When ancient Greek philosopher Democritus theorized that all matter was composed of atoms, the evolution toward nuclear power began. Several centuries of discoveries and an urgent desire to develop nuclear weapons during World War II accelerated competitive research and brought the world into a nuclear age, subsequently tempered by cold war secrecy and new understanding of nuclear waste hazards. Impressively, the authors cover all this ground in relatively few pages. Extensive scientific explanations are kept manageable, thanks to consistent references to their historical context; and descriptions of the nuclear race during the Second World War are especially riveting. Although details of the Three Mile Island mishap are disappointingly sparse, enough information is given about the aftermath of such disasters to give readers a clear sense of the dilemma still brewing about the future of nuclear energy and the removal of its waste from the environment. Beginning with the ancient Greek philosopher Democritus and ending with the latest theories about particle physics, the Kidds (Life Lines, 1999, etc.) tell the story of investigations into the atom and its uses. In a solid narrative style, the authors mix brief biographies of important scientists with the development of the atomic bomb and nuclear power plants. They avoid mathematical equations, but this is still a heavy dose of difficult science, aimed more at those already interested in the subject than at browsers. Readers come away with a basic understanding of how and why atomic bombs and nuclear power plants work, the problems involving nuclear power and their possible solutions, what particle accelerators do and how they work, and why continuing investigations into particle physics may eventually provide benefits to the world. Although ponderous, this is an extensive introduction that elucidates an arcane subject, for intrepid science enthusiasts or those who aspire to an understanding of the building blocks of the universe. Ignorance taints good intentions

This very thin book appears to be an attempt to present anelememtary and forthright history of the evolution of nuclear scienceand its technological products. Nice idea. The books 'my weeklyreader' style has the charm of simplicity and its lack of morarlizing is refreshing but the glaringly inept and laughable explanations of certain basic nuclear processes cast doubt on the scholastic integrity of the authors and attentiveness their publisher. Too bad. They had a nice start. END

Captivating brief history & introduction

If you are a quantum physicist or a cynical geek, you may not like this book... but you are not the target audience. If you are like most people, & just have an interest in finding out the basics of what happened, when & how it all lead to what we know, or don't know today, then this book IS for you. It could be thicker & more in depth, but then the target audience would probably pass it by. Lots of good, albeit basic, information told in the form of a short, interesting story. You will not learn how to build a nuclear reactor or weapon, but you will walk away with a basic understanding of how & why these things work.
