A Must for Career Artists!

I had the privilage of studying with Dr. Dunning the last two quarters of his teaching career. I can only give the highest praise for this book. Dr. Dunning's knowledge is supported by experience, not only his own, but that of the thousands of students he has prepared for sucessful careers in the art world. The advice he gives in this book is the same that he has taught to university art students for over 30 years. The stories he tells are real, the analogies varied and all sucessfully illustrate his points. This isn't a book full technical terms, but one written for anyone to read and understand (and often even laugh with). Though written from the perspective of a painter, Dr. Dunning's knowledge and insights are very applicable to any of the fine arts as well as disciplines outside the art world. The information on setting up your studio alone is well worth the price of the book. Save yourself the costly expense and time of making avoidable mistakes and learn from Dr. Dunning's vast knowledge. Read this book!

A true goldmine for professional, student, or instructor!

A fount of wisdom and research, this book is the finest of it's kind I have ever found. I reccomend it as essential reading to my students, and have personally found it a life preserver of honesty. Little guideance is given to artists at the beginning of their careers, in or out of school, and they often use myths and stereotypes to guide them. Without sentimentality this book cuts to the reality of what is essential and what is rubbish. The chapter on Artists and Teachers is a revelation of hard won insight about this eternally frustrating yet essential stage in an artist's development. It has made me a better teacher. Up to date on the art marketplace, this book is also a consice reading of fascinating research that has been done on the professional development of artists. While many books seem to offer either ameturish feel good ideas about developing "creativity", or dry business practices advice, Dunning has written a book for pursuing professional success, economically and artistically.
His efforts are an enormous gift to thoes who would pursue this most difficult of paths.

I wish I had read this book five years ago when I entered art school. Many lessons I learnt from the world of hard knocks are very intelligently and caringly explained in this book. I've had so many profound realizations at every page its amazing. This is not a "feel good" self help book, but a well written honest distillation of wisdom gather by an artist and teacher over several decade. If you want to nurish you creative soul BUY THIS BOOK!!

About the Author
Born in 1906 in London, Oscar Fishtein emigrated in 1908 with his family to New England. Growing up in Rhode Island, he was regularly bloodied by young anti-Semitic toughs, until he took up boxing, displaying such a flair for it that he went semi-pro.

Graduating from Brown University in 1927, he became a social worker in the Harlem district of New York City. At the age of 52, pursuing a lifelong dream, he became a man of letters. He earned a master's degree at Rutgers University, secured a teaching position in the English Department of Union Country College, and is professor emeritus.

In 1979, he founded the L.I.F.E. (Learning Is For Ever) Center, a program providing senior citizens with free college courses. He is also co-founder and president of the New Jersey Council on Senior Citizen Education, and retired senior fellow for education, research and development at Rutgers' Institute on Aging. He has received numerous awards for his service in connection with senior citizens' education.

From Foreword: The name Eichmann meant something to us. We had heard of him as one of the executors of the "final solution," but it did not then have quite the clang of terror history gave it. Nonetheless, when the committee selected me to meet with him, my heart leaped. Millions killed had one abstract fear meaning, but for me to meet the tiger face-to-face was paralyzing. My mind searched for a legitimate excuse to say "No" or "I'm not the one," but my tongue stuck to the roof of my mouth and I nodded.

It is full of inside gossip about life in the basement of the West Wing, where a man could find himself side by side with Henry Kissinger at the urinal and buy a very decent sandwich at the mess for $0.75. It is also a classic text in the art of political manoeuvre and a subtle miniature of the Nixon administration in the days before Watergate, when Donald Rumsfeld and Dick Cheney were liberals. About the Author
Stephen Hess , one of the foremost authorities on media and government in the United States, is a senior fellow emeritus in Governance Studies at the Brookings Institution. He first joined Brookings in 1972 and was distinguished research professor of media and public affairs at the George Washington University, USA (2004-09). Hess served on White House staff during the Eisenhower and Nixon presidencies and as adviser to Presidents Ford and Carter.

smart, insightful, poignant....a quick read that will make a lasting impression

superb...subversively provocative and a model for 'political/institutional/personality' and 'personal' historical analysis....
smoothly written and intriguingly researched, hess has done a masterful job of exploring a personal/professional
relationship between a 'professor' - representing the 'institutions' of academe and 'public intellectuals' and 'bureaucracies' -
and a 'president' - who grasped/grokked the institutional imperatives of the executive and legislative branches exceedingly well...

what we have here is a beautifully drawn 'miniature' of how savvy individuals influence and are influenced the institutional roles they choose to play BUT what makes this book 'special' is the way it explores/explains how 'the other' pat and dick effectively engaged with each other....he knew both protagonists well enough to give his descriptions an intimacy, authenticity and authority that makes the historical context feel fresh...

any and every 'serious' academic who aspires to serve in an executive branch/advisory role would be foolish not to read this book (that said, my knowledge of academe and academics allows me to confidently predict there will be no shortage of post-doctoral fools)....that said, i also predict this little book will be 'required reading' in the 'better' schools of public administration - yes, kennedy school, i'm talking to you...as well as ENA and Sciences Po and National University of Singapore...hess' ability to capture a controversial moment in time, a truly 'odd couple' relationship and the institutional contexts of personality and power makes for a delightfully substantive and substantively delightful read....enjoy

A Must Read

Stephen Hess tells a compelling story of how a moderately conservative Republican president brought a liberal Democratic Harvard professor into his cabinet. He gives the readers an intimate third person account on how his two principal subjects, Richard Milhous Nixon and Daniel Patrick Moynihan were brought together. Nixon, who on his second try had won a close election for president in 1968 picked Moynihan, who had previously served in the Kennedy and Johnson administrations for the newly created position of Assistant in Urban Affairs. This recounting of past events serves as another indication of the wide range of political opinion that the most American political figure (Nixon) in the second half of the twentieth century sought in the first two years of his presidency. Hess has done a very fine job of telling this story about both men he knew well. "The Professor and the President" is a must read for any serious student of the modern American presidency.

I learned a great deal in this book not only about the two ...

This is a marvelous book, written with wit and style, about one of the more unusual relationships a President has had with an adviser, in this case, Nixon and Moynihan. Hess captures the fascination that the President had with Moynihan, and likewise the wisdom and savvy of Moynihan of working with a President with whom he did not always agree. I learned a great deal in this book not only about the two men, but about the near miracle in welfare policy they pulled off -- a negative income tax, an idea that has both conservative and liberal fathers. Thought policy wonks may get the most of out of this book, I believe all citizens interested in the way our government, and especially the Presidency, works will find this book fascinating and wonderful to read. Believe it or not, it's hard to put down!

The idea of compiling the 500 biggest television shows is unique?but is it necessary? Bianculli, a New York Daily News writer and NPR TV reviewer, aims to present the most meaningful and popular events and shows from television history, but he concedes that the selections are subjective and hardly exhaustive. They do cover a wide spectrum of television history, however, and highlights or unique plot twists are mentioned. The selections include news events (the O.J. Simpson low-speed chase), mini-series (Rich Man, Poor Man), classic TV shows (The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis), sitcoms (Newhart), dramas (The Waltons), game shows (Jeopardy!), and even foreign television shows (Absolutely Fabulous). Bianculli offers lengthy commentary on each show or event, but one looks in vain for a straightforward cast list at the end of each selection (though cast members are sometimes mentioned). The launch of Nickelodeon's new cable channel, TV-Land, makes this a very timely book. Many of its subjects can be seen on either TV-Land or Nick at Nite, which this work frequently mentions. This book's subtitle defines its subject quite well, and the author, a TV critic for the New York Daily News, approaches his topic with passion, humor, and terrible puns.

Bianculli begins by noting that this is a companion volume to his 1992 book, Teleliteracy: Taking Television Seriously (Continuum). What is lacking in this new book, though, is a suitable definition of teleliteracy that would allow it to stand alone. The author uses the word a great deal, leaving the reader with the implication that the shows are those that have entered the American collective memory.

Arranged alphabetically, the subjects range from news (the coverage of the Kennedy assassination, the moon landing, the O.J. Simpson trial) to American television icons (MASH, Dallas, The Honeymooners) and British imports (Doctor Who, Fawlty Towers, Monty Python's Flying Circus). The author has chosen what he feels are "the most memorable" programs of postwar American TV. "Most memorable," he notes, does not necessarily mean good.

For the most part, the annotations note what channel or network originally carried the show and the years in which it originally ran. For British imports, he notes when they first ran in America. His sometimes humorous annotations present information on the show, and also his own choices of the best and the worst of the episodes. There is no consistent use of plot synopses, but complementary publications, such as The Complete Directory to Prime Time Network TV Shows (5th ed., Ballantine, 1992) or Total Television (3d ed., Penguin, 1991), have covered this. The author's opening remarks for his Star Trek entry ("Yeah, like America needs more words written about Star Trek" ) could be used for almost any entry.

Though it lacks a suitable method of cross-referencing, this book is wonderfully nostalgic reading. With its 1992 companion volume, it will provide any collection with an interesting examination of the cultural significance of TV in America.

A book that even tel-illiterates will want to read!

It's a shame this book has such a dull title because it's really
a wonderful book! I have several shelves filled with television
reference books, but this one takes pride of place. True to its
title, the book is organized in the form of a dictionary, with A
to Z entries on individual shows, from "ABC World News" to
"Zorro." Not only is it stuffed with useful information on the
history of television from 1945 through 1995, it's great fun to
read. David Bianculli is that rarest of all TV addicts--a man
with an IQ number higher than the number of cable channels he
gets. He seems to know everything there is to know about every
show ever aired and can comment authoritatively on all of them.
Here he has selected 500 programs (both series and individual
events, such as the O.J. Simpson "Bronco" miniseries) that have
had the greatest impact--for better or for worse--on our culture
and explains why. All this has to do with his conception of
"teleliteracy"--the awareness and appreciation of TV's most
popular and meaningful offerings.
In other words, this book isn't strictly about the best and worst
in television history (though Bianculli offers tons of examples
of both), it's about the shows that have made the greatest
impression on our consciousness--the shows that live on our
memories, that have changed our language, and have shaped our
culture.

A dog of a book; a huge disappointment

Perhaps I expected too much from this book. I had thought it would be a valuable reference for anyone who appreciates television and its history. Instead, the book is aimless drivel about nothing but the author's own opinions, not to mention his revolting and juvenile puns, appearing seeminly on every other line.

Mr. Bianculli is a fun read and clearly a master of his domain. This book is a must have for any television fan or student. Keep it by the TV set and beat your family members in triva contests. Run don't walk to pick up a copy.
