Each section has a map showing the sites of subjects mentioned in the text. The lively and readable text includes tales of doctors who successfully perform "psychic surgery" without anesthesia, curses of the Pharoahs, the vanishing hitchhiker, and phantom dogs (the basis of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's The Hound of the Baskervilles). The book is more suited to browsing than in-depth research because it covers each topic on double-page spreads-thus no subject exceeds two pages; in addition, the index is rather brief. The format and illustrations will make this volume popular, and may require a second copy to fill the demand.

Both a wonderfully readable reference book and a delightfully detailed ghost-story book, this is a quintessential product of the age of "infotainment." In its geographically specific sections, brief narratives spiced with specific names, dates, and places (a rare feature of books on this subject) delineate experiences with ghosts and other supernatural phenomena. Cavendish's narrative voice is one of neither fawning belief nor arch speculation but of neutral reportage. Some entries give the particulars of such well-known stories as those of Anne Boleyn and the other ghosts said to haunt the Tower of London. Other stories are less known, like that of Esther Cox, a young Canadian suddenly beset in 1878 by all manner of bizarre phenomena (in her case, the strange occurrences "were observed by the local doctor, clergymen, and other reputable witnesses"). Other chapters cover the topics indicated by such titles as "Sex and the Sacred" (for example, the sexual proclivities of some Hindu deities and their worshipers), "Of Royal Blood," and "From Salem to New Orleans." With a little supernatural something for virtually everybody, this is a prize for the public or school library. Mike Tribby

Interesting look at the mysteries among us..

I bought this book a few years ago, discarded under a pile of obscure books and listed at 75% off. However, if I had been deterred by the obvious misuse of this hard cover encyclopedia of the supernatural, I would never have gotten the chance to read and reread it the scores of times I have, nor would I have become so deeply interested in the fascinating world of the Occult.
Cavendish has collected a marvelous number of stories and unexplained incidences that have continued to haunt our rational existence. Accompanied with vivid pictures and organized by continent and country, 'The World Of Ghosts and the Supernatural' is both a lovely and occassionally frightening read.
However, sometimes the lack of elaboration on some of the subject matter left me a little unsatiated. Cavendish, whilst stopping his book from being as thick as a phone book, and perhaps containing too much useless, boring information, has only allowed 2 pages per subject. This, along with the large pictures and subtitles, make the book a little sparse on detailed information.
So, while it is fascinating to read, it is really more of an introduction into these perplexing world mysteries, then an extensive voice on the subjects therein.

The Supernatural Worldwide....

I really enjoyed this book. I liked the format, the layout, the design , everything.The text was lively , informative and packed a lot of information about the subjects in only 2 large pages each.I also enjoyed the way pictures were employed in this volume. Movie stills were a clever way to illustrate the subject matter and the other real life pictures were great also.
The only possible complaint I have with the book is is that the author apparently disapproved of Western Missionaries converting Native peoples and he let that be known.This was a factual type book and I wondered if it hadn't of been best for him to not interject his own views on that even though he did it in a somewhat subtle way. But that is a very minor point and in no way takes away from the quality of the book.I like the authors writing style and will buy more of his books in the future.
