This is a book that was waiting to be written, and Maxim Shrayer has done it masterfully! A chronicle of a journey that truthfully captures the tensions, expectations, and emotions of a family between two worlds...

I enjoy reading the book of Maxim Shrayer "Waiting for America". One of the editorial reviews wrote about the book: "Its focus is two months of freedom as a young Soviet émigré--full of girls, parents, crazy relatives, sightseeing, funny stories, books, and relief to be on a new road in life." Apparently many people-émigrés in Ladispoly felt similarly, until the situation had drastically changed in 1988, when the U.S. Government unexpectedly refused entry visas to thousands of Soviet refugees. That changed everything. The comparatively smooth path to freedom overnight became full of dramas and emotions. Leaving Ladispoli in 1987 the author wasn't able to witness changes in Ladispoli's life during 1988 - 1990.. This period for the first time was very well described in the book "The Door Slammed in Ladispoli: Unknown Pages of the Soviet Immigration to America " by Sol Tetelbaum. I recommend everybody interested in immigration to USA in 80-s and 90-s also to read the book by Sol Tetelbaum.

It's beautiful read, full of good memories and feelings.

Around half a year ago, I noticed this book at O'Hara Airport bookstore. I thought it should be a good read for my flight to Salt Lake, something which could keep myself entertained for 3.5 hours. Coming to America not only kept me entertained for duration of the flight it also left long lasting impression, brought back long forgotten memories of time spent in Italy. Back in a `89 my family was were for the same reason - Waiting for America. Author describe the places which are not a part of the regular tour book of Italy, but they are came back alive in my memory ( like yesterday ) while reading this book. Maxim Shrayer describing events in a right place and in a right time, my eyes sow the same things at the same time he describing in a book, I could relate to every page in a book, it took me by the soul. I just wanted to say a BIG THANKS - Большое Спасибо, for such a beautiful read, full of good memories and feelings.
