A great intro book for the layperson

I bought this book since I was looking for a good book on fossils and minerals since I am a amature rock hounder. What a great find it turned out to be. The book would really be a great introduction for anyone interested in earth history, fossils, minerals, and global climate and other interesting areas of earth study. It would make a great gift to any young student, or rock hounder. Every time I pick it up I find facinating information on evolution, or oil shale, or trilobites. The book is a gem, and coming from someone who has bought and then thrown away quite a few like it, the best one out there in its class.

Although a bit outdated, I found this book to be very informative though it reads a bit like a textbook. What I found particularly helpful are the illustrations and photographs. They are absolutely wonderful.

Freshwater Fishes of the Northeastern United States

This book is excellent for the identification of common freshwater fish in the Mid-Atlantic and the New England regions of the US. The fish pictures are excellent and descriptions are extremely helpful. I have used this book extensively in my ichthyology class with great success. I would highly recommend this book to people in or going into any field where fish identifactication and ecology is important. The fish species in the book are limited to the fish of the North East, but the descriptions, and life history are useful everywhere.

Standard for fish ID

Although not all of the fish in my area are included in this book, a majority of them are. This book is what I would consider to be the standard for those looking for fish ID books. If choosing between this and Peterson's, this book is much more comprehensive. Good pictures, introductions to the families, arranged in a cohesive manner. Great book.

Excellent Book

Catalogues and gives a nice life history of each fish species found in the northeast, with the exception of the newest invasives since the book's last revision. The book does not cover some of the great lakes fishes, such as some Coregonids, Buffalos and mirror carp. and other very rare fishes, such as the summer sucker. Dichotomous key is helpful for fish ID, which I do a lot of for fisheries surveys,. This book should be used in combination with the Hubbs and Lagler. The other small downside to this book is that it lacks species range maps.

In My Los Angeles in Black and (Almost) White, the high school’s diverse basketball team serves as the entry point for a trenchant exploration of the judicial, legislative, and neighborhood battles over school desegrega­tion that gripped the city in the aftermath of Brown v. Board of Education and that continue to plague our “post-racial” nation. Furman accesses a diverse array of opinions about these years and about the current crisis of race and public education by examining landmark judicial decisions, public policy studies, and newspaper articles, and by interviewing key community lead­ers, including former U.S. Representative Bobbi Fiedler, the Jewish activist who led the campaign to stop forced busing in Los Angelese, and retired Superior Court Judge Paul Egly, with whom Fiedler and her allies wrangled. Furman also documents his recent visit to Los Angeles during which he met with sev­eral of his former teammates, coaches, and neighbors. At once critical and fair-minded, My Los Angeles in Black and (Almost) White cuts through the incendiary rhetoric over school desegregation to offer a lucid, engaging, and informed account of our long legacy and current challenges regarding race and public education.

About the Author
Andrew Furman is professor of English at Florida Atlantic University. He is the author of the novel Alligators May Be Present and two books of literary criticism, Israel Through the Jewish American Imagination and Contemporary Jewish American Writers and the Multicultural Dilemma, the latter published by Syracuse University Press. His essays and reviews have appeared in such publications as Poets & Writers, the Chronicle of Higher Education, Oxford American, the Miami Herald, and the Forward.
