Dull and pedantic.

If you are interested in the much-neglected topic of New York's slave history, I recommend _Somewhat More Independent_ by Shane White, who examines both the legal and social aspects of New York's slave society.
This book is just dull. The author doesn't seem really interested in the topic. He doesn't attempt to see slavery from the slaves' point of view. He seems mostly interested in excusing New York for having been the North's largest slaveholding state; he tries to convince the reader that really it wasn't all that bad.

History without people

The history courses that I took many years ago in NY schools discussed slavery mostly in the context of Southern plantations. I bought this book hoping to learn about the workings of slavery in my native state. I was very disappointed. On first opening the book, I was astonished to note that the name "Sojourner Truth" is not in the index. I soon realized that Dr. McManus is one of those historians who prefers his history without any people cluttering it up. He has produced a work filled with dates, numbers, laws, statistics and footnotes. But almost all trace of individual slaves and masters has been left out of his version of the history of slavery in NY.

Great insights and Great fun!

Some of enjoy knowing more than just the stage personal of our favorite country music stars... and I'm one of those people. BEHIND CLOSED DOORS is the key to the personal lives of some of the biggest stars in country music. It's not fluff. It's fun and funny, it's sometimes down and dirty. People seem to want to "open-up" to Ms. Nash and she lets them. It's certainly never disrespectful but this book tells their stories and holds one-on-one interviews with everyone from Roy Acuff to Tammy Wynette & from Chet Atkins to Hank Williams, Jr. Published in 1988, Behind Closed Doors is time travel back into where these artists where 25 years ago... where we get to read what they said, thought and did back then, knowing how it was going to turn out for them while they didn't. A rare intimate and personal look into the lives of the legends of country music. A great read.

Fascinating look at country legends.

The shelf of good books on country music is a small one. However, this is one of the best. It contains thoughtful, often amusing interviews with a number of country and western entertainers, some famous, a few not so famous.Most of the interviews are excellent and highly informative. There are only a few "clinkers" for example, she takes David Allan Coes intermittently amusing messianic rant a little too seriously. However, that is the exception. Most of the conversations, especially with women , offer real insights. For example, the interview with Lacy J. Dalton tells the reader much about the life, and the beliefs, of that sadly neglected talent, while the interview with Loretta Lynn possesses an odd poignancy.

So what is Dolly really like? And is she really that big? Those looking for such titillating tidbits should turn elsewhere. This collection of interviews with some of country's biggest names (Wynette, Judd, Jones, McEntire, Acuff, Pearl, Monroe) focuses more on the "real" side of the perfomer and person ... in other words, there's more talk of music and radio play than wigs and full figures and rhinestone cowboys. Nash, a veteran country music journalist, uses her comfortable, conversational style to get the people to open up. This reissue (the tome was first unleashed in 1988) doesn't offer anything we don't already know, but it's handy to keep on the shelf just in case you really want to know Emmylou's take on overdubs.

A Burroughs anthology at last, and a superb one!

Charlotte Walker, a professor of English at the State University of New York at Oneonta, has assembled the first anthology of critical essays on the naturalist, literary critic, poet, and philosopher John Burroughs (1837-1921). This is an extraordinary collection. Walker includes a wide array of voices, many of them (including my own) from outside academia. All have important things to say about Burroughs, who once towered above the American literary landscape but whose reputation has been eroded by time. A renewal of interest in the work of the Catskill-born Burroughs is underway, and this book is both a product of that movement and a light to lead the way. As the author of a concise biography and appreciation of John Burroughs ("The World of John Burroughs," published by Sierra Club Books), I congratulate Walker on a job brilliantly done.

About the Author
David Marc is a writer and editor who teaches at Syracuse University and Le Moyne College. He is the author of "Demographic Vist"as (1984; 1996), "Comic Visions" (1989; Blackwell, 1997) and "Bonfire of the Humanities" (1995).

Robert J. Thompson is a Professor at Syracuse University, where he heads the Center for the Study of Popular Television at the S. I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. His books include "Adventures on Prime Time" (1990) and "Television's Second Golden Age" (1996).

Susan J. Douglas is the Catherine Neafie Kellogg Professor of Communication Studies at the University of Michigan. She is the author of "Listening In: Radio and the American Imagination, Where the Girls Are: Growing Up Female with the Mass Media, " and "Inventing American Broadcasting, 1899-1922." Her journalistic articles have appeared in "The Nation, Ms., In These Times, TV Guide, " and "The Progressive."

Finally, a realistic book about TV's effect on education.

I am a doctoral student in English and I teach multiple sections of Freshman Composition. This is the first book this presents a recognizable picture of the contemporary classroom: a place where literacy is taught as a specialist's skill to students immersed in television culture. If you are interested in the future of reading and writing, I recommend this book highly. It is also hilariously funny.

20 years on: a walking fireball of rage

Published in 1995, this is an engaging diatribe against the effect of television on American youth, and in particular on the abilities of those young people who enter humanities courses in college.

I don't have much a problem with his thesis, which basically boils down to nitwit children versus his professorial magnificence. But, man, the book was published in 1995, which means it was written in the early 1990s. And he is complaining about television. Television!

If Mr Marc is still around, he must be a walking fireball of rage by now. If mere television upset him 20 years ago, what does he think about the internet, twitter, facebook, etc. Recommended for its historical value.
