This reference book of more than 1000 entries on major radio programs is a revision and repackaging of Lackman's Same Time Same Station (LJ 11/1/95). This edition presents capsule descriptions of radio's most important dramas, comedies, game shows, news programming, and personalities from the 1920s to the present. Not much has changed from the previous edition, but Lackman's attention to details such as programming schedules and show sponsors is noteworthy. Invaluable as a guide to dramatic programming during the "Golden Age" of radio, this book is also a useful source of information about contemporary radio personalities such as Howard Stern and Don Imus. Vintage black-and-white photographs are sprinkled throughout the book. Lackman also includes several appendixes (e. g., a list of radio stations that currently broadcast old-time radio shows and an exhaustive list of radio dramas that appeared in anthology programs). Recommended for public libraries and for academic libraries serving schools with communications departments that don't already have Same Time Same Station.

A History much Needed

Much information on radio shows of the past, which you don't see much of. Brought back a lot of memories as I grew up without TV.

There needs to be a better version

As others have already mentioned, there are many errors throughout this book and most of them are due to sloppiness, carelessness, or maybe laziness. Most of the mistakes that I have come across, including titles, years, names of people involved, program lengths, would be easily fixed. OF course it becomes overwhelming when you realize that if somebody who isn't even a radio historian has spotted that many mistakes, there must be hundreds more that I'm not even aware of.

But just as bothersome as the many glaring factual errors is the emphasis in the write ups of each program. A great deal of importance is placed on the names of the announcers and the sponsors, sometimes taking up a large portion of the thumbnail sketch, while very little is said about the nature of the actual program; the writers, the storylines, the changes undergone by the show; for instance that Burns and Allen went from being a somewhat surrealistic show about two people who were in a show together but were not romantically involved to being a show about a married couple that took place in their home (and not at the studio) seems to me to be something worth mentioning.

Definitely Not An Encyclopedia

As the former editor of an Old-Time Radio club newsletter, a writer for several other Old-Time Radio clubs, and an Old-Time Radio researcher, I know that careful research is an important step in the writing of accurate factual material.
While this book is an improvement over its predecessor, "Same Time, Same Station," there are still too many factual errors in this book for it to warrant consideration as an Old-Time Radio "Encyclopedia."

A few examples of factual errors.
It was Virginia Christine and not Virginia Gregg who appeared the motion pictures "Judgement at Nuremberg" and "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner." Janet Waldo did not play Alice in the Disney classic "Alice in Wonderland;" Kathryn Beaumont played Alice. Janet Waldo played Alice in the Hanna-Barbera 1966 version of "Alice in Wonderland."
These are easily verifiable facts and yet the author got them wrong.
I verified that Virginia Gregg did not and that Virginia Christine did appear in the preceding two motion pictures by checking the cast credits of the movies in several motion picture reference books.
I verified my facts on "Alice in Wonderland" by checking the Disney and Hanna-Barbera cast lists and by talking to Janet Waldo about her role as Alice during the course of an interview.
I cannot recommend this book.
One's money would be better spent by purchasing John Dunning's "On The Air: The Encyclopedia of Old-Time Radio."

About the Author

This book changed my life.

I checked this book out of my local library when I was 12. I read it cover to cover and have never been the same since. It helped shaped my creative interest at a young age and opened a whole new world of goblins, vampires, zombies, and 50 foot women. This is a very detailed and thorough examination of a dying art form. Pick this up for your preteen kid and you won't be sorry. If there not a big fan of monsters, they will be.

Amazing book, an abosulte must read for monster fans.

I can't believe this book only has 4 reviews. The Encyclopedia of Monsters is a huge, oversized paperback containing an amazing amount of research into hundreds of films, books and comics from the silent era to the late 80s. It lists all the statistics of each monster, a summary of how the monster acts and functions, a summary of the film itself and then goes on to talk about that film's production, effects, behind-the-scenes-drama, and all sorts of trivia. It's truly a great book for anyone interested in monsters.

Great Book

I read a very positive write up of this book in Herpetological Review when I was in college and so bought the book and absolutely love it! The taxonomy is clear and concise, the pictures superb and all the information is first rate. Ideal for the up and coming herpetologist or anyone interested in a general overview of herps.

Not What You May Think

For those who are looking for a guide to the poems, I would suggest David Ross' "Critical Companion...." which is far more informative when it comes to each poem, although he does not analyze every poem. Unterecker's work attempts to present overall themes that unify the diversity of masks that Yeats often assumes but too often waddles into biographical interpretation. For instance, a poem about the poet's spiritual struggle to create amid a chaotic world that makes so many demands it could spiritually kill you, evolves into a commentary on Yeats and the idealized female and the parallels of that real person to an Irish myth. Yeats often uses this motif, but it serves as an idea to think beyond the simple relationship of a man obsessed with a woman. This approach is interesting - and sometimes helpful- but, as one reviewer said, the text reads like a high school essay of sorts. Consequently, the title should not claim to be a guide but an overview of the works by a complex writer.

Disappointing.

I was hoping for a companion to read alongside the poetry, helping me understand Yeats' sometimes complex language and obscure imagery. Unfortunately, the Reader's Guide is a set of obscure essays on what Yeats may or may not have meant, with no connection to specific poems except that most of them are touched upon somewhere in the index. Nor does it make up for its lack of practical usefulness by being brilliant in itself; it reads like an overwrought book report.

I suppose it would be too much to hope that somebody would write a line-by-line translation into accessible modern American English, but that's what would help this American enjoy Yeats.
