About the Author
JOSEPH A. ANGELO, JR., a retired U.S. Air Force officer (lieutenant colonel), is currently a consulting futurist and technical writer. He has a Ph.D. in nuclear engineering from the University of Arizona and served as a nuclear research officer in the U.S. Air Force (1967-1987) in a variety of scientific positions involving nuclear weapons development and nuclear treaty monitoring. He is also an adjunct professor in the College of Engineering at Florida Tech, specializing in nuclear radiation protection and waste management. Dr. Angelo is the author of 15 other technical books, including Space Technology (Greenwood, 2003) and Space Nuclear Power (co-authored with David Buden).

A Really Good Read

The thing that surprises me most about this book is its open discussion of satellites that at one time were so secret. Back in the early days of the space program our government did a great job of talking about how our satellites were doing peaceful space/scientific research. The Discoverer Program. How innocent a name. But Discoverer was just the publicly visible portion of the super secret Corona Program. Discoverer information was publicly given to the scientific community. Corona was taking pictures of the Soviet Union -- same satellite.
The Corona program was managed by the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) and the information was handled by the National Photo Intrepretation Center (NPIC). At the time, even the names of those organizations was so black, so secret that you just didn't mention them. In this book, fifty years later, the story of NRO and NPIC is laid out completely.
Of course that's just a small part of this book. The back cover says that it's aimed at high school students. It's got a wealth of information that anyone interested in the space program should find absolutely fascinating.
For instance, Global Warming is a hot topic these days, Al Gore's movie 'An Inconvenient Truth' is likely to get the documentary academy award. In this book Dr. Angelo talks about the prediction made by Svante August Arrhenius of Global Warming. A prediction he made in 1896.
A Really Enjoyable Read, if you're in high school, or if high school was a long time ago.
