First published in 1911, Ameen Rihani's Book of Khalid is widely considered the first Arab American novel. The semi autobiographical work chronicles the adventures of two young men, Khalid and Shakib, who leave Lebanon for the United States to find work as peddlers in Lower Manhattan. After mixed success at immersing themselves in American culture, the two return to the Middle East at a time of turmoil following the Young Turk Revolution in the Ottoman Empire. Khalid attempts to integrate his Western experiences with Eastern spiritual values, becoming an absurd, yet all too serious, combination of political revolutionary and prophet. The Book of Khalid offers readers a heady mix of picaresque, philosophical dialogue, and immigrant story.
In this critical edition, Fine includes the text of the original 1911 edition, a substantial glossary, and supplemental essays by leading Rihani scholars. Demonstrating the reach and significance of the work, these essays address a variety of themes, including Rihani's creative influences, philosophical elements, and the historical context of the novel. Attracting a new generation of readers to Rihani's innovative work, this edition reveals his continued resonance with contemporary Arab American literature.

About the Author
Ameen Rihani (1876-1940) was a poet, writer, political activist, and intellectual who wrote in both English and Arabic. Born in Lebanon, he immigrated to New York as a child, where, along with Kahlil Gibran, he became part of the literary and artistic community.
Todd Fine is the president of the Washington Street Historical Society, an organization dedicated to the history and literature of the Little Syria neighborhood of Manhattan. He is a PhD student in history at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York.

The Best Help Around

I could list details but other reviewers have done this quite well. Enough for me to say, that after 30 years of teaching at the university level and exploring these kinds of "college assistance" books for just as long ... this one is THE BEST. It is extremely readable, more than a reference book, it is an engaging conversation with the authors about getting on with writing a chapter in your own life story - the chapter of your college career. I highly recommend that you take Drs. Rooney and Reardon along for the adventure.

College as an invetment rather than a cost

The uniqueness of American higher education lies in our large number of institutions that differ in type, mission, size, location, and cost. Grade 6 Up-This book presents readers with a fine combination of Navajo history and culture and background information about World War II in the Pacific. In historical terms, the story of the Code Talkers is a recent one as it was kept secret for many years after the war. Durrett describes the establishment of the program from its inception through declassification and the official recognition of the Code Talkers' contributions. The well-written text examines the failures, successes, and problems that the program encountered from training the first group of Marines until the war's end. It also stresses the fact that the Navajo developed the code themselves rather than just using the language as it is normally spoken. Sidebars add interest and details to the text. Maps and vintage photos are well placed and fully documented. One minor flaw appears; the text states that President Roosevelt declared war on Japan; legally, only Congress can declare war. This title is similar to Nathan Aaseng's Navajo Code Talkers (Walker, 1992), but it focuses more on the individuals who were part of the original 29 Code Talkers while still presenting an overview of the whole subject. It's a definite purchase for World War II shelves, especially if the collection does not include Aaseng's title.

With young people's interest in World War II piqued, thanks to the film Saving Private Ryan, this strong, well-written resource about the Navajo's role in the Allied victory is a worthwhile acquisition for both its military and its cultural value. Until 1969, when the Navajo Code was officially declassified by the U.S. government, the 420 Navajo Code Talkers remained unacknowledged heroes of the war. Initially, 29 Native American marines devised the code, using the Navajo's complex, inflection-sensitive language. Their work was not only indecipherable to the enemy but also remarkably efficient. What high-tech machines did in four hours, the Code Talkers achieved in literally two minutes. Such astounding facts, as well as stirring personal accounts of battle, make for fascinating, educational reading. Endnotes; selected further reading list. Roger Leslie

"Unsung Heroes of World War II: The Story of the Navajo Code Talkers" is a book I would highly recommend to anyone interested in the Marines' fight or special operations during the Pacific war. Also, this book would serve anyone well who is interested in the general history or contributions of the Navajo nation to the US war effort. In my opinion, the code talkers as well as the Navajo nation exemplify the Corps' motto of "Semper Fidelis - Always Faithful" by not only serving as Marines in a critical operation during combat but, also supporting a nation and government that had previously alienated and uprooted them from their homes and livelihood. This book skillfully depicts the history, situation, training, and critical operations of the Navajo Code Talkers during the U.S. Marine Corps' Pacific campaign in World War 2. It covers in greater detail, actions by the code talkers at Guadalcanal, Pelieu, Guam, and especially Iowa Jima.

About the Author

Richard N. Haass is president of the Council on Foreign Relations. Until June 2003 he was director of policy planning for the Department of State, where he was a principal adviser to Secretary of State Colin Powell on a broad range of foreign policy concerns. Previously, Haass was vice president and director of Foreign Policy Studies at the Brookings Institution. He was also special assistant to President George H. W. Bush and senior director for Near East and South Asian affairs on the staff of the National Security Council, 1989-93. He is the author or editor of ten books in American foreign policy, including The Opportunity: America's Moment to Alter History's Course.

The art of getting things done in a bureacracy - without marginalizing yourself, making enemies, or committing career suicide

Richard Haas's small book (Amazon lists it incorrectly as 260 pages -- the 1999 paperback, including bibliography, is only 198 pages) packs a tremendous punch. It is a one-of-a-kind, pragmatic primer with but one mission -- to increase the effectiveness of an individual who finds himself working in a large and uncoordinated organization, the kind of outfit where persuasion is paramount but the mission is often unclear.

The author uses a metaphor, a compass, to organize each section. The points of the compass are used to describe how the indiviudal should interact with those around him: north = bosses, south = subordinates, east = colleagues, and west = outsiders (media, Congress, and others).

The metaphor of a compass may be somewhat cliche, but it is only framework onto which is hung a surprising amount of very sage advice. Short stories are used as to illustrate each piece of advice given, from bureaucrats and public figures, both famous and obscure. The advice in this book covers a shotgun blast of topics: how to be an inspiring leader; negotiation tactics; chairing an effective meeting; surviving transitions and reorganizations; how to write a persuasive memo; etc.

I've worked in DC for the federal government for over a decade, and this book is the first one I turn to for advice and reminders of both what to do and what NOT to do, every working day. I highly recommend it for any individual who works in a bureaucratic organization.

The federal government is a unique place to work. Most people agree that it is more difficult to fire subordinates there than in the private sector and, due to the government's arcane hiring process, it is often a challenge to put the right person in the right job. Add to this mix Congressional oversight, the occasional media spotlight, the lack of a bottom line, and the big-picture question (not asked often enough) "what are we doing and why are we doing it," and you have an environment foreign to many private sector employees.
Enter Richard Haass's book the Bureaucratic Entrepreneur, an update of his 1993 primer the Power to Persuade. Haass has held a number of positions in previous government administrations, including at the NSC and the Defense and State Departments. His book is packed with words of wisdom for the harried bureaucrat who at the end of the day may wonder just what he accomplished. Although Haass's advice appears machiavellian (he argues that Machiavelli is often misunderstood) and the author does not have a firm grasp on whether his audience is the entry-level employee or the senior-level political appointee, it is worth putting up with these drawbacks for the original focus and insight on managing and leading in the public sector. The bibliography alone is reason enough to buy the book.
Low-level or high, every public-sector employee should read the Bureaucratic Entrepreneur before starting his or her new government job. They should then re-read it every few years to ensure that they are on track and using the tools Haass lays out to be effective in one of the most "unruly" organizations around.

The Faith of Freedom

Anna M. Speicher has written a fine study of five female abolitionists-Angelina Grimke, Sarah Grimke, Lucretia Mott, Abby Kelley, and Sallie Holley. Her book is an important contribution to the history of antebellum nineteenth-century United States reform, women, and religion. First and foremost, Speicher places spirituality at the center of the women's lives. Intuitive rather than institutional, a deep and abiding faith guided their private and public character, so much so that their "political activity was an outgrowth of their religious conviction." According to the author, recent feminist scholarship has often elided this point.
The book deftly weaves the biographies of each abolitionist with an exploration of political and social issues. Speicher provides a lively narrative of this group of like-minded females who all suffered from what she describes as a "double-marginalization." Their marginalization was a direct result of their dedication to black freedom as well as their daring desire to speak in public about the terrible sin of slavery. The resultant denunciations from many ministers and fellow reformers bound the women tightly in a web of faith, love, support, and community. This community gave them the courage to persist and succeed. In turn, all would serve as mentors for the next generation of women activists, such as the Civil War figure Anna Dickinson. The Religious World of Antislavery Women is an excellent exploration of the link between thought and action in an era when religion endowed women with the power to protest as well as to pray.
