or R2P as it is commonly known.

This book examines R2P in the context of intervening when the rule of law collapses and innocent people are left to the mercies of various factions and non-state armed actors; some of whom become extremely violent and hostile to various ethnic groups. The book also contains many personal glimpses at various key players in R2P, experiences in dealing with the steadfast determination of those people to see that something positive would emerge from these initiatives and the need to intervene in another state's sovereign territory in order to protect the innocent.

An extremely well written and researched book, which contains a great deal of background information on the subject and various leading personalities who worked to overcome what was sometimes perceived as something too hard. The book is well referenced and extremely useful to the student or researcher of international relations, international law, human security and the workings of the United Nations in this matter. Well done Gareth Evans, good on you...!

A very difficult task
By ewaffle
Gareth Evans makes a gallant and generally successful effort to convince his readers that mass atrocities, genocide or ethnic cleansing can be stopped by intervention into and against the countries where they are happening or about to happen. While I disagree with many of his conclusions there is no question that he is sincere in thinking that crimes against humanity can be stopped or kept from starting and his commitment to bringing the story to the world must be applauded. He has long experience: foreign minister of Australia, high level UN official, CEO of the International Crisis Group. Evans thinks the nations of the world can act in concert when faced with mass slaughter and that they have already created the framework to do so, lacking only the political will and ability to see beyond their own narrow interests.

His--and everyone's--example is the Rwandan genocide of 1994, the unfortunate signature event in the history of humanitarian crises since the end of World War II. Every nation and international body that didn't intervene had their reasons although none of the reasons stand up against the fact of the massacre of 800,000 Tutsi and moderate Hutu men, women and children during a three month rampage of blood lust. The United Nations had international troops already on the scene--and they were reporting to Kofi Annan, later Secretary General, at that time in charge of peacekeeping operations. The United States abdicated its role at the world's sole superpower--the memory of the disastrous mission to Somalia was too fresh in the minds of Bill Clinton and his advisers. Belgium, the former colonial power, turned its back on Rwanda.

Evans's premise is that such horrors can be halted before they start by a combination of political, legal, economic and diplomatic pressure and that military intervention would only be necessary if they fail. It involves international action before the killing starts in order to minimize horrors of mass atrocity and to keep military incursion as a last and rarely used resort. Again Rwanda is the example; only the ferocity and efficiency of the killing took anyone by surprise.

The difficulties in establishing a true responsibility to protect (R2P) citizens of a country no one's own are significant--I would argue they are overwhelming--and Evans doesn't try to diminish them. The first issue is state sovereignty. Evans thinks a system of limited sovereignty would be acceptable in the case of mass atrocity although there is little to support this idea, particularly when sovereignty and independence are among the only attributes that a state engaged in ethnic cleansing has. He thinks that the political leadership of countries in a position to intervene will do so even though they have refused in almost every case. Charges of neo-colonialism and neo-imperialism carry a great deal of weight when made by former colonies in Africa and Asia and have been effective in delaying initiatives particularly by their former colonial masters.

Evans writes well--he can even make the history of changes in UN resolutions sound interesting (or at least not dull)--and makes his arguments with every bit of moral and political persuasion he can muster which is quite a lot. But I disagree that the world has changed fundamentally in the past 25 years, that political leaders with myriad constituencies have become more altruistic and that we have decided to become our brother's keeper.

Many of the principals of the responsibility to protect seem derived from the Roman philosophical doctrine of jus ad bellum or just war. A key part of Catholic social teachings for centuries, the idea of just war has been accepted by most states and is ignored by just as many when it comes time to apply it.

This is an impassioned and beautifully written plea to our common humanity, one that Evans is particularly qualified to make.

Although estate and gift taxes raise a small fraction of federal revenues, they have become sources of increasing political controversy. This book is designed to inform the current policy debate and build a conceptual basis for future scholarship. The book contains eleven original studies of estate and gift taxes, along with discussants' comments. The essays provide background and historical information; analyze the optimal taxation of estates and gifts; examine the effects of the tax on charitable contributions, saving behavior, the distribution and level of wealth, tax avoidance and tax evasion; and explore the effects of alternatives to estate taxation.

Ceremonial Chemistry: The Ritual Persecution of Drugs, Addicts, and Pushers, Revised Edition, by Thomas Szasz

Thomas Szasz suggests that governments have overstepped their bounds in labeling and prohibiting certain drugs as "dangerous" substances and incarcerating drug "addicts" in order to cure them. Szasz asserts that such policies scapegoat illegal drugs and the persons who use and sell them, and discourage the breaking of drug habits by pathologizing drug use as "addiction." Readers will find in Szasz's arguments a cogent and committed response to a worldwide debate.

Review
"This highly original and fully appropriate title, something we have come to expect from Szasz's books, heralds an excellent sociological analysis of man's past and present relationships with drugs....Szasz takes the reader through a religious scenario as imaginatively symbolic and insightfully analytic as any morality play can be."

About the Author
Thomas Szasz (1920-2012) was professor of psychiatry emeritus at the State University of New York Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, New York and adjunct scholar at the Cato Institute, Washington, DC. He was a prominent figure in the anti-psychiatry movement and a critic of the moral and scientific foundation of psychiatry.

A PROMINENT "ANTI-PSYCHIATRIST" TURNS HIS ATTENTION TO DRUGS
By Steven H Propp
Thomas Szasz (born 1920) is Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry at the State University of New York Health Science Center. He is a well-known critic of psychiatry, of the social role of medicine in modern society, and is a social libertarian.

Szasz states in the Preface to this 1974 book, "My aim in this book is at once simple and sweeping. First, I wish to identify the actual occurrences that constitute our so-called drug problem. I shall show that these phenomena in fact consist of the passionate promotion and panicky prohibition of various substances; the habitual use and the dreaded avoidance of certain drugs; and, most generally, the regulation---by language, law, custom, religion, and every other conceivable means of social and symbolic control---of certain kinds of ceremonial and sumptory behaviors."

Here are some representative quotations from the book:

"(W)e had no problem with drugs until we quite literally talked ourselves into having one: we declared first this and than that drug 'bad' and 'dangerous'; gave them nasty names like 'dope' and 'narcotic'; and passed laws prohibiting their use. The result: our present 'problems of drug abuse and drug addiction.'"
"(W)e oppose illicit drugs not because they are the wrong chemicals but because they are the wrong ceremonials."
"(A)lthough the physician OFTEN fails to help his obese patients, he NEVER fails to help himself---to the patient's (or insurance company's, or some other third party's) money."
"The Harrison Act, passed in 1914, aimed ostensibly at controlling addicts, was actually used to control physicians. This act ... made these drugs legally available only through a physician's prescription for the treatment of disease."
"I have tried to show that the view which a society and the individuals in it hold concerning the use and avoidance of drugs depends, in very large part, on whether people regard their reasons for doing what they want to do as temptations or as impulses."

Institutionalized and state-sponsored persecution
By A Customer
An excellent analysis of the institutionalized and state-sponsored persecution of certain rule-breaking behaviour (illicit drug use)and the similarities between cultural and religious demands for specific mood-altering ceremonies and substances. This was the first book by Szasz that I read and I was impressed by depth of his philosophical and medical understanding of human behaviour. After reading this book I purchased, read and re-read the Myth of Mental Illness within 24 hours. Although Cermonial Chemistry was a delight to read, I think the Myth of Mental Illness is a timeless read and a comprehensive, logical and linguistic torpedo aimed squarley at an institutionalized war against human responsibility and the deep suspicion of the state against those who question through behaviour or language the role of the state in prescribing the rules of human conduct. Ceremonial Chemistry is an important book and a cornerstone in the debate on the inevitable de-criminalization of illicit drugs or the continued illegalization of certain foods and plants.

By Josh
I read this in college, it's a very interesting perspective on the drug war. Don't let this book fool you, it has some great ideas but some of his suggestions really go against scientific proof suggesting that chemical addictions don't exist.

Review

"The new text from Jacobs, Huang, and Kwon is fully worthy of the honor of being the first text reviewed in Cellular and Molecular Bioengineering. After reading through the clear, simple, but rigorous text, I can say that their work does far more than just tie together some important notes in a single binding....this text is potentially transformative for the field, much in the way that the famous texts by Beer and Johnston, in the 1960s were transformative for the undergraduate study of mechanics of materials and machines." - Cellular and Molecular Bioengineering

"This excellent book by a group of internationally recognized authors meets a real existing need in contemporary bioengineering education, and it does it effectively and successfully....The book was exactly what I wanted; it was entirely devoted to cell-scale problems, with numerous examples, each providing the relevant engineering or mathematical formulation, at a level suitable for good undergrad BME students....All chapters are comprehensible, logically-built and concise, and each is supported by high-quality graphics which add very much to the clarity of the contents...this book is a 'must-have'." - Computer Methods in Biomechanics and Biomedical Engineering

“…[Introduction to Cell Mechanics and Mechanobiology] touches on all the main current techniques used to apply force to cells and to measure the forces exerted by cells….the physics behind them is well explained and derived…The book sets up a good context for why one would want to study mechanobiology and gives some good tips for designing an experiment, taking into account the fundamental differences in biology and engineering practices.”

From Library Journal
Malka, the son of the longtime chief rabbi of the Sudanese Jews, is a retired businessman who has been deeply involved in world trade and Jewish communal activities. His work is a blend of autobiography, detailed record keeping, and the anecdotal history of a small Sudanese community that exists no more. Malka concentrates on the early part of the century, when Jews accounted for only a handful of the total Sudanese population. Most of them hailed from the larger cosmopolitan environments of Egypt, and most had emigrated by the 1960s, owing to increased tensions in the Mideast. Malka offers plenty of charming stories centering around the hospitality of the Malka household, where Jews from the world over were welcomed and a variety of languages, including Arabic and French, were spoken. Despite its almost folksy tone, this work would be best appreciated by scholars in the field. Recommended for libraries with comprehensive holdings in Jewish studies.?Paul M. Kaplan, Lake Villa Dist. Lib., Ill.
Copyright 1997 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist
Malka was born in the Sudan in 1910; his father was that nation's chief rabbi from 1906 to 1949. Malka chronicles the Sephardic Jewish community's history from its beginning in 1885 (when there were only eight families) to the late 1960s, when the Jews left the Sudan for more hospitable countries. Malka writes about his father's prominent role in the community and in the building of Khartoum's lavish synagogue and the community's growth, which peaked in the 1930s and 1940s. The author digresses a bit in his discussion of the Jews of Ethiopia, Aden, Yemen, and Eritrea and in his discourse on the growth of the B'nai B'rith in the Sudan, Egypt, France, and the U.S. The book's final chapters are autobiographical as Malka focuses first on his childhood, then on his travels, career, marriage, and family, offering descriptions of Sephardic life and culture. Only book on the Jews of the Sudan
By A Customer
In his richly illustrated book, Eli Malka tells of the handful of intrepid Jews caught in the 13 year battle between British colonial forces and an XVIII century fundamentalist desert warlord known as the Mahdi.. Acclaimed as of great importance by several prominent Jewish historians, the book tells of their travails and growth from that small group of Jews to a large and prosperous Jewish community. It tells of their dedicated and selfless rabbi, the building of their synagogue and Jewish recreation club, of the only B'nai B'rith Lodge in the african interior, of their difficulties during the Arab-Israeli wars and finally follows them through their dispersion into the diaspora. The reader gets an excellent picture of what it was like to live as a Jew in an isolated Moslem country.
Of interest to genealogists is the detailed histories of most of the Jewish families in the Sudan as well as an appendix listing all Jewish marriages that had occurred during the community's existence in the Sudan. The appendix alone makes this a must have for genealogy and Jewish history libraries.

Eli S. Malka is a respectful Sudanese jew, whereever he is, who left behind good reputation and an honest authentic book. He symbolizes peaceful linving-together and co-existence in between the Sudanese elites and economical mob within an ethnically diversitified network. I did't personally met him, but in fact, many elderly consider him as an 'honest brother' and a man of social integrity. He belongs to many Sudanese families who have jewish rootes. Incidentally, my wife's name is (Malka)!
Although I have only gone over an Arabic transcript of some of the book's chapters (on a Sudanese local paper) I love to get hold of the English version of the book .. It is worthhaving and worthreading!

Fifty years and a world away
By andrew
Any book about a small community is welcome as it adds information and comment where perhaps nothing existed previously (or even since!). Eli Malka introduces the reader to a very particular chapter in African history. This involved his family and several others who moved to the Sudan (t has to be said) on the coat tails of British imperialism on it's re-conquest of the largest country in Africa. Whilst few people today would say that the Mahdi period brought anything but savagery and unhappiness to thousands of people (inflicted by both sides) there may be a lesson for us today in the very similar growth of Isis in the Middle East.

Malka is at his best in grounding the reader in this period of history. Many similar stories exist of other families who spent significant parts of their lives in both British and French 'possessions'.They all share intimate insights into family life and the characters who are portrayed within the society they occupied.I did hope to learn more of an unknown great uncle (Bernard Goldring)but he isn't much more than a walk on part. You can't have everything!! I enjoyed much of his memoir but perhaps some of his business dealings were expanded to the point of tedium.

The book however is essential reading for anyone who is interested in the global colonial period from the perspective of someone who lived it. Malka is generally generous in his treatment of individuals and does not come across as bitter when his world disappeared in the post-colonial period. There were several clues (unintended) as to why there was antipathy towards the colonial power and it's fellow travellers. The best one is the story of the differential pension arrangements for employees depending whether they were European or Sudanese. Guess who got the worst deal?

Ancient Greece for Young and Old
By Kelly B.
The cover of this book has a dynamic picture of the famous ancient Greek temple, the Parthenon, in Athens. The contents of this book are divided into two parts. Part one of the book focuses mostly on the history of ancient Greece from around 1600 B.C. in the late Bronze Age to about 100 B.C. when the Romans conquered the Greek civilization. Part two concentrates on Greek culture and society. Some of ancient Greece's most famous sites are reviewed as well as other aspects of Greek culture such as art, architecture, myths, everyday life, entertainment, and housing. A nice aspect of the book is the inclusion of two pages solely devoted to the world of Greek women, discussing their daily life, their roles in society, and influential Greek women. There are many beautiful photographs and illustrations (all with informative captions), a few diagrams, a table of dates, and numerous maps. And because Greece was divided into many small, independently ruled communities or city-states, the abundant use of maps is very important and helpful to readers. The atlas contains a lot of excellent information, but as a whole, the information did not flow from one topic to the next. It is best suited as a resource for studying special topics of interest rather than a book to read from cover to cover. It is also more appropriate for more advanced readers.
