About the Author
Dr. Byron L. Sherwin (z"l), a leading scholar in Jewish theology, served for over forty years as professor of Jewish philosophy and mysticism at Chicago's Spertus Institute of Jewish Studies. He is the author of twenty-five books and over 150 articles, including In Partnership with God: Contemporary Jewish Law and Ethics; Why Be Good? and Jewish Ethics for the 21st Century. Active in international Jewish communal affairs and interfaith relations, Rabbi Sherwin was the first recipient of the "Man of Reconciliation" award from the Polish Council of Christians and Jews.

a variety of unrelated essays, some better than others

Sherwin covers:
1. The idea of humanity being created in the divine image. Sherwin explains that Jewish thinkers have differed over the meaning of this phrase; some emphasize human intelligence, while others emphasize the free will to make moral (and immoral) choices.
2. Jewish attitudes towards health and healing. Generally, Jews consider the human body a glorious creation, and believe that healing is part of man's partnership with the Divine in healing the world.
And what of the Talmud's statement that "the best doctors are destined for Hell?" Sherwin suggests a couple of possible interpretations, including: (a) the "best doctor" in question is one who disdains Divine assistance, thus overlooking the spiritual dimension of healing; and (b) the "best doctor" is one who disdains the assistance of other doctors, and thus is more likely to make mistakes. Sherwin also quotes medical advice from Maimonides - some of which is still valid today (e.g. the virtues of exercise and the importance of adequate excretory functions). I thought this essay was by far the best.
3. A very interesting essay on euthanasia. Generally, Jewish tradition allows passive euthanasia, but abhors active euthanasia. Rather than leaving the issue at that, Sherwin goes on to discuss some Biblical and talmudic sources which could be read to allow active euthanasia in extreme circumstances. Sherwin's conclusion: the majority rule is that active euthanasia is strictly prohibited- but an innovative halakhist might be able to distinguish the rule in truly unusual circumstances.
4. Two essays on creation of artificial life- one on Jewish legends about golems (i.e. creation of artificial life), and another focused on recent discussion of human cloning. Medieval Jewish commentators have allowed creation and destruction of golems- a theory that has been used to justify human cloning, artifical conception of embroyos, etc. as examples of Divinely-inspired human creativity. Sherwin suggests that artificially concieved embryos are golems and thus could be created or destroyed without too much difficulty.
But this claim raises a difficulty that Sherwin fails to address: is there really no difference between a newly generated frozen embryo and an 8-month-old fetus?
Sherwin does mention that Jewish law generally prohibits abortion, but a better essay would have explained the relationship between abortion and the golem/embryo question in more detail.
He does briefly discuss abortion, describing it as "a tort rather than a crime" under Jewish law. But this phrase is confusing. A tort is normally committed by A against B; abortion, by contrast, is often consensual between a woman and a doctor. A more accurate (and clearer) way of describing abortion-related halacha is that abortion is generally (but not always) prohibited under Jewish law.
5. An essay on parent/child relationships. Most of the essay is just common sense; however, one very interesting point is Sherwin's discussion of parents' duties to children. Although parents must teach their sons Torah and teach them a trade, their obligation of financial support ends at age 6 - a relic of the days when male children were often apprenticed to craftsmen. (Sherwin doesn't say much about duties to female children).
6. An essay on charity under Judaism. Here, Sherwin views Judaism and Christianity as quite different, and rejects the notion of a common "Judeo-Christian ethic". Judaism views support of the poor as an individual and collective duty, and creates specific halachic requirements governing such tzedakah. And because Judaism views the world as unredeemed, it takes some poverty as a given.
By contrast, Christianity assumes that the Messiah has already come, and views support of the poor as an act of love. As a result of these tendencies, Christianity encompasses a much wider range of views, from Christian leftists who believe poverty can be eradicated tomorrow to "prosperity gospel" Christians who view wealth as a reward for goodness and as a result aren't tremendously interested in the issue.
7. An essay on repentance that didn't tell me much I did not already know- essentially, that repentance is good.
