From School Library Journal
Grade 5 Up?In attempting to list and describe the major spacecraft, robots, planets, supercomputers, and nonhumans that have appeared in books, comics, films, as toys and on TV, Rovin has bitten off more than he can chew. The 500 or so entries are arranged in a single alphabet and written to a template: name, media list, first-appearance citation, physical description, "biography," and additional comments?generally about authors or other creators, sequels, or series runs, related articles, name changes, and the like. The writing is straight description, almost devoid of personal opinion. Small black-and-white illustrations, mostly movie stills, are thinly scattered throughout. The author writes plenty about Howard the Duck, DC Comics' "Bunny from Beyond," Mystery Science Theater 3000, and Deep Space Nine, but his coverage of Larry Niven's aliens, or Robert Heinlein's, is incomplete (no Puppet Masters!). He directs only a token nod toward Andre Norton, missing the ETs envisioned by Ursula K. Le Guin and C.J. Cherryh, as well as Blish's "Cities in Flight" completely. Some of his information is dated. Still, most of the standard writers and artists are acknowledged, while legions of little-known machines, places, and creatures are resurrected. Not comprehensive enough to join his Encyclopedia of Superheroes (1985; o.p.) and Encyclopedia of Super Villains (1987; o.p., both Facts on File) in reference collections, this title will keep casual browsers engrossed for hours with its vast array of trivia.?John Peters, New York Public Library

From Booklist
If you want details of aliens or spacecrafts ranging from the popular ALF to the lesser-known Zazzala, this is the guide. Approximately 300 alphabetically arranged entries treat heroes and villains from comic books, sf magazines, TV shows, toys, radio, video games, trading cards, and films. The author, who also wrote the Encyclopedia of Superheroes and the Encyclopedia of Monsters, tried not to repeat entries from his other books and concentrated on characters that are well known. But also included are "wonderfully obscure" creations, works by unknown authors, and characters that are "fascinating."

Each entry describes the first appearance of the character or craft and its physical characteristics. For example, Battlestar Galactica traces its origin to a 1978 ABC-TV series. Usually entries are less than a page, with some especially famous stories (Superman, Gobots) running to three pages or more. An introductory guide explains media codes used in entries (e.g., Coneheads lists "TV, MP, C," meaning that it was first a TV show, then a motion picture, and then a comic book adaptation). More than 100 black-and-white drawings and photos add to the book's appeal. Five appendixes list the overflow of aliens and worlds from Star Trek, Star Wars, Outer Limits, and comic books. A bibliography is followed by an extensive index of authors, titles, actors, media, type of character (doctor, professor, princess), and subjects.

Even in such an ambitious work, it's certain that somebody's favorite alien will be left out. Where is Gamera the Invincible (outer-space turtle)? Why Ford Prefect but not Marvin the Robot from the Hitchhiker's Guide? Why list Zur (a world by Banister) but not the extraterrestrial Trisz (from another of his books)? Does the Delorean car in Back to the Future really qualify as a spaceship? Despite its inconsistencies, there's not a comparable work. It will be popular in circulating collections where Trekkies and fans of the X-Men will see how much they know about other worlds.

Texas (Compendium of the Confederate Armies), by Stewart Sifakis

This volume is part of a multi-volume work, organized by state. The first nine volumes are devoted to the regional histories of Alabama, Arkansas and Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas, Tennessee and Virginia. The tenth volume covers the border states of Kentucky, Maryland and Missouri, plus Indian units serving the Confederacy and multi-state units designated as "Confederates". The final volume is comprised of tables of brigades and higher commands, including names and ranks of their commanders and dates of their commands. In all, the "Compendium" will document a total of some 2000 regimental histories. Each volume's coverage is divided into groups for artillery (including heavy artillery, horse artillery, light artillery and siege artillery); cavalry (including dragoons, lancers, mounted rifles and partisan rangers); infantry (including mounted infantry, rifles and sharp-shooters). Within each of these groupings, units are arranged by numerical designations, followed by unnumbered units which are organized alphabetically by unit name. Each individual entry includes organizational information (including, where appropriate, the date and place of the unit's organization, muster-in, reorganization and final disposition - ie. disbandment or surrender); the name of the first colonel of the regiment, first commander of a battalion or first captain of an artillery battalion, followed by an alphabetical listing of all field officers of the command, with their ranks; the higher assignments of the unit - a complete listing of the various campaigns, battles and skirmishes in which the unit was engaged, complete with dates; furthur reading suggestions, as available, of unit histories and personal memoirs.

From Library Journal
With the release of five new volumes, Facts on File's landmark survey of the Confederacy's military units is nearly complete. This survey (see LJ 12/91 for a review of several early volumes) compares most favorably with Frederick Dyer's A Compendium of the War of the Rebellion (Morningside Bookshop, 1994), the standard reference for regiments of the Union armies since its original publication in 1908. For the most part, "Compendium of the Confederate Armies" is organized into individual volumes for each large state of the Confederacy; smaller states and miscellaneous forces are grouped as appropriate. Units are categorized by service branch. Entries are provided for every known Confederate unit, establishing its identity and presenting a brief narrative of its service, war record, and commanders. Information given for several South Carolina regiments was found to be consistent with Augustus Dickert's History of Kershaw's Brigade, published circa 1899. Although this does not assure the accuracy of Sifakis's facts, it is indicative of the resources he consulted. And therein lies the strength of the series: information from a wide variety of relatively inaccessible or little-known Confederate sources is now available in a single, well-organized work. Researchers at all levels of Civil War scholarship, including enthusiasts and genealogists, will find the series an invaluable reference. Highly recommended for all academic and larger public libraries.?Lawrence E. Ellis, Newberry Coll., S.C.

Gandhi, by Geoffrey Ashe

Few biographies capture the complex personality of Mohandas K. Gandhi (1869-1948)—theologian, philosopher, activist, and statesman—so successfully. Geoffrey Ashe separates myth from reality and clarifies the incredible polarities of his protagonist's life, from middle-class lawyer to non violent revolutionary, from family man to man of the world. The resulting portrait offers readers insight into a man whose example influenced the powerful and the impoverished, whose nonviolent activism impacted the national destinies of India and Pakistan, and whose teachings and techniques continue to inspire worldwide struggles for political, economic and social justice.

Review
Ashe demytholized both English humanism and eastern religion, and draws a portrait at once common-sensical and profound, There is akind of genius in [it]. (Michael Novak The New Republic)

Now, when [Gandhi's] name is so casually invoked, this biography will help keep (or set) the record straight on the Indian leader....If Gandhi should remains enigmatic, his life and techings are set forth in a book that is a model of fairness, proportion, and restraint....[Ashe's] quotations are pithy and pointed; the anecdores are spare but illuminating....It is refreshing to have a striaght of a very human being. Pays homage without avoiding personal foibles
By Jeffrey Leeper
This was my first book on Gandhi. I had gone to India and visited the monument to the Salt March and saw pictures of Gandhi with Nehru at Nehru's home. While I was there, the people of Delhi celebrated the birthday of Gandhi. This led me to want to learn more about Mahatma.
This book does not disappoint. First, I found that Mahatma was one of the many names that people created for him. It was not his born name. This book started with a brief explanation of the area, Gujarat, where Gandhi was born and raised. You learn some about his early family life.
The recurring theme I noticed was that Gandhi was always studying and trying to understand more. He experimented and was not ashamed to admit when he was wrong. He was truly a man of peace.
I did learn about some of his less than saintly traits. One mentioned in this book is that he would hold others to the same strict requirements (diet, labor, etc.) that he himself would do. He felt that if he could do it, others could to.
This book does not strive to show you what a saint Gandhi was or that he was some kind of flawed angel. It does show you that we truly worked to set the example for India to help it become independent and self-sufficient

Voices for Children: Rhetoric and Public Policy, by William T. Gormley

The United States spends more on programs for the elderly than it does on programs that enhance child development and improve child welfare. Why has public policy neglected the development phase of young Americans' lives not only in substantive dollars spent, but also in program design and implementation? Noted child care and education policy expert William Gormley highlights the portrayal of children's issues in both the mass media and in public policymaking to explain why children have gotten short shrift. A key explanation is the limited mass media coverage of strong arguments in support of children's programs.

After documenting changes in rhetoric on children and public policy over time and variations across policy domains and government venues, Gormley demonstrates that some "issue frames" are more effective than others in persuading voters. In two randomized experiments, he finds that "economic" frames are more effective than "moralistic" frames in generating public support for children's programs. Independent voters are especially responsive to economic frames. In several illuminating case studies, in Connecticut, Utah, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania, he finds that strong rhetoric makes a difference but that it is sometimes eclipsed by even stronger political and economic constraints.

Voices for Children offers a fresh perspective on raging debates over child health, child poverty, child welfare, and education programs at the federal and state levels. It finds some hopeful examples that could transform how we think about children's issues and the kinds of public policies we adopt.

Review

"Gormley's nuanced view of the broader policy environment highlights how policy frames are mediated by economic decline, fiscal constraints, public opinion, partisanship, and the political culture of states. Students of public policy, communications, and social work will benefit enormously from Gormley's contribution to the belated recognition in policy studies that discursive practices are critical to the policy making process. Summing Up: Highly recommended."―CHOICE

"Using a variety of research methodologies--including coding Congressional testimony, interviews with advocates and Capitol Hill staffers, case studies of state policy making, public opinion survey experiments, and more--Gormley looks at the use of various policy arguments in different policy domains and levels and branches of government across a 50-year time period. This multimethod approach provides a strong empirical basis to inform an understanding of how politicians, staffers, policy analysts, advocates, the media, and the American public frame children's policy, and it generates rich, timely, and valuable evidence that can be used by child advocates to develop stronger arguments in future debates over child health, child poverty, child welfare, and education policy."―Social Service Review

Advocates for Children or Education Should read this Book

Well researched and thought out, as well as clearly written. Excellent for anyone involved in advocacy on behalf of children or education. Probably not of great interest to the general reader.

From Booklist
Anyone who likes to tramp through the woods, reads the Arbor Day Foundation newsletter, or shops at home-and-garden centers can probably identify a fair number of common trees: maples, oaks, pines, and the like. Some folks can even tell a red maple from a sugar maple, a black oak from a pin oak, and a southern yellow pine from a Norway pine. However, there's a tremendous difference between identifying a living tree and identifying a piece of wood. Living trees offer lots of helpful hints: bark color, bark texture, foliage, seedpods, height, and overall shape. Seasoned, board-cut pieces of wood offer none of these hints, and that's why this specialized identification guide is so useful.

Thirty pages of introductory material, richly enhanced with outstanding maps, photos, and illustrations, explain tree anatomy, tree growth, wood grain, logging practices, conservation, and the various processes for seasoning and preservation of wood. This material is well written and beautifully presented. The real treasure, however, is the "Directory of Wood" section, which contains entries on 150 "top commercial timbers" arranged alphabetically by scientific name. Each one-page entry begins with a four-by-eight-inch photographic reproduction of the specific type of wood. The quality of the color photographs is so high that readers will be tempted to run their fingers over them to feel the wood's texture. Along with these photos are brief descriptions of growth patterns, appearance (the wood, not the living tree), properties, and uses. Closing out each entry are a small world map showing growth location and a small chart indicating structural features, such as impact resistance, bending strength, and crushing strength.

The Encyclopedia of Wood is a beautifully crafted identification guide for practicing woodworkers and others whose professions depend on wood. Libraries whose constituencies include such individuals should give it serious consideration for purchase. Art A. Lichtenstein

Succesfull coffee table-book, failed encyclopedia
By P. van Rijckevorsel
The strength of the book is the fine quality of the printing, the good color photographs and the enthousiasm of its makers, who obviously love crafting things of wood. This certainly is an attractive coffee table-book which may well inspire those who browse through it into making better use of wood than before.

As an enyclopedia it certainly does not make the grade. Obviously nobody with a botanical background was involved here. On page 20 is a remark about 'apetalous' trees that if ever I decide to award a price for the most-nonsensical-botanical-statement-ever will be a strong contender. The writers failed to pursue a consistent way of writing botanical names. Glancing through the book I note various errors in the history of the use of wood.

In addition the wood pictures, although of the same general size that is cute in "Identifying_Wood" by Aidan Walker (see there), a book derived from this, are pretty smallish on this big page size. I feel uncomfortable about some of the pictures which appear hardly typical of the woods they supposedly represent, and indeed some were replaced in the little book. As "Identifying_Wood" is not a bad book but unsuited for identifying wood, so is this "Encyclopedia_of_Wood" unsuited as a reference.

I don't want to give the impression that it is riddled with errors (I have seen much worse), but it falls well short of the level of, say, "The_International_Book_of_Wood" (1976) let alone of an encyclopedia.

P.S. I do hate the clumsy square shape. Obviously it was not meant to ever come off that coffee table: it decidedly would sit awkward on a shelf among real reference works.

---------
Second edition (dec 2006)

It is interesting to compare the 2005 second edition with the 1989 first edition. Firstly, the second edition has changed from the rather clumsy square shape to a more convential shape that will fit better on the bookshelf. Secondly, the second edition has retained the heart of the book, the descriptions of 150 woods, but has shifted from presenting two woods per page to one wood per page. This means that more of the book is taken up by these descriptions, and this has been compensated for by deleting the parts on crafted wood, which actually were among the more attractive parts of the book. What has been retained are the parts explaining trees and the structure of wood. These were rather riddled with errors in the first edition, and this does not appear to have been improved. The botanical information is even more out of date than the first time round (botany is on the move).

The 150 woods presented here are not quite the 150 of the first edition, although mostly they are. The presentation of these woods is much affected by the large color pictures: something like a third of the page is taken up by a color photograph of a longitudinal surface. Picture quality is fairly good, but perhaps a little on the dark side. Not always so good is the selection of actual woods to be photographed. It is not possible to understand how anybody could have mistaken the wood on page 46 for Kauri, short of complete blindness. But this is hardly the only failure to match the wood to the description. The descriptions themselves do not appear to have been changed, although the new woods of course do represent new content. This new content has been provided by Nick Gibbs, who also authored the "Real wood bible". The error on pau rosa in the latter book has been incorporated here as well. It is safe to say that all the errors on the identity of wood that are traditionally present in books aimed at the woodworker have been faithfully perpetuated here, yet again.

It is curious to note that although the "Real wood bible" (or its British equivalent "Wood handbook") share an author and a photographer, and were produced by the same publishing group as the present book, there is a quite notable difference in picture quality. The pictures in the "Real wood bible" are distinctly better in quality and more faithful to the original wood than in this book.

All in all, the second edition is not really an improvement on the first edition, losing the information on crafted wood (which made this a good coffee-table book), adopting a color scheme for the world maps that is a lot less clear, etc. Everything that was bad about the first edition appears to have been retained, except the small size of the wood pictures. The second edition loses a star.

For anybody looking for only the one book to own the "Real wood bible" is a much better choice. As the selection of woods is slightly different between these two books (and different pictures appear to have been used throughout) it may be worth owning both, anyway.

Good intro book for the beginner, but....
By A Customer
the major strong point of this book, as mentioned by others, are the nice color photos. the biggest complaint I have is with the small number of species listed - only 150, while other books have around 230 or more. this book excludes many of the woods i have used or have in my "shop." although there are many nice pictures in this book, the most important pictures, which are the samples of the different woods, are extremely small and are not always typical in appearance. take cherry for example. there is a nice section near the end that further discusses some of the more "important" or significant woods, such as oak, maple, yew, lignum, rosewood, lime, beech, etc. some sections, such as the discussion on man made boards, are a complete waste of pages in my opinion. I hardly think that a person buying a book about local and exotic woods needs any info on MDF. the only reason i gave this book 3 stars intead of 2 is because there is a pretty good amound of text for each wood listed, though other better books have the same feature. my advice is to save yourself some time and money by buying a book with info on more species

Excellent book for the money, but ...
By Lance Davis
To start, this is a very nice book, lots of nice pictures of things made from wood, location shots, and as much information as almost anyone would want to know about wood, in general. My problem is with the title word "Encyclopedia". "Thorough Introduction" would have been a better choice. As for the individual woods covered, the author selected about 150 which he expanded on nicely. Considering the thousands of woods in the world, 150 could hardly be considered encyclopedic (unless of course this was just volume one). There is a mixture of common and very obscure woods. I can only assume there was a reason behind the selection process. There was also a considerable bias toward European wood over the western hemisphere. The wood ID photos seemed a bit small at 1.25 inches square (about 3.3 centimeters for the Europeans).

So to sum up: excellent photos (except the tiny wood examples), lots of interesting information, reasonable price, wish there were more woods covered (which would have obviously impacted the price). Knowing what I know now, would I still have bought the book? Yes.
