YA-Events during the 1980s as they affected the U.S., other continents, and the world in general are covered in these hefty two volumes. The entries-addressing politics, economics, culture, and recreation-are mostly complete, but there are some exceptions, e.g., for Dec. 3, 1989, "The universities of Virginia and Santa Clara share the National Collegiate Athletic Assoc. Division I championship after playing to a 1-1 tie in the finals." What sport were they playing? A reference book without an index is nearly useless, and this book's is so inadequate that it is not reliable. Also, it's placed at the end of the second volume, and since each tome weighs nine pounds, it is awkward handling both. Under the main topic "Challenger," there are three references, none for the day of the disaster, Jan. 28, 1986. At least 12 other entries about the Challenger are not indexed. For the "Lockerbie air crash," there are three references, but four entries. The only entry listed for the Football Strike is Sept. 30, 1982, but it began Sept. 21 and there are at least five other entries that are not indexed. Main topics are not highlighted in bold, which causes difficulty in reading long columns with many subtopics. Libraries should consider carefully if their need for this type of information outweighs its shoddy indexing.

animation heaven

this book lives up to it's title. it doesn't discriminate between new cartoons and the good ones from the past. it's very detailed (some words are missing in two or three show synopsis reports, the writer was probably reading in his mind what he was wanting to write and he got ahead of himself and left out a word or two he thought he wrote...it happens to me all the time). well, this book tells brief histories of cartoons and the voices behind them. it's a nice companion book to The Encyclopedia of Game Shows. it was published in 1999 and so at the time "The Bugs Bunny and Tweety Show" was still on the air but that program was pulled off ABC in 2000 because they said that 60% of the parents today feel that children don't need cartoons in their lives. NBC had already yanked animated shows off the air and ABC soon followed by pulling off nearly all of it's animated line-up. currently, Saturday mornings have very few "real" cartoons, it's now nothing but claymation, Japanese stuff, or shows aimed at very little children. i can remember being 10 or 11 (1986 and 1987) and STILL getting up early on Saturday mornings to watch "Popeye", "Wacky Races", "Scooby-Doo", "Bugs Bunny", "Clue Club", "Jabber Jaw", "Super-Friends", and the list goes on. even when i was 16 i watched USA Network's "Cartoon Express" until they started replacing the good cartoons with the newer stuff. i was raised on cartoons made in the 1930's through the 1980's but being 9 and 10 years old in the mid '80s i never knew about such things as an old cartoon and new one. to me "Yogi Bear" and "Bugs Bunny" were as contemporary as the "Smurfs" and "He-Man". i still watch the classic Warner Brothers cartoons late at night on weekends on Cartoon Network. i also love the classic Hanna-Barbera cartoons and the ones they did in the 1980s (revivals of their older shows with children casts, "Flintstone Kids", "A Pup Named Scooby-Doo", plus "Tom and Jerry Kids", in the early '90s). this book is a must for animation fans; artists; fans of Daws Butler, Don Messick, and Mel Blanc like i am; plus it's broken down into different themes such as theatrical feature length cartoons, made for TV cartoons, award winning cartoons, etc. it's a great book.

The Greatest Animation Reference Guide

This is THE best cartoon encyclopedia I have ever stumbled upon. It lists nearly every cartoon ever made (by nearly, I mean some programs that weren't shown in America aren't in this book). The book is split up into five different sections:
1. Silent cartoons from the 1910's to the 1920's
2. Theatrical "sound" cartoons (i.e. Mickey Mouse, Bugs Bunny, etc.)
3. Cartoon movies
4. Cartoon television specials
5. Cartoon television series
Everything is listed alphebetically, so it's not too hard to find your favorite cartoon. Although there are some errors in the book, such as slight mistakes in voice credits. But other than that, it's a great book. Specials and series that you never thought anybody remembered are listed in this book.

Amazing in its scope, but should have gone a bit farther.

I have been searching for this book since I was a child; I ran across an early version in a library about 15 years ago, and just this last week did I find this, most recent (2nd) edition, copyrighted 1999.
This book attempts to list and describe every animated theatrical short, theatrical feature, television special, and television series that has been shown in America. It does an amazing job- much more thorough than any other source I have seen. It contains listings of Japanese series not mentioned in "complete" anime guides; many of the listings are not acknowledged on IMDB. Hell, it lists Jot (the Dot), an animated religious show that only I seem to remember. It covers cable series, silent b/w shorts, everything... but it still doesn't go far enough.
On first perusal, I noted several missing features. For a book copyrighted 1999, there should have been mention of A Bug's Life or Antz. Even if the book were from 1997 (the information does not seem to go beyond this), where are the listings for Ghost in the Shell and Urotsukidoji (both of which had somewhat successful art-circuit theatrical runs)? Even odder, the book does not have a listing for Disney's WW2-era animated feature "Victory Through Air Power", but it's mentioned in the appendix covering Oscar nominations. It's missing Robotech the Movie (limited run), too...
Besides the missing entries, the one section the book desperately needs (in an update or companion book) is a listing to all of the straight-to-video animation that has been available over the years. There has been a deluge of anime, plus many American efforts (including many Bluth, Amblin, and Disney works), and many smaller unknown works that should be documented somewhere... (UAV's An Ant's Life: Bugs Bite, for example, an original 45 minute OAV marketed as an Antz/Bug's Life rip-off).
I have other complaints; slight inaccuracies in titles (It's Snoopy Come Home, not Snoopy Comes Home), a lack of information regarding home-video availability, and smaller/absent text pieces describing each work. Also nice would be opinion of some sort- on the quality of the animation, story, character design, etc. Some sort of non-objective review... after all, the author *is* well-versed in animation history, and his opinions would benefit those of us wanting to study animation seriously.
Despite my negative comments, though... this is an incredible book. It joins a lofty, small pantheon of indispensable pop-culture reference books; the Looney Tunes/Merrie Melodies Guide, Total Television and the Prime Time TV Show guides, the various Videohound guides, and the various anime reference guides. My complaints are only due to the fact that such a great book needs to be polished to perfection.

Entries vary in length from one or two paragraphs to several pages, with most being of the shorter variety. Recent artists, such as young producer Puff Daddy (with a cross-reference from Diddy, his most recent name change), are included. Frank Hoffmann is a professor of library science at Sam Houston State University. He has worked as a disc jockey, record reviewer, and music features writer. He has written three dozen books and recently edited the two-volume Encyclopedia of Recorded Sound. Albin J. Zak, III, Ph.D., earned a doctorate in musicology from the Graduate Center of the City University of New York and is currently chair of the music department at University at Albany (SUNY). His publications include The Velvet Underground Companion and The Poetics of Rock: Cutting Tracks, Making Records.
